HOW TO: Install Kia Forte LED Tail Light

CJ, thanks for this video. I attempted to replace my brake light this weekend and I was perplexed by the Rube-Goldberg-esque construction of the light. Why Kia decided certain models didn't need an access panel in some of their cars is beyond me. I followed the steps you took in the video and saved I-don't-want-to-think-how-much-I-would-have-been-charged. Light bulb alone cost me $6. I definitely agree this is a two person job. At the time, I only had my 14-year-old daughter, who did her best but didn't quite have her heart into it. It sounds strange, but for anyone else who reads this: If you can wedge a small flat head screwdriver between the light and the body of the car where the light comes to a point on the side of the car, then wedge a larger flat head under the light where it turns into the door frame, then the light will come loose with a few tugs. Don't get me wrong, I definitely broke a sweat, but it came lose. The screwdrivers scratched the paint a little too, but nothing I'm going to be crying over. It took me 30 minutes to replace (that includes the time I took to watch your video) - heck, it took me longer to drive to the auto parts store to get the bulb. Thanks again. Cheers!

Thanks for this. I saw another video on a Kia sedan that showed the harness connector long enough to come through the tail light area grommet. When mine disconnected and turned out to be too short to extend through, I wasn't sure how to get to it. Your video helped a lot and I feel good about having been able to get the replacement installed on my own - and get the panel back on!

You guys are hilarious and absolutely correct about removing the old tail light - pain in the A$$. And this is the only video I found on KZbin with my same car to help me remove the light. You guys rock. Thanks for the tutorial.

In Canada, we got the LEDs with all turbo models. Funny seeing a turbo front fascia with those ugly halogens. Be careful about getting moisture in that area though because mine screwed up a solenoid and the third brake light would stay on all the time. Took them a month to get the part from Korea since this happened so new to the products lifecycle. Got it in 2014 and may be 3 months later it happened. Thankfully it hasn't happened since but yeah, just be careful about that. I'm thinking of changing out the halogen like the reverse and turn signal. Have you tackled this project?

Okay, so after fighting with this for over half an hour yesterday, I've got a pro tip. Get a pair of those polyurethane coated gloves at the hardware store. The thin ones that are slightly textures on the palm and fingers. These will give you the grip you need. Grab both sides of the housing then give it a firm tug straight back. Just enough to be authoritative, but without yanking the wire harness out. Should pop right off. It's still a MF-er to get to if you just need to replace the turn signal bulb, but this makes the job substantially easier.

These are specific for the Kia Forte Hatch Back, I believe the sedan has some LED OEM Tail lights. @@Thatdudecj So, I just did this (your video saved my sanity), and I actually disagree - I think you DO need to pull back the liner. I didn't replace the entire unit, just the brake light, and you have to get behind the light to disconnect it from the electrical system. The opening the wires run through is too tight to pull it all the way through, not without damaging the wires.
