Are you not supposed to dampen the hardibacker before applying thinset?

You can. I have never done that and have never had any problems with bonding. You can just mix your thinset a little wetter to compensate as the cement board absorbs water quickly.

@@HowtoHacks I'm currently remodeling a bathroom where I previously laid hardibacker and had to lift some. Was surprised how easy came up once unscrewed and how clean thinset came off plywood. So this time I damped to ply and hardibacker. Guess next owner will find out 😉
