Kristy, your access door at the back of the countertop is genius. I am a function-over-style kind of guy, so I have been shaking my head at those laundry countertop installations with the utilities stuck away where they are difficult to disconnect, particularly if an emergency occurs. Without a floor drain in the laundry room, turning off the water during down times is a good idea for people like us who have wood floors in adjacent rooms. Thank you for showing me the solution to satisfy function without corrupting style.

Yes! This is why I'm thinking of getting a front load washer. I want to put a counter on top to fold clothes. Now, I just have a laundry closet and we fold clothes everywhere. I want to keep the clothes in one place.

Awesome Idea. I wonder if I can use the same principal you use to build your countertop, to build a shelf big enough in my laundry room to fold clothes. My wife wants a table/shelf where she can fold, press and do other things while doing laundry. There will be nothing below this shelf to support it (NO LEGS), so I am wondering if placing cleats all around the three walls and just placing the board on top. I want it to be able to hold heavy stuff, including people when leaning on it. What do you think Ms. Kristy?
@angelinasoto69393 жыл бұрын
Ive watched dozens of videos and yours by far was the best one! The only difference is that my washer/dryer are not in a closet (I live in an apt. Building ) and would only be working with two sides of a wall. At least I have an idea of how to built the countertop. Thanks a million!

Did you secure the countertop to the cleats or is it just resting in place? If so what did you secure it with? Thanks!

Hi dont you have any problem with wet spots under the table or on the sides of the dryer? What about air circulation for the dryer
@MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! My washer/dryer doesn't seem to produce any moisture on the outside of the unit so no, I haven't had any issues with wet spots underneath the countertop. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by air circulation...our dryer's air vent attaches directly through/behind the drywall which circulates the air outside the house.

oh im inspired after seeing your vids, I just dont have any tools.

My only recommendation would be extending a support bracket out from the center of the rear cleat forward to the back edge of the main counter as there's a risk that the large counter with no rear/center support may bow in the middle over time.
@MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen5 жыл бұрын
Hi, J D! Thanks for the great tip!

So that center support bracket would extend past the rear counter and onto the main counter, correct?

What do you suggest if I have window on one side (dryer), allowing me only 1’6” of wall to work with and attach a cleat. The other (washer) side has 2’9” of wall including a slight overhang for the top.

Ok so I tried to start on this but had a bad experience and I'm hoping someone can help. I don't have many power tools so I had Lowe's cut the plywood for me. Every single piece is either cut wrong (I gave the right measurements but they didn't cut it right), cut with really bad jagged edges, or both wrong size and jagged. Does this mean I need to just buy a circular saw and cut it myself or do I need to be a more annoying customer at Lowe's and make sure it's right? Do I need a higher quality wood? Is plywood supposed to splinter like that?

Michelle and Aaron Mitchell try laying down some of that paper that comes on a roll. Butcher paper, maybe? You can make it as large as you need (you may have to tape on a 2nd piece). You can tape it to the straight wall and then bend and cut along the slanted wall. Then you’ll have a perfect template you can use for measuring.

Hey Leonard, the trap door in the back I made by cutting a portion along the back of the countertop using my circular saw, and then using a spade drill bit to create a finger pull to easily open and close. It just rests right on top of the cleats just like the countertop. Hope that makes sense.
@LeonidasD8286 жыл бұрын
Mama Wants to Build by Kristy Green Awesome, One more question i am going to use your materials list to make my counter but my room is around 67.5 inches instead of the 61 you have, how did home depot cut the wood for you? did you have to ask them before buying?
@MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen6 жыл бұрын
Hey Leonard, sorry for the delay - I hope everything worked out!! In a situation like this where I need someone to cut the wood for me, I just have the nice guys at HD carry the large sheet of plywood off the shelf and over to their saw. I give them measurements and then haul the cut pieces to the front to pay.

@kathleenlust6634 жыл бұрын
Haha, how about hinging the countertop so that the counter can flip over the dryer. So, it would be done the same way using the cleates, but cross cut the plywood between the two appliances then add a piano hinge.
@DoublePenetration05 жыл бұрын
Don't do this do gas powered dryers! They need to breathe air!
@kingofspades5315 жыл бұрын
DoublePenetration0 The only type of dryer that *might* apply to this is a ventless condenser dryer, but those usually vent out the front bottom. If the machine, whether gas or electric, is connected properly to the exhaust vent and is kept clean, and the dryer itself is working properly, there won’t be any heat or moisture to be trapped under a countertop. They don’t vent from behind or underneath.
