Why don't bikes come with captive spacers from factory?

What about the rear wheel cotter pin that goes on the axel bolt? That's kind of important!

11 months and no other comments? Well, I am back and have a question: At 4:21 in the video, you are torqueing the two nuts down. What tool is that? And can you set different torque specs using that tool?

A 3 inch piece of wood is the PERFECT height for under the rear tire. You can also put a floor jack under the bike (under rear shock mount that's metal) to tweak the bike height if needed but if your wood is 3 inches, then you shouldn't need to

Please share the torque specs, specifically the caliper bolts. Thanks again

Good point. Here you go: Caliper Bolts 25ft-lb Front Axle Clamp Bolts 15ft-lb Front Axle 94ft-lb Rear Axle Nut 94ft-lb (Source Kawasaki Service Manual) I appreciate the input!

Caliper bolts 25lbs? Seems kind of light. I have a gen5. I’m sure not much different. I torqued the heck out of mine. Did a track day, brakes felt weird going from 175ish to 30mph, they kind of wobbled, felt unbalanced at that velocity. I’m going to re-tighten and do sequence again. You failed to mention pushing down on forks after you install axel, before pinch bolts, and before tightening caliper bolts.

I agree with you that 25 seems really light but that's what Kawi recommends for the Gen4. I put them in closer to 40. The service manual for the Gen5 states 26ft lbs. All the more reason to safety wire. I didn't mention pushing down on the forks because I don't ever do that. Personally don't think it's necessary, not mentioned in the service manuals, techs at the dealership don't do it, etc. However, I am not saying it's wrong or that it will hurt anything, I just personally don't feel it's necessary.

I have taken the rear wheel off but I can't get the spacers back on properly, the right side fits in fine, the left side I am having issues with and I am uncertain how they sit, do you have, or could you do a video showing that?

@@XxcamXx-vw9vo yeah I can't remember what it was though I think I thought I was putting them on right but it was upside down or something was really simple anyway sorry that's no help just try it every way if it's the same issue as I was having it's simple

Get some captive spacers, makes things a lot easier

You make it look easy. And this is coming from a guy who took 4 hours to swap out my air filter!! Haha. Just a suggestion but, when making these videos, it may help starting out with a photo of your tools list to complete the job and a torque spec during the videos. This way, we can pause the screen and ensure we have all tools necessary to complete the job properly and torque as we follow along. Just a suggestion. Good video. If I can't get my bike in soon,I may have to tackle this. But, when the bike is at the shop, they don't revove all that transportation removal so stuff don't get lost, do they? I don't suspect they lube the wheels either. Just swap the tires?

That's a great idea! Tool set and torque specs in the vid. Thank you! Most decent shops will take care of the axle spacers. All shops would appreciate one less piece to worry about or lose.

Question: before you torque the front wheel, don't you have to remove the front from the stand and push down two or three times on the steering column to make sure the suspension and alignment are ok? I watched another video where it was mentioned that it was important to do so.
@speeddemon370
@speeddemon370 4 жыл бұрын
Nope. That's a KZbin myth that doesn't actually exist in the real world. If it was real your local shop would do it, and/or it would be mentioned in your service manual. Two super easy things to check to find out what's legit.

You know the service manual does say before tightening down the pinch bolts to take the bike off the stand and pump the forks 4-5 times to allow the right fork leg to settle in a natural, straight, position. This is crucial to avoid brake drag and pogo front end.
