Dale, thank you for the video. I have no distributor, I have a DIS system, but you can't remove the oil pump shaft, otherwise your pump will not work, so I will prime it but don't really have to worry about the position... it will be a good opportunity to inspect that pump shaft and see how it's been holding up on it's own.

Hey, I have a 95 wrangler 2.5L. I replaced the oil sending unit because I was having the oil pressure at 100 while running and acting erratically. Once changed it seems to be working , and when you cold start it I get around 40 psi. After it is warm it can drop to almost 0 at idle. While I drive it goes to around 30ish. Oil level is on safe and on the line for full as it should.

Thanks for the video! Answered several questions. My '87 YJ started making an engine noise but would stop after driving for 5 miles or so. I believe it is a faulty oil pump not getting oil throughout the engine properly. I have changed the pump and will be priming it later hopefully fixing the issue. Thanks for the detail in your video! You could use a "crows foot" for the hard to get bolt. As I understand for every inch of extension you used, add one foot pound of torque. And inch pounds to inch pounds per inch of extension.

Bad sealing connection between pick up tube & pump may be more an issue then we realize. SUCKING AIR?? Need to look into this more for low or erratic oil pressure. I had this issue, found oil pan sump pushed up from rock crawling. I think oil pickup actually got pushed up and affected the connection at the pump. Checked all the rod/crank bearings- (good). Pulled tube, was loose, put RTV on, slip fit but did not press it in. Now when back together I still have somewhat low and erratic oil pressure.

Glad you did this.... I have noticed that my oil pressure starts out @ 25 PSI when cold....but is only @ 12 PSI at idle and or low RPM's when cruising after the oil has been brought up to operating temperature... the PSI goes higher when the RPM's go higher after reaching operating temperature... Thinking my pump may be going.... What do you think, Dale....anyone? Piggy backing off George Hamberhill in the comments.....Why did you have to change it?
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd start with the easy stuff that wears out, like replacing the oil pump isn't a bad idea. You may do that and still have issues, but you got a new pump and eliminated a potential cause. These pumps do go out.. I'm using this new pump on my 4.0 rebuild
@LextechLighting
@LextechLighting 5 жыл бұрын
Oil pumps do not create pressure. Main bearings do. Pumps create CFM which is a completely different force. They either work or they do not. The CFM will not change regardless of the PSI in the bearings.
@doddgarger6806
@doddgarger6806 4 жыл бұрын
If you have your pan off, why not do rods and main bearings while replacing the pump? That's likely where your pressure is going Easy easy job.. I built a 4.6 and just rebuilt an old pump with a kit, lapped the housing on a piece of glass to the tight side of the spec and it has 60 cold 25 hot idle, that's with cam saver grooves cut in the lifter bores bleeding off some pressure as well..

Can another way of priming the oil pump just be removing the fuel pump relay and spinning the motor via the starter?

Follow up, I decided to try 15w-40. I removed it about 150 miles later, that oil was just way to thick. Then I started having oil pressure issues at idle. Went ahead and replaced the oil pump, good as new. 110k miles new to me Jeep.

My oil pressure is ok, but using this new pump on my engine rebuild
@GeorgeHamberhill
@GeorgeHamberhill 5 жыл бұрын
@@JeepSolid Oh yes that's right. Here's why I asked. Jeep is a 1997 with a 2.5L 5spd. My oil pressure is good until the engine is at operating temperature. Then the oil pressure drops so low at idle that the engine light comes on. This happens even after an oil change. I'm thinking that the bearings have a lot of wear on them but the engine only has 134,000 miles on it. So I was thinking maybe the oil pump has some problems.

I installed a new inline-6 I got from Powertrain but for some weird reason my oil pump is not priming oil out of the pushrods. The instructions say to leave the oil filter gapped 1/8 of an inch and when oil comes out to close the oil filter but once again it's building up too much pressure and my drill will not turn with the oil filter closed so no oil is coming up through my pushrods. Ideas?
