Hi SKY, I did the exact same test (out of curiosity) on my 2014 grand cherokee. Oddly my PSI readings (taken from my dash info as I didn't have a scan tool) were a little different. Cold start - 55 PSI Cold 3500 rpm - 78 PSI Full temp idle - 35 PSI Full temp 3500 rpm - 54 PSI I admit I was surprised (but happy) to see my idle pressure never went into the 20's like on your 2008. I wonder if the pressure info displayed on the dash would be the same readings you'd get from a scan tool? I also wonder if the oil pump on the grand cherokee would be a higher volume than the one on the car? I also use penzoil ultra platinum fully synthetic oil and am religious about my oil changes at 5000km. I have seen another video which shows the bearings used in the lifters were changed in 2014 and appear to be significantly bigger. Another video suggests that if mds is activated frequently, it actually helps that lifter get more lubrication when it's in the down position. If this is the case, my long highway trips may have helped. Wondering what your thoughts on that is?
@ReignitedAuto8 ай бұрын
@jonh2408 yes the 09+ engines have a slightly higher volume oil pump than the previous version, your PSI numbers are pretty consistent with what you'd see from a pump that's in good shape. 👍 And you're absolutely right, allowing the MDS to work as it should allows more oil flow to the lifters versus turning the system off. I'll have a more in depth video discussing all the details of the MDS system and its oiling properties out in the next two weeks!

I’m afraid to say this out loud…🤞🏻 I have a 2013 ram 1500 HIMI. I just hit 200,000 miles. I have not had a single problem out of this truck, no tick ever! The only thing I’ve done is ,change the oil every 5000 miles, rotate the tires, replace tires, replace brake’s , coolant flush 3 times I think, transmission flush twice. This has been the best running vehicle I have ever owned by far! Everything is bone stock. Maybe I’m just lucky, I don’t know. But the engine still runs like new, so does the transmission. if low oil pressure at idle is the problem, then this will cure it. I have a question about oil pressure sending units. The part number I was expecting is 5149062AA, people keep sending me 5149062AB. The Chrysler TSB says to use 5149062AA... What is the difference between the two part numbers?

Just saw this @ recommendation of Ram Forum members. Outstanding work, thank you. I wasn't aware Ram upgraded the oil pump post-2009 model year, this obviously means they knew they had an insufficient oiling problem and lifter / cam failures. 20 psi idle oil pressure is marginal for any engine (GM's 8.1L V8 was notorious for this also), but often fatal for Hemi valve architecture. If the EVIC is to be believed, my 2017 Hemi shows 35 psi oil pressure @ hot idle, which is good for a non-Hemi engine. But we've seen lifter and cam failures in post-2009 Hemi engines also, which means it's still not sufficient for the inadequate oiling of the lifters and camshaft. in fact, raising the cam to fit the VVT cam phaser made it worse, with a lesser oil drainback angle. An oil pump change is too big a job for me at my age, but thanks anyway.

Awesome Video! Great hands-on with actual historical data and test confirmation. If your doing a rebuild on a Gen III, throwing in an upgraded oil pump and new lifters makes sense. I just got my 5.7 done. Replaced lifters, cam, rockers and pushrods. Timing chain as well just because. I suggested to the shop to install a hellcat pump and he advised against it because the 5.7 isn't designed for it like the 6.4. I have a 2015 2500. I looked at the parts and there was nothing wrong with the lifter bearings but cam was scarred up on almost all of them but one worse then others. My oil pressure is at 55 psi cold and 45 at operating temperature. It seems to me that it was cam failure or oil failure that failed the cam. How about installing a high idle switch for longer idle times. Mechanic says the hellcat pump will blow out seals but you say that the engine has a venting system to prevent that. Anyway, I didn't get one installed but from now on I will go with 5w30 and Lucas and see where that takes me . Thanks for all your amazing videos. Been doing lots of research.

Very informative test. You can apply this to LS and Coyote engines also. I'm going to use a high volume pump on my LS3 stroker project when I start that, even though some argue you will use more HP to turn a high volume pump. I'd rather loose a couple of HP for more oil flow at idle any day. I did a high volume Melling on a '01 Jeep 4.0 inline 6 that had a scored up oil pump gear face and pump cover. Went from about 30-35 psi cold in 30* weather to about 70 psi cold in 30-90* weather. No more clacking of valve train at idle. BTW, the rotors on that pump were almost twice as long as the stock pump. Like a new engine, very happy.

Ive been reading many of the comments, and the point is getting lost. He's not talking about PRESSURE as much as he is FLOW or VOLUME, even though he mentions pressure. By upgrading to a high volume pump, there will be an increase in pressure at an idle, but at highway speed, the pressure will level off because of the the pressure by-pass spring/valve in the pump. Simply put, pressure is the resistance to flow. The pressure is being created by all the little passages and thousandths of an inch clearance of the rod and main bearing and all that other tight stuff. That doesnt mean that theyre getting more oil across and through them. Its not the pressure that is keeping the needle bearings in the lifters lubricated, it the amount, the volume of oil they're getting at idle. As a former firefighter i get what he means. Let's say the hoses are the oil pumps If you take a 1 3/4" hand line, you can put 100 psi on that line but only flow 90 gals/minute of water That pressure is blowing shit everywhere but there's not enought water to cool the fire to make it go out. But you take a 2 1/2" line, you can have 100 psi on that line but you have a volume of 350 gals/ minute. You just put enough water on the fire to cool it down so much that the fire doesnt have the heat to sustain combustion, so the fire goes out. I dont know the volumes of these oil pumps so these numbers are for illustration purposes only; Stock pump flows 8 oz of oil per minute at idle to the lifters Melling pump flows 18 oz per minute to the lifter The Hellcat pump delivers 50 oz of oil to the lifters. So the Hellcat pump is delivering PLENTY of oil to the lifter needle bearings to keep them lubricated, more lubrication, less friction. Less friction, less wear. Less wear, longer before the part wears out Thats the point, it's not the pressure of the pump, it's the volume of the pumps

On the trucks, if you want to keep the A/C compressor attached, what I did was take a piece of wood or a broom/shovel/etc. and place it across the hood and then zip-tie the compressor to it so it "hangs" but it is still suspended and not pulling on the hoses. It looks sketchy, but it works and you don't have to yank the A/C lines like you said. I tried the OEM tools puller that you can rent from autozone, and I couldn't get enough grip on the balancer with it in order to pull it off. In the end, I used a 3 jaw puller which grabbed wrenches I arranged through the three "spokes" of the balancer. It's hard to explain, and it is ultra sketchy, but it was the only way I could get the balancer off. Sky if you see this, perhaps you could link in which puller you used (Amazon affiliate link?).

Hey first of all sorry for my bad english, i have an Dodge Ram 1500 from 2014 with the 5.7 hemi. I have seen the video and read some comments and also do my search on Google. So my Dodge has an idle Oil pressure round about 33-37psi but i have nothing changed, because i rode some comments that they have 20psi. So now my question is this "high" Oil pressure in ilde (enginge was operation temperature) normal or is there something done befor i got the car. Thank you for your hard work in the video. Hopefully somebody can answer my Question. Greetings from Germany and sorry for my english i hope you guys can understand it :)

I would say the oil pressure readings you are seeing are consistent with what I see from factory oil pumps in your vehicle so I doubt anything has been changed. My advice fit the improved oil volume generally applies to people who idle their vehicles for excessive amounts of time. 👍

Thank you for all the time, effort & expense in performing this testing with the different OE and Melling oil pumps; Impressive video! On my 2021 Challenger SP/WB with the 392/6.4L SRT engine: I change oil & oil filter every 6 months or 6,000 miles (whichever occurs first) and use the Mfg. specified SRT products (oil & oil filter) that I purchase at Parts at my local Dodge (CDJR) Dealership. I purchased my '21 Challenger new during June 2021, and right now (10/10/2022) have only 5,500 miles on it. I've still changed the oil & oil filter every 6 months. Vehicle is always garaged and driven (at a minimum) once every few days to at least once per week. I've not had any issues but do intend to take a look at oil pressure when both cold and when up to temperature, just to know. The upgrade to the Hellcat oil pump is interesting. Thanks! Tom M., So. Cal.

What an effort!!! Kudos to you for this episode. As always so much information. You really do put in the work for your viewers. Maybe a dumb question, do you know if the AWD version can swap out the pump the same way. Is the oil pick up tube mounted the same or is like the trucks that have to remove entire oil pan. Contemplating engine in or out valve seat replacement /cam / lifters / chain / oil pump and maybe shortie headers. Any opinions? Keep up the good work!

Always plan on having to drop the oil pan. It's a bitch and a half. I got a 4x4 ram and only had to unbolt the front diff. It was quite a bitch. 147 miles 3 bad lifters and a very sad looking cam. High idle times but regular oil changes. Looked like I was wiping anti seize out the bottom of the oil pan. Ridiculous amount of tiny metal shavings. Replaced literally everything and I would feel so not good about not knowing what was in the oil pan If I hadn't removed it.

One thing that I will add is that for everyone with a 2009 and later HEMI engine and you want your MDS, It will not work. I installed a hellcat oil pump in my 2014 5.7, and it was throwing a CEL because the oil pressure was out of range. so although, yes I got higher oil pressure, I still wanted to have my MDS.

U can use 5w30 oil in a hemi. They use it in other countries and it even says in the manual that U can use that if 20 weight is not available or high towing usage is done with the engine. 5w30 or 0w30 is so very marginally thicker at 200 degrees it’s hardly notable on paperwork even amsoil will agree the difference is very minimal. Especially at start up when your 0winter flow is exactly the same

I'm not sure if Ram had ever installed higher flow pumps for certain model years but I own a 2016 5.7 bighorn stock and the idle psi has always stayed around 42 at full running temp. I also live in Texas which the outside temp stays around 100 F during the summer. I recently just hit 200,000 miles with no major issues except when I replaced warped exhaust headers with aftermarkets around 130,000 miles. All maintenance done such as oil changes every 5,000, transmission flush, tune-ups, radiator flush and full suspension replacement at 170,000. It has been a great truck and I plan on putting another 100,000 miles on it! I would much rather get an engine replacement instead of buying a new or slightly used truck with today's prices! I just can't comprehend paying $50k to $60k for entry level model!

Oil PSI at idle for a HEMI should be 15-25psi!!!! You should gain exactly ZERO oil pressure increase with a HV pump if each pump (standard and HV) have the same pressure relief spring. You DO NOT want higher oil pressure at idle. Regardless! Your idle oil pressure is perfect and raising the oil pressure is not needed or wanted. You swapped to a high pressure, high volume oil pump.

So on my 2012 hemi in a ram 1500 4x4, i only hear a tic for a few seconds on startup. Im experiencing like a hesitation in the engine. Rpm, load, speed, its there all the time, nothing changes it. It hasn't thrown any codes in the dash whats so ever. So my question is could this be a lifter issue ?? If so would the cylinder delete selinoid plates and retune be enough to get me by without dropping $5000 on lifters and a cam ??
@calebjackson470810 ай бұрын
Chevy has the same tick issue. Delete mds switch lifters and cam for non mds. Tune it. Low amounts of oil changes, high idle times, junk oil pumps, cheap parts. The list goes on and on. Engine is trying to do too much. Many of these vehicles have two stage oil pumps. Low pressure comes on then jumps to high pressure. Cylinders turning off to save fuel. Just too much. Make it do what it does best. Just run.
