@spencercolgan7 ай бұрын
OK, my friend! Now you are in advanced Peel and stick wallpaper procedures… Go to your local store and get a clear, strippable, heavy duty, Wallpaper paste. And then, with the help of another person, using a table, clamping down the peel and stick product - after you get the backing off of the top part, clamp down the peel and stick, and then with a paint roller, with a small amount of paste on the roller, Begin rolling your paste pulling it in one direction on the peel and stick… It is essential that you do not use lots of glue… A thin layer will suffice… Then get yourself a transparent plastic paint edger Harbor Freight, make sure it has no scratches on it that will scratch your peel and stick, And, going in one direction, starting at least 15 inches from the top, with two hands, putting gentle pressure on the peel and stick product, push against the wall and pull straight down, feathering out the paste underneath, but, only after you have sprayed a layer of water on the product before you pull the paint edger against the peel and stick… This will avoid scratch the product You will then learn your success and failure as you pull your… You will learn if you used too much paste because it will be oozing out of the bottom and the edge of your peeling stick, you will know if you have scratches on your paint edger because it will scratch your peel and stick if you were not careful; but you will have great success if you do it well another thing, straight down and do this the left side of the peel and stick, the middle, and the right making sure that you begin this process in the middle column and then on either side, and you will have a perfectly installed product

Besides paint, I’m using vinyl wallpaper, peel and stick, for the sides and back of the shelving system. The wood is some sort particle board. What should I use to seal it, and protect it from the Florida sun and rain? Will sealers adhere to the vinyl? Should I use a water based polyurethane first over the paint to seal the wood, and then apply the vinyl wallpaper? Will the wallpaper stick to the sealer? I also would rather have a matte finish, but don’t even know if any of this is possible. This is my first project.....so I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Nothing against Spencer, but this video was made five years ago and I do believe that in my extensive research for wall murals both peel and stick and must use wallpaper paste types of murals that things have come a long way. Like anything really you get what you pay for, so going on Amazon and finding the least expensive scene, or mural that you think you could live with is NOT the way to go unless you want to be disappointed or worse are not able to get it on the wall and have it look good and more importantly STAY on the wall! I used to do wallpapering years ago, with the traditional rolls that had to be pasted and also the walls had to be prepared well to get a good result. I always had a plumb ball with me as there is not such thing as perfectly plumb walls or perfect corners. Nowadays people use the laser tools to establish level and plumb so you know where to hang the first piece. I have looked at a large number of places online that sell wall murals and wallpaper, some are peel and stick or you have the option to choose to get the type that you use paste with. The backing that is on peel and stick that is the easiest to deal with is not this celephane type stuff he is using that gets all full of static. Good sellers have much better backing that is not a problem to work with and it is in the instructions to pull the backing down about 12" and then fold and score it out of the way. then once you have the top of the panel or roll in the right spot and have smoothed it down being sure to get all the air bubbles out, you can just reach around both sides at once (without a helper) or each of you pull the back down in approximately 12" at a time repeating the smoothing and so on. I was getting a rash watching how painfully and tedious this was!!! I would NOT by a product like he is using and I am assuming because of the age of this post that stuff like this is not made anymore for obvious reasons. One company that has a good reputation with a lot of DIY people on U tube and even designers is Wallism. they have a great selection of murals in all kinds of sizes and I think they will also custom size if that is what you want and need. They seem to back their product and offer lots of information about installation from preparing the surfaces to be covered, to keeping your delivery of product in the home or room for several days before installing similar to what you do with laminate flooring. Also, if you live in a home that is older or doesn't have the best craftsmenship you might as well plan on "framing" your mural because where your walls meet the ceiling or the corners are not going to be perfect. If you use a square you can find out if your corners are ok, you can use a level along the top where the wall meets the ceiling to see if the joinery is level, you can use an old fashioned plum line or go out and get a laser tool. You should watch as many tutorials as possible and get all the instructions you can from the business you bought from and do the prep work as boring as that may be, or else you will be at wits end and maybe even very disappointed, and worse maybe tear it all down your so upset! DIY is good but one MUST do the research and I say start off with something small before you go for a big job. I am 71 , I bought a lovely mural from Wallism and it is big, 15,5 feet wide and 9 ft in length. The back was great, the material of the mural itself was strong and because I did all the work first to determine plumb, level and surface quality, I hung it all by myself no helper and I did half one day, and the other half the next day and lived to tell about it and it is simply gorgeous and worth the $500.00 plus I paid for it on sale and the tools etc needed to do the work right and safely, safely I am referring to a new and very robust step ladder. Good luck , just remember that you get what you pay for and to DIY you need to know what your getting into.

Thank-you for posting this Spencer. Question did you trim around the edges to remove the overhang at the Moldings?

Another question.. I live in CA, hot dry summer but wet winters. I want to put wallpaper (unpasted) in my small travel trailer. Concerned moisture may affect long term adhesion, and concerned for any possible mold growth if I don’t use right adhesive. The trailer walls are plywood with a vinyl overlay which cannot be removed? What adhesive would you recommend ?
@spencercolgan3 жыл бұрын
Roman 880 with a paint store-purchased-mold-inhibitor (liquid) added to the paste.

Thank you... You think the in can biocide may not be enough? I’ll look into it. How about primer... over existing vinyl... Roman pro 935 or Zinsser shieldz?

I've read that it's best to buy a quality, thick wallpaper to make it easier to install. How is thickness determined? Is it a weight measurement or an actual width measurement? Is this something a vendor would readily include in the product description (the thickness or weight of the paper)? Also, what is considered to be quality, thick wallpaper whether by thickness or weight?

Thank you. Can you please tell me, is there any reason you can’t trim the edges off to reveal the covered moulding features? TY.

I don’t understand your request… Please explain your question.

@@spencercolgan Thanks, in the video it appears the paper is hung over the inside edge of the panel moulding or the stile edge. Which would make it easier to trim the paper to an exact inside fit. Or did you cut the paper to the exact inside width before hanging? Thank you for taking my question.
@spencercolgan3 жыл бұрын
@@robertcasey7312 You are exactly correct… I hung it over and beyond what I needed in order to push it into the corner and cut it, go on any one of my videos and watch it at least 15 minutes and you will see me cut Wallpaper

Will steam from hot water filling the room cause this type of wallpaper to peel off?
@rogerbraun6344 жыл бұрын
I used a chunk of the backing paper and a putty knife. Went over the entire mural with a 12 inch square of backing burnushing the entire strip specially around the edges. No marks, backing protects completely. I had a few timy tony bubbles. Poke with a pin and burnish. Bubbles gone. Looks great.

Great video! Thank you! I'm so glad I watched it before my peel & stick application on Thursday. I'm planning on using it on wood paneling that is painted. Do you think it will stay in place or fall off the wall? I guess I could fill all of the wood gaps, but I'd rather not destroy the integrity of our mid-century modern home.
@spencercolgan4 жыл бұрын
Kris... you need to prepare that would be for you put this type of wallpaper on it, unfortunately. Here’s want to do; prime your panelling first with BIN. Unfortunately, it get more involved; skim coat into those grooves to fill them in. Then use wallpaper paste, Roman 880 and apply it to your wall covering yes, use paste. Thanks miss Zara.

I skim coated my wall but what do I prime it with? Just regular paint primer? And do I really need to prime it since the wallpaper will be stuck over it?

Prime with shieldz clear.

Hi Spencer, your explanation is very detailed and precise. Greatly appreciated. I am about to do a project for my mom's house, except that it is tiled. How would you propose that work with to ensure that the grouting lines between every tile does not have that line of air bubble gap?
@spencercolgan4 жыл бұрын
You cannot proceed without making that surface flat. You can apply an even smooth layer of compound in a Skimcoat fashion then hang peel and stick after primer

@spencercolgan3 жыл бұрын
Great question! No. You have to wait for the paint to fully cure. Peel n sticks say 3 weeks!!!!
@marienigro27602 жыл бұрын
What does it need to be primed with? Can I use just regular semi gloss paint ?
@spencercolgan2 жыл бұрын
No Marie. Semigloss would actually be the quickest way to make peel n stick come down. Immediately. Your wall must be “cured.” If it is painted, the paint must be cured meaning, that all of the gases have evaporated from the dried paint. If it is a raw, brand new sheet rock, you could apply peel and stick wallpaper but you would have to seal the sheet rock. In this case, The surface must be smooth and sealed with a “sealant,” not necessarily, “a primer. “ Shields clear is EXCELLENT for this.
