I have never installed a pocket door,but I can see so many uses for the router plane. Have seen them before,but never in use. During my first year (last year) installing custom cabinets that we also build which are 90% painted. I have a huge tip for touching up any paint,you can buy color matched caulk from a paint store . Perfectly matched in color and sheen for $20 per tube. This can save yourself time and money. Recently I had to install an 8ftx12 inch oak stained floating shelf ,into an double angled corner. Shelf was built 1 inch longer,with 2# 45° cuts. Unfortunately 1 side was 44°,and the other was 47 resulting in it being 1/8 short in the front after scribing it in. I cut a piece of drywall paper with wall paint on it,and had my paint store match it. Obviously its not a super high end job,but a color matched board stretcher was super nice to have. Thanks Spencer for another technique to add to my mental toolbox!
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
That's handy. I have one of those caulk tube mixers that lets you mix paint in with your clear caulk. That works well for matching also.

Found out this design flaw several different times, but they were so spaced out I never caught on to what was happening. Always gouged out a hole with a chisel thinking there was something wrong with the hardware and I’d never have to deal with it again. It’s incredible the precut notches in doors for this hardware don’t have a hole drilled in
@MichaelWilliams-in3iz4 жыл бұрын
Kwicset makes a very nice one for pocket doors that allows you to use a prebored door Check those out they look and work a lot better than those square ones. Never seen a router plane before. I will order one, thanks. Love the videos, keep up the awesome work

I love the use of the router plane, looks like that pocket door strike jamb was made of MDF. Curious to see how it works with hardwoods. Does anybody have any vids of installing the 300$ Emtec privacy pocket door hardware? Luckily, some door companies will do this for you, for about 250$. I chose this option when installing 7' tall by 1 3/4" thick 1,000$ White Oak doors. They have the jigs and the shop, any mistakes is on them. Spencer, not crazy about using throw latch as a denting tool. Some of that hardware is very poorly made with cheap, soft metal. You could achieve the same marks with a fine point lead pencil. Keep up the good work, love your channel!

Very good advise to installing that type of pull. I am surprised that the builder doesn't spec a mortised type for what appears to be a higher end house. That notch type is my least favorite pocket door pull.
@MichaelWilliams-in3iz4 жыл бұрын
Kwicset makes a nice pocket door latch that works with prebored doors. They work really well. That’s the only one I’ll use. Those square ones are just cheap.
@muddywater68564 жыл бұрын
Ever have to add a slight countersink into the door behind the screws?? I know, even less material for the screw to grab...but the punched/pressed countersink in the side plates won't let them pull tight to the door....a pine door may pull up, but a hardboard skinned door won't. Some brand latches have this problem, and some don't.
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
On the strike plate yes, But no, I haven't ever done it on the door screws.

I find that to get some of those locks side plates to sit flat you need to countersink the hole because it's punched Looks like you have the Sclage style i like that has a little flange so you dont have to do that .

They got hardware that goes in round holes too so you can use the same jig for all the doors
@patriciamcgowan66382 жыл бұрын
The importance of using the utility knife to score around the strike plate 1/8 depth should be explained. When you use the router to plane the wood, it prevents splintering of the wood around the parameters of the cutout.

@@InsiderCarpentry Yeah the square ones were pretty common here for a while. But the circular one I linked is great.
