This is the step by step guide of what it takes to install JRZ RS Pro's on a 2009 Audi R8. We removed the original magnetic ride because the shocks were leaking badly and the JRZ's are cheaper and more reliable than stock OEM parts. We also painted the calipers is pearl red, changed the oil, and aligned the R8 before my trip home. This process was crazy fun to film, hope you enjoy the video! -L

I much prefer studs and lug nuts to lug bolts, it makes it much easier to line the wheel up when putting it back on. Most European production cars use bolts, as confirmed by comments above and your own statement, but almost all racing cars are adapted to stud and nut for their convenience when changing wheels.
@Xfacehack
@Xfacehack 6 жыл бұрын
NatoriousGamePlay I say that how strong either option are depends mostly on how thick the steel is. And what kind of steel is used. I know i heard cheaper many times. But if they cheaper they can spend the money they save on thicker bolts?

Serena Hansen Since i have not worked on cars with lugs, simply don't see the problem. Line up the wheel and put an bolt in? How hard can it be? I have removed and installed my rear wheels on and off like four times this month. Not lift...

I work on R8's. There is nothing simple about an oil change. It is not a 4 cylinder A4. Glad you went into the details about checking the oil level and how to correctly check it. All were spot on. Would like to add that the drain plug at the rear of the engine near the cross member is a difficult one to get out without the special 8mm triple square tool that Audi offers. Really like your ride. Tastefully done.

mynameisray "Better car" is entirely subjective. No one car is better at everything, it's all about what the person wants to experience. For some, an 800hp car that is only useful for highway pulls is better to some, and would generally get more internet cred, but some would much prefer to drive a car with 200hp that is more dynamic and handles the way they want it to. Larry fell in love with the Audi R8 ten years ago, and spent time waiting for the car that was perfect FOR HIM to come up for him to purchase. He worked hard towards his dream, which is probably a whole lot more than you will ever do.
@SerenaBluee

A Civic is much cheaper (to buy, insure, tax, and repair/replace parts), more economical and more practical than a GTR. They are both "better" than the other for what they were designed for. Performance should not always only be considered in its quantity. Would you care to list some examples of cars that are "better" than an Audi R8 for the price paid for this one? Admittedly, an R8 would not be my choice if I had the money, but I likely have a very different set of needs from a car than you or Larry do.

Every time I hear, I am amazed by the fact that you worked and dreamed 10 years to have an Audi R8. It is well deserved Larry! : ) On the other side, I found it very interesting from the comments, that from the states you are eager to have European cars (BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, sometimes an Alfa Romeo) while it is perceived as average here. We rather hunger for Mustangs and Challengers. :D. I guess people wants more rare cars against the "environment" they living. Greetings from 400 miles from München ; )

The Audi Bolt is pretty simple actually.. If you ever over torque a stud or have a stud failure, you most likely have to replace the hub or punch out the stud risking damage to the hub.. With a Bolt you don't really have those issues.

@mrjim7369
@mrjim7369 6 жыл бұрын
This isn't really accurate, I've worked as a mechanic for many years and the failure you tend to get more often than not is that the bolt rips the threads out of the hub giving you little choice but to replace the entire hub. With studs and nuts you can just replace the stud on the vast majority of cars I have worked on with no damage to the hub. Why the german marques use bolts instead of nuts is anyones guess :)

If you use Spacers or Change between aftermarket Aluminium Wheels and Steel Rims often (Most Germans do this at least twice a year. as we have to use Winter Wheels) you just need different bolts, not longer Studs.
@TorgeirFredriksen
@TorgeirFredriksen 6 жыл бұрын
Correct, this is the main reason european cars use bolts. Summer/winter rims often use different bolts (different length/cone angle).

How much did the JRZ suspension cost compare to replacing the broken magnetic strut. Does JRZ or someone sell the customized kit to install the into the car? Did you consider Penske remote reservoir or Moton shocks? I understand that the Penske shock can be adjusted to be softer for street use. I have 40 years of track experience and 5 double herniated discs in my lumbar area of my back that had to be fused... all from driving my track cars on the street. Did you corner weight your suspension? Is your car a V-10 or V-8 R8? I know that on Lambo V-10's that the oil filters are buried under the intake manifold... Which has to be removed to get access and you need a specialty wrench to remove the oil filter. Its a real PITA. Your filter location in this video appears to be the Audi 4.2 V-8. Thanks for your feedback.

I love these in-depth upgrade/build videos! I know MRC maintenance/tuning is expensive, but have you heard of DSC? They make suspension ECUs that replace the OEM units - they allow you to adjust the suspension settings electronically and can read data from various sensors (wheel position, speed, steering angle, etc...) and actively adjust the shocks within set parameters. I haven't gotten one for my MRC car yet, because it's expensive and I don't know if I can adjust the settings to be better than OEM (most likely not, at least not in a short period of time), but it would be cool if you can make a video of someone's car being upgraded by them (since yours are all upgraded already). It's probably the future of suspension tuning, more and more cars come equipped with MRC from factory and it just makes sense to tune those shocks instead of getting new ones (up to a point, no getting around better materials and piston valve design).
@Sebastian-lh6bn
@Sebastian-lh6bn 6 жыл бұрын
Tricking the control unit into thinking everything is alright is never the best idea, since the parameters read from your mini-fooling-device might be a dependency for other control units, e.g. for the steering control unit. So here's what would be the manufacturers approach: The magnetic ride suspension is an option for the R8, it was not mandatory. So there are R8s on the streets without warning-lights for missing MR-suspension, right? And that's what you can 'program' into the R8's ECU. You have to tell the car, that is does not have MR-suspension and the result is, that the corresponding control unit is ignored after that. Basically that's what you did anyway, you 'downgraded' to a simpler suspension. Looks great, however. Awesome setup and the brakes look just absolutely brilliant. If you want further information on that programming-topic, just have a chat with your audi-reseller. They normally do that work for inexpensively.

Omg that oil pan. How do you own an R8 and don’t care enough about it to either A: Do the job properly or B: Take it to someone who will? Honestly I’ve stripped some bolt holes before but I don’t see why you wouldn’t just bring that car to a dealer or something to have the oil change done properly. I mean you had 3 screws to tighten after that job guy. How do you strip 66.6% of the bolts you have to put back on that car?

As a mechanic I find great satisfaction in people doing a professional job to there cars and having some one actually appreciate and understand those said professionals working on the cars. The whole "Grease monkey" mentality bugs me as cars and trucks (I'm a diesel tech) are getting more and more complicated and people take maintenance and services to the object that city's and towns are built around for granted and the people who manufacture, maintains and modify them.

Larry another tip.. when starting your R8 V8 as its gonna be similar to M3 V8, let the car idle for about 2 mins... then when setting off drive smoothly and keep revs lets say below 4k and then once engine temp gets up to temp, you will know by the needle should be half way then you can begin to drive hard.... your V8 has to get oil lubrication in all parts of the engine first, by being at right temp the oil will be at the right consistency for that to happen... trust me i own a M3 V8 e93 hard top cabriolet and its a beast when i press the M button... total animal...

My personal perspective on the canister delete kits to prevent warning lights is that the best way to have done this would be to code it out using VCDS. The car looks awesome regardless, I am so envious of this and the Porsche :)

Reading from the comments the lug bolts are common in Europe but here in the states Volkswagen (Audi's owner) uses lug bolts too, I've been told lug bolts are more safer than lug nuts.

That install is absolutely incredible. That should be the standard install for that set up in that car.

didn’t know lug bolts were all that uncommon, my 2004 bmw 325i uses them and the only difference is it’s slightly more of a bitch to fit my wheels back on

For the Fill/Do not fill I think the logic comes not from oil changes but when checking it periodically. If you are checking your oil and you are passed the Do not fill line you have enough oil and leave it alone.

Why didn't you just use VCDS or a dealer diagnostic tool to tell the car it didn't have magnetic ride control? That would have extinguished the warning light.

My Volvo stationwagon had those lug bolts 😂 😂 😂 supposed to withstand a lot more than regular lugs which I just find funny on a stationwagon.

Volvo uses those lug bolts as well, I have one of those wheel hangers. The wheel hangers are nice when taking wheels off, but make it MUCH easier putting them back on.

So how will you know when your suspension is failing since you have no more errors coming up on the dashboard? You just check it visually regularly?

It’s not just Audi. All European cars use lug bolts instead of lug nuts. There are conversions to studs if you want ease for track swapping.

Mercedes does the same thing with the lug bolts I have to screw in that piece too for my E55 so i dont chip my 8 piston calipers with my rim falling off and Mercedes and Audi have the same bolt pattern

In Eurpe almost every car manufacturer use lug bolts. And when we change the tyres never use that weird guide pins. Pretty interesting...

Those clamps won't hold the canisters under high G forces. You need to rethink a long term solution fast because you could seriously damage your car.
