These days if you mention R8, people will almost certainly think of the Audi supercar. But that was named for another, earlier car. The one which went to Le Mans, and showed that Audi were a force to be reckoned with.
I'm finishing my mini series on Audi race cars with an in-depth look at a real, Le Mans campaigned race car. It's pretty cool, and we take the covers off!

Thank you, and Audi UK, very much for making this video (and the others) happen! To a racing enthusiast like me it is pure heaven to see a racing car as successful as this one in such detail. ps: Toyota found out things go wrong at Le Mans in pretty much every single year they tried; their history of losing Le Mans with the fastest car is nothing short of astonishing.

It's not just "told" that Audi changed the entire rear of the car in 3 minutes - there's video proof of them doing it here on KZbin. It wasn't just the transaxle (transmission +differential combined)... It was the suspension mounting points and basically the entire rear of the car, minus the engine. I think it was a complete rear subframe.

bustin 3 minutes for a transaxle? pfff....amazing!! the cockpit-front section piece of carbon seems super thick and solid. the rear of the car reflect fully how bright engineers and designers really are.the modularity of this car gives a clear advantage for such long distance races where anything can happen in a blink eye,then you have to be able to react in such manner too. this R8 is legend.

Awesome job. Your enthusiasm is great to see. I was there at Sebring in 2000 when the R8 won on its debut. At that time no one knew that we had witnessed the coronation of what would be the most significant prototype of the decade and would establish itself alongside the Porsche 962 as an all time great. All through the 2000's I was at every Sebring 12hour and petit Lemans. Every time the main question was, "Will anyone challenge the Audis". And generally speaking, at those two events, no one ever could.

There is something about these cars that just tickles a special part of my brain. It's the shire simplistic nature of the goal of being the fastest combined with the hugely complex task of getting there. There is pragmatism combined with huge human and mechanical effort. It's beauty for the needs sake not for the beauty sake. Simple yet complex. Brute force and elegance in one. Power and balance in an incredible harmony just for the simple task of arriving faster or going further than the competition. No BS, no show just GO! And that's beautiful.

Great video, I’ve only seen it run in anger once in 2005 and it’s a properly special thing to see driven on the limit. The extra crash structure for the rollover protection was supposedly added after Michaele Alboretto was killed in a testing accident at the Lausitzring when the car rolled at high speed.

Quick exchangeable modular component parts costs money. If you look at desktop PC vs. an enterprise server. The server has redundancy in mind with hot-swappable hard drives, fans & power supplies. So in case a component breaks there’s fall over backup that won’t completely shutdown the computer. You could replace the broken hard drive, fan or power supply and the server without shutting down the computer. Sort of like endurance racing in Le Mans. Your domestic car or PC doesn’t really need quick service repairability. Since your domestic car isn’t racing and your PC doesn’t need 24/7 uptime availability. So all those modular components isn’t necessary and will just drive up costs. Domestic cars are also engineered and optimized for quick factory production line assembly.

@@Massegainer I think there is a Renault where one has to remove the wheel and inner fender to get at the light bulb. David Brabham said he was blown away when trying the R8. The Panoz was a great car - and still managed to win (some) races against the Audis - but he very quickly noticed how much of a difference having 3x the budget makes, as it was piss easy to get ridiculously competitive laptimes with it.
@jstoli996c4s

That Panoz had to be absolutely manhandled to go fast, and Brabham & Magnussen did just that. But yeah the R8 was on a different level.

It's not just "told" that they replaced the rear end in minutes, you can still find the original TV coverage on KZbin of them doing it for the first time at Le Mans. If you like seeing these cars up close, you should definitely attend the races. I'm not sure if it's different in Europe, but in the IMSA series in North America, every ticket counts as a paddock pass, and it's not hard to get up pretty close with the cars and drivers.

Some really nice videos, I’ve seen the cars close up at classic events and they are truly works of art with incredible attention to detail. Couple of points which people may find interesting. The whole modular approach was kind of stopped by the ACO to some extent. They didn’t like the rear axle change system as they felt changing that much of the car was a bit too much of an advantage. The rule was changed in that you can not replace the gearbox casing anymore. Secondly with regards to aero. For sure if anyone has seen the latest LMP2’s or LMP1’s naked they are very much like a single seater underneath now. Just incredible. The air is channeled so much now through the body rather than over it. Lastly I could be wrong but maybe the rollover hoop modification was due to the accident with Michele Alboreto. During testing the first version of the car it took off and landed on its roof. The impact just crushed the roll hoop and he didn’t survive. I think the car landed on a guard rail but I could be wrong. Very sad and a tragic loss. Still a pretty safe race car though. I’ve seen some huge accidents recorded in the R8 and the driver walked away, that flat bottom though was always a danger. However you’ll notice on the R15 the regulations were changed and the cars were mandated to have two roll over structures.
@OsellaSquadraCorse
@OsellaSquadraCorse 4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, Michele went over the guardrail at the Lausitzring. The first impact took off the rollhoop, so it wasn't there when it hit again on the guardrail, before landing on the access road around the oval. Sad day, Michele was SUCH a nutcase off the track, and a great driver on it; really in his element in sportscars. I'm always reminded of him when I see Patrese return to historic and GT racing: Michele tried to persuade Riccardo to 'un-retire' and join him at Le Mans in the late 90's, but Riccardo said he was finished with competitive racing.

I was standing in the tribunes across from the pits at Le Mans in 2000 when they did that very gearbox change. The astonishment from the commentators and actually watching it unfold was incredible. Rules changed the next year to outlaw such major sub-assemblies being swapped out (needed to finish with the same gearbox case, engine block and other key components that you started with IIRC) but Audi made an overnight step-change in how to run an endurance outfit and prepare to win.

Joest deserve a LOT more credit than Audi do for that one.. Their role in understanding how to win Le Mans; how to run and how to beat works teams, and for the first time being able to work with a manufacturer in developing a car from scratch was invaluable. Joest designed that quick-change, not Audi, using the lessons learned from 20+ years of racing (or beating) Porsche.

The boy racer of the 80s Vauxhall NovA, which when I sold it in 1999 in mint condition would never think it would be worth 7k plus. Pretty standard dry-break racing couplings those.. The real key was the gearbox & axle mounting (developed by Joest, more than Audi...) - so effective that the ACO changed the rules to prevent gearbox changes in-race, as everybody would have developed them, at huge cost, just to keep up.

You don’t even need to point anything out, I believe that the kind of audience that seeks out this kind of content knows what an intercooler or an exhaust manifold looks like. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Audi secret garage visit. some great info on the cars, but i found the content void of something... so i rewatched all 4 videos. and 2 points began to show, when you spoke about the vehicles you gave some great details but at points it was crying out for some period race footage so we could see the cars moving. and point number 2, you went into great detail telling us about the cars, but nothing of the people, the builders, the drivers, the team owner, the fans, to really complete the picture i'd have liked to have heard anecdotes of people who were involved in the cars in period. still though great series. and i hope to see more like this.

I’ve seen F1 cars up close and was always disappointed in how weak they looked. With LM prototypes and GTs I am always blown away by the thoughtfulness and workmanship that goes into each car. They really are built like tanks, built to last the distance.

TRAINing the world Audi made the R8 in particular very tough. One year at Le Mans, McNish crashed his R8 at the Porsche Curves HARD in the rain. He somehow slowly crabbed the horrid looking wreck back to the pits for repairs while McNish ended up with a concussion. In earlier decades, he would have been dead after such a violent crash, especially at Le Mans.

Nice video as usual, but the Audi R8 story really started in 1999, not with the R8C though, but rather the R8R.

R8R and R8C. Though the R8R was a bit of a late start, they were both entered for Le Mans 1999; only the Roadster finished, and the Coupe was dropped, with the R8R concept taken forward to become the R8. The R8C was the first Audi LMP designed and built though.

Funny typo... The "Veloqx Partners" decals on the front bodywork... Velolqx... lol How is that possible during a restoration like that? :D

It's built so well, that the modular design is actually banned. Having it built in 3 parts made it too easy for teams to basically rebuild the car from scratch while other teams struggled or just plain retired after a component failure. Audi was dominating on the track so well, that's why they were forced to change the nose on the R15, and still won anyway. Their foray into TDI warranted excellent reliability results, and set the pace for Diesel Hybrid technology that every hybrid road car should be using to this day. And the tech was already there with Volkswagen's Diesel electric hybrid concept car that was supposed to compete against the Prius. Elon Musk is an idiot for not realizing this.

All great cars from different eras. Anything adorned with Wiggins clamps does it for me. It's a shame though that Audi don't support their heritage road cars with availability of parts like some other marques do. Perhaps you could have a word in their ear :)

@@bradarsenault6984 go to 6:56 see the two shiny looking rods that run lengthwise with the car? They connect to the gold colored brace at the rear?@the front they connect to the pivot arms/ or cantalevers what ever you want to call them lol. Is that the swaybar setup? That gold brace must pivot when the suspension cycles. Otherwise it just it would just keep everything locked up , unable to cycle.

@bradarsenault6984 4 жыл бұрын
@@joedmac78 joedmac78 yes, that is a sort of like a sway bar, they are more commonly referred to as anti roll bars in this application but basically the same thing. instead of being attached to the lower control arm, like on a typical road car, it's attached to the bellcrank. If one wheel is pushed up, like what happens when weight is shifter in a corner and the body rolls, the other wheel will also be pushed up, to resist the body roll. If you look at the link that attaches the two sides you will notice there are 3 holes to attach the rod end to, allowing more it less leverage over the pivot. Those rod ends are usually adjustable as well, either to allow for or influence ride height. The details of it are beyond my knowledge of the overall adjustment lengths of the individual links, though.
