Installing resilient channel (res channel) is an effective low cost method for reducing sound transmission through walls and ceilings. It is installed perpendicular to the ceiling joists and wall studs. Res channel is suitable to use in multiple unit buildings, recording studios, and to improve room to room sound transmission . Drywall only touches the resilient channel ensuring sound transmission never travels through the wood (houses) or steel structure (condo). It can be used for both wall and ceiling applications. The product used in this video is manufactured by Bailey and costs approximately $4.20 CND per 12 ft length.
Material List:
Resilient channel
Measuring tape
Tin snips
Impact driver or drill
Pencil or marker
1 ¼ " type w pan head screws (for wood studs or joists)
10mm (3/8") type s pan head screws (for steel studs or joists)

Very nice video. I only have one suggestion. Measure 16” from the wall on your second channel if you are putting first one 1/4” or 1/2” or more from the wall that way your 4th channel’s center will be exactly at 48” or 8th channel at 96”( the width or length of standard drywall) if you measure 16” from the first, you might be off center later on and run into more problems. Cheers.

Ideally, you are running the drywall the opposite direction. for 5/8" ceiling drywall there is not need to fasten it right at the edges, within 6" is fine and actually better for STC purposes.

I'm currently soundproofing a wall that adjoins two bedrooms. Considered using the resilient channel, but I was concerned about the limited load bearing capability (large flat screen TV, etc). So I've decided to go with soundproofing insulation and two 5/8" drywall boards on one side (1/2" drywall is already in place on one side), putty on the boxes, and green glue in between the boards.
@simpsonpropertiesltd
@simpsonpropertiesltd 3 жыл бұрын
You can always install wood blocking where your wall mounted TV will be installed. Then you use long fasteners that will go through the drywall and the wood. With that method you can still install res channel. You are right, the res channel would not be strong enough to support heavy objects like a TV.

IMO that is a waste of time. The main reason I use res channel is to have a flat ceiling. The res channel helps fix any imperfections in your ceiling joists. It does help reduce vibration a bit but not much. If you're that concerned about vibration i would recommend you look into using Genie Clips. They are specifically designed for res channel installations.
@davesun
@davesun Ай бұрын
You missed installing the resilliant clips that the channels snap into. These have rubber contacts with the joists and greatly reduce vibration transfer. you just lowered the ceiling and vibration will transfer throught the channel you installed directly to the joist.

I don't suppose you could tell us the make/model you used in this video as I'd like to get ones for my basement that are adjustable like you showed. Also, my basement ceiling isn't level, so I 1x4 strapping with shims between it and the joists to level the ceiling to the strapping. Do I install the res channel in line with the strapping, or across the strapping? Thanks!
@simpsonpropertiesltd

You have to use IC (insulated can) pot lights if they are going to be in a ceiling cavity with insulation. I can’t remember the brand used in this video. I use a different style of pot lights now that have to clips that hold the pot lights. The brand of pot lights I currently use is called Ovid. Which ever brand you buy I would recommend getting 90+ CRI, it’s referred to as healthy lighting. If you go in Ovid’s website they have lots of information on the topic. Install the res channel perpendicular to the strapping (opposite way).

I installed two layers. One at the top of the cavity, air gap, then a layer flush with the bottom of the ceiling joists. Most electrical, plumbing, etc runs through the center of a joist. It’s easier to have a gap in between the two layers.

T Willey thanks I appreciate it! Measure the width of your room in inches. Then divide it by 16 or 24 depending on the spacing you’re going to use. I prefer 16” O.C. to provide more support. Now you know how many rows are required. Then measure how long the room is. Divide that by the length of your resilient channel. In my case I used 12’ lengths. Now you can calculate how many lengths are required. It’s always a good idea to order 10% extra material. Any extras can be returned especially if you buy it from Home Depot. So, how are you boxing in your lights so they don't create a sound leak? 2) does it matter that much? 3) recommendations on can lights? Sorry for the delayed response. Those are standard IC rated pot lights. Two layers of Rockwool Safe’N’Sound insulation was used around the cans. There is not much more that can be done. I would recommend using Ovid or Liteline Luna pot lights. If budget allows they offer much better quality lights and are easier to install. Recessed can lights are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

I prefer to install the resilient channel at 16” OC. This provides more support for the drywall. The extra amount of res channel that is used for 16” OC vs 24” OC is marginal and is worth the cost IMO. You can use drywall screws or pan head screws. Both will work. I prefer the pan head screws because the mushroom shaped screw head provides a bit more meat to hold the res channel up. I hope this clears up your questions. If you have anymore let me know.

I noticed that you are using new construction can lights directly screwed into joists. I am redoing my ceiling and instead, I am using a remodel can light, which will sit on the drywall. The lights will be covered by sound boxes (OSB + cement board with green glue in-between). The box will then be screwed to joists via an L type sound clip (DC-04). I am doing this because my ceiling will have almost 50 can lights, so the sound leak from each light would add up otherwise. I am also installing Roxul AFB 3, two layers, plus Green Glue Whisper Clips and Hat Channels, Two layers of 5/8 dry wall (with green glue in the middle).

Thanks! Installing pot lights will definitely decrease your sound dampening. The more holes in your ceiling adds more areas for sound transmission loss. One way to decrease your this would be to build drywall boxes around the pot lights before you install your res channel & ceiling drywall. It would be very time consuming to do that. Another option is to install one light fixture only per room that way your limiting the amount of holes. Personally, I really like the look and the light provided by pot lights. Especially for basements because they have such a low profile. Check out my soundproofing a ceiling video if you haven't already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWbRhWaGerisb5I

Is it important to reverse the Flange of the 2nd-from-the-edge Res-Chan on that opposite edge? 2. IF #1 is YES, then are the Channel Flanges reversed near the wall/ceiling center to be consistent to these 2nd-from-the-edge Flange directions?

Great Video...I do have a question though. The pot lights I've purchased are the Halo IC rated boxes. very similar looking to yours in the video but without the 3 screws to lower the inside cone. Could I just glue & nail a 1/2" strip to the bottom of the ceiling joist where the pot light will go then make the pot light flush with the strip I nailed on just as if it was the bottom of the joist? It lowers the pot light enough but will this be OK to do? Is 1/2" too much or will 1/4" do the job?

Stephen B what ever the thickness is of your res channel that's how much your pot lights need to be lowered. You can get that dimension from the res channel spec sheet. To be honest I can't stand Halo pot lights from Home Depot. Since I'm an electrical contractor I buy all my lighting material from an electrical supplier and never from a big box store. If possible I would return those lights and install the proper ones for this application rather than trying to MacGyver something.

Thanks for your Vid's very informative. I'm looking to add sound reduction in the basement and we share a wall with our neighbour. Is adding QuietRock type drywall on ceilings and shared wall a waste of money given HVAC sound transfer and floor joists running through our shared wall? Thanks! #1) Always install drywall on your ceiling first or else you will get cracks in your corners. The drywall on your walls provides support for your ceiling in the corners. #2) Your ceiling drywall should be butted up to the perimeter of all your walls. Do not leave any gaps. #3) Don't leave any gaps when installing drywall. It creates more work when you do your mudding & taping.

You are probably already done but for anyone else finding this, besides doing a sleeve extension, you can modify it and get some registers that are 'old work' style. I modified my steel duct to have insulated flex duct for the last ~6' and then attached these. It ensured the duct was physically isolated and helps to reduce some of the sound transfer. Far more overkill than register extension sheet metal of course, but good if the priority is sound reduction. www.hvacquick.com/catalog_files/Airtec_MV_Instructions.pdf

If your ceiling height is not an issue under duct work you can install res channel on the bottom of the soffit. Using res channel on the sides of the soffit is a bit over kill but would provide the best results. It all depends on what the end use of the space is going to be. If you're building a home theatre and want to reduce vibration noise then you may want to install it. If it's just a recreational room maybe your money and time can be better spent elsewhere. The other thing I'm curious about is overlapping the channel ends. Wouldn't this transmit sound vibration between channels rather than dampening it? I suppose the channels are contacting the same joist...
@simpsonpropertiesltd

You’re right. The manufacturer states you can use 24” OC spacing. I prefer to use 16” OC for additional support, especially if 5/8” drywall is being used. Overlapping the channel is no different then one long continuous res channel. Keep in mind res channel is one small aspect that “helps” reduce vibration. Depending on what level of sound dampening you’re trying to achieve their are many other aspects that need to be done. The main feature that I like about using res channel is it helps eliminate minor uneven spots between various ceiling joists.

I now have it all hung, taped, and mudded on the ceiling. I went with 24" OC, and sparingly screwed it in place. I used roughly 4 screws in the centers and 5 or 6 on the ends. I also caulked the RC (res channel) where it meets the drywall. Where the staggered joints are, I cut the RC so that it's not running entirely across the other drywall panels. It seems like it'd create less sound penetration and also saved on RC. It's somewhat of an experiment on my end. I left roughly a 1/4" gap between the walls and filled them in with caulk. It does not flex as much as I would've imagined. It has (so far) not cracked at any joints. The neighboring rooms were furred with pine 1x3 and the sound is stupidly loud in the ceiling regardless of the large amount of insulation. So I have only used RC in one area of the basement which is below my daddys bedroom. I have to say, this shit makes quite a difference. I haven't heard that old farts TV and he hasn't angrily stomped on the floor as a signal to STFU.

What did you mean by alternating the flange orientation? Looking at Bailey's site, they have the flanges oriented all the same.

Also noticed that "Channels should be spaced at 24” o.c. for joists spaced at 16” o.c.; and at 16” o.c. for joist spaced at 24” o.c. "

By having the flange away from the wall on your outer pieces you have more surface area supporting the drywall and less of a gap where the drywall is not supported. Orientation of the flanges is not critical you just want to make sure the O.C. measurements are all the same.

I went beyond what the manufacturer recommends and installed the channel every 16 O.C. even though my ceiling joists are not 24" O.C. I always like to go above minimum code when building and don't mind leaving a few dollars on the table to have a better product that will last generations.

@@simpsonpropertiesltd The thing is RC is already overbuilt so that you can use less of them. Them more use use means the more the wall is coupled. You are giving more support to the drywall but reducing the effectiveness of the RC. So you are spending more to to use RC over wood furring, then spending even more to make your RC worse.

Yes it will. As Darren said it’s designed to support two layers of 5/8” drywall.

Great Video! Would you alternate the flange side on the resilient channel every 16 inches as you go for more support for the sheetrock?

Thanks. No that’s not required.
