No you do not need it in your not going to play in clay or sticky mud, cause you can go under water and it won’t do nothing the BOV only spit out air does not suck anything back in and only other reason to put it on would be to eliminate the woosh sound totally can’t hear it at all, it’s like you don’t have a BOV just so you know and thanks for the questions have a great week
