Get extra so you have some for repairs down the road, but mostly so the color is consistent. To ensure consistent color, there are color/date codes printed on the bundle wrapping. Make sure they are consistent. Even a small shade difference can be easily seen on a large unbroken surface.

Hey Shannon, on the point of lanyards while roofing, in December, I took on a job installing a TARP with strapping on top to hold down the tarp. We DID NOT have any fall protection in place. It was addressed a few times but yet it still was not put in place. Lo and behold we got up there anyway. Can you see where this is going? Anyway, it just so happens as I was about to screw down the last bit of strapping the drill ran out of power. So I went down the ladder to get the other battery and replace the drained one. When I went back up I still had snow on my boots. When I got to the edge to resume my work, I slipped off about 22 feet. I fractured 3 vertebrae in my neck, 2 in my back, and also fractured my sternum. It just so happens that it was supposed to be a quick cash job, for a temporary fix. As of today, I am not yet cleared to go back to work. Anyway the moral of the story is(for anybody that is reading this-and I can't stress it enough)don't be stupid like us: meaning me, because nobody will help you when you need it. Not the doctors, the government, or sometimes family. Sorry for the book I just wrote, but I had to put that out there. WORK SAFE PEOPLE.

Also you might want to buy all the shingles you need for your project b4 taking off the old ones... I'm in a rural area, had 1 side of the roof to do and... couldn't find the same color! Couldn't wait for the time needed for delivery, so had to switch to the closest color product... It's a small modest house but still:))

Thank you for this video, I live in Canada, Toronto and I have to do my roof again after 18 years. The contractor was using the IKO shingles on my roof and I was told that the product has 25 years of warranty, however, the shingles on the sunny side started to fall apart already after 18 years. I have contacted IKO and they are offering me the warranty reimbursement ONLY if I use their shingles again. My question is what is the normal lifespan for the shingles in general? How good these IKO shingles in comparison to the other brands?

I looked into renting air nailers. For the cost I decided to buy two quality ones. Figure I can sell them later only used for one roof job they should sell easy. Getting some cordless tools also I can use them at work my snap on cordless tools are ready for replacement. I looked into renting a lift ladder but it's $150 a day I'm thinking four weekends to get the job done hopefully faster. So at four weekends I can almost buy a lift ladder but I'm not sure how easy I can unload it after I'm done.

Something as simple as getting your supplier to deliver the shingles to the roof can go a long way. Once we bought a bunch of good quality bundles for cheaper price than it usually is, but we had to carry up all of it with a ladder. +30c that day and we were just miserable through that whole job. First and last time we got cheaper roof shingles lol

Mr. Shannon, I am very often visiting your videos when I need some help. I think I saw your video about roofing. I am here this early morning to ask you a question since you are contractor. I have plan to extend my front porch end my idea is to build a gable roof on existing one that is the same one you are working on in this video. Do I have to remove shingles and start from playwood or I can just layout plates of 2x8 on the shingles insted. I have a permit but not sure how to start.

shingles should be cut tight to pipe boot and shouldn't be any exposed nails on the boot , if installed correctly you shouldn't see any nails on rare occasions one may have to nail bottom of boot if temperatures are cold out , this may have been the case in your situation
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 жыл бұрын
+The Bass Master Everyone has their ways and I'm not saying yours is wrong. I like to have a space between the boot and shingle to create a larger "valley" for quick unrestricted rain/freezing rain to escape without backing up under shingle if it gets iced up. Thats my theory . As for the bottom nails I have always done that also to prevent ice from backing up and forcing the cap up and releasing the tar/cement. Not sure where you are from, I'm in the plains of Canada.
