I do not doubt the starter strip shingles are nice ,but I do not believe there is anything wrong with using an upside down shingle as starters ! I guess from roofing my entire life without starter strips being sold or no one I worked with or around ever using them , Never saw a problem with my upside down shingle starters ! I did a lot of slate roof to shingle ,new plywood ,30 pound felt ,all hand nailed and never had leaks or other issues ! I like the concept of the starters and am not knocking them ,just don't think they are 100% necessary over upside down shingles .Good video though .Thanks

Thanks for watching, and I always respect tried and true experience and don’t necessarily disagree with you. Being that manufacturers require them, and they are cheap, cheaper then shingles I think it’s worth using. Will a roof leak if you use upside down shingles properly, no.
@woodworkingarenas5067
@woodworkingarenas5067 7 ай бұрын
That is true. I have seen roofs that are in need of a reroof and some have upside shingles as starters. I think it's a recommendation these days for warranty purposes.

Electro galvanized nails are garbage if you using them around the beach because of the salt air or anywhere that you get a lot of salt air they will rust their garbage. I don’t like electric galvanized nails. I think you should use galvanized nails on every roof, hot dipped galvanized nails they sell them for the nail gun. Most roofers won’t use them because they cost more. I recommend using them and not using electric galvanized nails, promise you there Junk

When you just flip the regular shingle upside down it does not have the glue strip at the bottom edge for wind resistance it puts it in the middle and that’s not manufacturer recommended. Great video on how to do shingles correctly. Thanks.

What nail sizes are recommended to install at the eaves?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Depending on the thickness of the sheeting. If you have exposed eaves make sure you don’t penetrate through. Even though the manufacturer states that you should. In California we have allot of eaves that are open and not enclosed soffit. So we have to use 5/5-3/4 nails. If your eaves are enclosed with soffits 1-1/4 are our go to

Will I still need a starter strip even if I put a ice shield?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Yes most definitely. The starter strip does 2 important things, covers the gaps in the bottom shingles, you may argue that Ice and water shield does this. The second thing that is just as important is it helps adhere the first row of shingles. Just as importantly it is required by all manufacturers.

Those are all video's on our list, we have actually already filmed the plumbing vent. Still need to do the Ohagan and dormer, the sun light is essentially going to be the same details used on a plumbing vent, but I will put that on my list as well. I'll try to remember to send you a link once we have them done. Thanks for the ideas!

With GAF, the system is a long, thin roll of starter strip rather than the thick break off shingles you show. With it, I will be able to do the front of my project in one 20’ piece. I suppose the main concern will be being careful the nails don’t end up too close to where a seem will be? Also I assume the rake pieces go on afterward?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Put starter on the Rake as well. If it is self adhered starter strip. Which I believe the rolls are no nails are needed.

“Nails should be nice and flat” (oh shit these are all over driven) “We over drove a nail here to show you what one looks like, pay no attention to all the other over driven nails…just do what I say not do what I do” lol Just ball busting, most guns will never shoot every nail flat especially a rigid lol. But great instructional video …I know it’s good practice especially in high wind areas but I personally don’t nail my starters low, I actually nail them higher than the nail line on the first row of shingles. Certain gutter guards need to slide up between the drip edge and the shingle and the low nails interfere with the installation. Be safe up there 👍🏼

Great roofing videos - best I have ever seen anywhere - very informative with no annoying background music - I have been working on repairing my own asphalt shingle roof, and I have always been confused about how the 'starter strip and the drip edge and the fascia and the rain gutter' all come together to prevent leaks and water damage - but your videos have answered all my questions. Thank you.

Wouldn’t the tar side with the rock granules be faced down if you want adhesion to the drip edge?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
No, because the drip edge is covered by the underlayment at the eaves. The starter shingle is nailed down. The adhesive strip is needed to adhere the shingles down.

@@RoofRepairSpecialist You definitely missed the point! All I’m trying to say is most company’s do such things like this, where the office crew go out on the floor doing videos like they do all the work and know what they talking about when they probably are out on the floor a hand full of times per year, and not giving the opportunity to workers to who would love to shine and be able to do something like this.
