Did this exact thing and it worked great. Also I used silicone around the edges to really seal any buckle around the edges! Thanks

My soffit space is blocked from the attic space by 2x6s that fit in between the rafters. Because of the tight soffit space, I was unable to cut them from the outside, and had to crawl into the attic and remove them from the inside. Depending on the slope of your roof, this may be quite difficult because you're so close to the edge of the house. My previous house had these blocks as well and they were a major pain.

Hey Mark, How far APART to set Soffet Vents... or, How many vents would you install into a soffet that's 64-ft. long on the west side of the house? Thanks kindly!

I have done this twice in houses built in the 1970's in a temperate climate. The roof rafter were 24" on center. I used smaller vents but put one in each rafter bay to get the additional protection from ice damming. There is no harm from having extra air intake. In addition to the soffit vents make sure you have baffles in the attic and enough insulation. This is a great project that will make you house more comfortable in the summer and probably lower your electric bill.

So -- my builder used a circular saw. He cut two 4 inch long cuts, broke out the middle with a hammer and called it good. Ended up with an 8"x16" vent on top of a 1"x4" hole. Lazy son of a b.

Can I install one of these in a single garage that doubles as a laundry/dryer room? Will it cool it off? Or would an exhaust fan be more ideal? Just trying to think of a more energy efficient option.

The primary purpose of these vents is to prevent the garage from getting too warm when there’s snow on the roof to prevent ice damning. Your garage can have several vents along the eaves as well as a ridge vent that runs the peak. Google image a ridge vent. Yes, these would help cool your garage, however, if there is a finished deck between the garage area and under the roof, it may prevent any air flow from reaching the outdoors. Maybe cutting a vent in the ceiling drywall of the interior would work. I would check with your local code first.

Hey Mark thanks for the video. I was wondering if I can apply this same procedure to hardiboard on the crawl space of my home.

Hi what is the benefit of installing those vents? Will it keep your attic cooler? I was thinking of using that size because mine are very small 3 inch circles and my attic over my garage is absolutely terrible heat
@markgreervideo4672
@markgreervideo4672 8 жыл бұрын
It's primary purpose is to prevent ice damning in the winter here in the midwest. When snow accumulates on your roof, a warm roof melts the snow under the pile and forms a puddle that seeps through the shingles and felt paper to the sheathing and into the house. Happens a lot here. Happened to my house. "The U.S. Federal Housing authority recommends a minimum of at least 1 square foot of attic ventilation (evenly split between intake and exhaust) for every 300 square feet of attic floor space."

I have about 5 small 2.5 inch if I were to replace with bigger rectangular ones would it cool down the attic? I'm in the south
@markgreervideo4672
@markgreervideo4672 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with code for Southern regions. I would assume you have to have a ridge vent along the top to allow the heat to escape, and vents in the soffit to enable the air intake. First make sure you have a ridge vent along your peak. My garage did not have one until a couple years ago. Then with the added soffit vents it definitely keeps it cooler over all. Not sure what the harm would be in adding too much ventilation.

what about baffels
@Markcgreer
@Markcgreer 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, great point. I installed these vents on a garage which does not have attack insulation and did not require baffels, but yes, if you install a new vent on the insulated house portion, you need to climb up in your attack and tack up a $2 styrofoam baffel over the studs where the vent was added. How did I not mention that?

How do I cover them for cold months. Temperature drops below zero here in Nebraska, do they sell covers for this vent for when it gets too cold???.
@bigdog8008
@bigdog8008 3 жыл бұрын
Why would you want to cover them? You don't want a warm attic - that's how ice dams form. And - if you cover the soffit vents in the attic, where do the ridge or static vents draw their air from? Answer: the house as well as other vents. And here in Nebraska, if the other vents are covered with snow - guess what happens. In Nebraska as well as many other states - if you have cottonwoods, guess where the cotton goes. Check the soffit vents from time to time. It also would have been nice if presenter included a link to who much soffit ventilation is required based on living space.

@@bigdog8008 i thought that with the very top vents would be enough for cold months. The winters are very cruel here , below zero.. The attic can probably get enough cool to not get any ice in attic. At least I hope so.

Attics, believe it or not, should be within about 10-20 degrees of outside temp. This creates a balanced environment inside the attic. Proper venting reduces moisture, and increases the life span of the roofing material. And, you don't want ice dams. You should have proper insulation on the floor of the attic as well. Check your "Climate" area for the proper depths of each material (fiberglass, cellulose, etc).

Hello...how many vents per side, how far apart? Is there a general rule?
@Markcgreer
@Markcgreer 6 жыл бұрын
manicmandownup The distance between vents will vary, depending on the volume of ventilation needed. The ratio for most homes is 1 sq ft of ventilation for 150 sq ft of attic space. The resulting figure would be divided in half, with half being exhaust (ridge vent), and the other half being intake (soffit vents).
