@YourAverageRoofer hey dylon,I was wondering for places where high wind is a factor. Is there any other addition steps you have to do so the first layer of shingles don't blow off..or is a starter strip good enough..?

I don’t think that matters as much as the paper and flashing underneath it. I believe you’re just as like;y to have wind-driven water moving in at this location. If water happens to drain down under the shingle above the starter strip AND under the starter strip (you probably have other issues to deal with), the paper and flashing are still going to drain water off the roof.

Great video. Only thing I would do different is I would put the eave starter on first then overlap the rake starter. Backward laps erk me lol. Outside of that your procedure is legit. Would suggest using a self adherring waterproofing membrane on the eaves and gables. They should extend the the starting edge of the drip edge in case you are in snow country and have gutters. The underlayment should lap the drip edge in either case to prevent water from running back and soaking your deck.
@Average_Roofer

gary24752 use ice and water shield along all eaves, gables and valleys making sure they cover 18” inside any heat bearing walls. Under the drip edge along eaves. And over the rake edge metal.

@@Average_Roofer In your earlier video "How To Install Drip Edge on a Roof", I think you said the opposite ... in that video, I think you said the drip edge goes under the underlayment (or ice & water shield) along eaves and on top of the underlayment at rake edges. Seems to me if you did your first eve starter strip as suggested .... that if something happened somewhere between the eve and peak ... water would run down and have a path to "UNDER" the shingle? NO? Why not run the eve piece first and the gable piece on top?

@@alexw4225 I'll answer it... The starter shingle is only a waterproofing element at the butt ends of the regular shingles along the eave edge. The UNDERLAYMENT is the waterproofing under the starter shingle and that's where the water will end up anyway so that 5" strip of starter bucking water is inconsequential

I recently cleaned out gutters on my roof. I noticed that there was no starter shingles installed. The first course was the first full shingle. I also noticed that this first course overhung the drip edge anywhere from 5/8" to 1". This caused that first course of shingles to droop over (bend, curve, whatever) in the hot sun. The home builders roofer said they were installed per manufactures specs. Any opinions out there?

@Average_Roofer
@Average_Roofer 6 ай бұрын
You do not necessarily need them, however it will help with additional adherence of the shingles along the gables, is creates a straight line to follow while cutting your shingles, and it also helps reduce the changes of wind driven rain from penetrating the roof horizontally. Although it’s not always required, it is HIGHLY recommended, and most manufacturers state the use of it in their installation procedures.

The problem I see with this video is when you were talking about the bump you over laped your corners so there's gunna be a even bigger bump there. And you didn't over lap the corresponding starters on the eves or rakes so I dont see why you have to over lap the corners. And I'm pretty sure bdr uses normal shingles 4 the starters

@timphillips8966
@timphillips8966 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was 1/4" beyond the drip edge, BUT this is ONLY for drip edge that has a 1" lip that extends beyond the edge of the roof! There are drip edge metals that are only a simple 90 degree bend with a small 3/16" bend at the bottom that is the actual "drip edging" that kicks the water out away from the fascia. Using this type of drip edge you'd extend the starter shingle one full knuckle (1") beyond the drip edge and not the 1/4".

@@renorican1 dont tuck your rain pants into your rubber boots , wall flashings come out over the shingles, bottoms up , its good practise to water proof the roof deck to the wall after you remove siding , a primed self adhered membrane is a good choice, then shingle up to wall ,install flashing using only wall fasteners , nothing through deck, have metal bent with a safety edge and half inch cant bend down ward to make it resist folding up in a wind or better yet through in some roof cement under it . Just not so much it leaks out all over roof in the sun when metal heats up. then instal sidingback over top .

@CardinalEgan 3 жыл бұрын
It's an eyeball thing. I bet his 1/4 inch ends up being 1/2 inch most of the time. I wouldn't go more than 1 inch though. Heavy rain can overshoot the gutters, and gutters are difficult to clean if you can't fit a gloved hand into the gap.

When the water runs 1 inch past the drip edge metal, gravity and momentum constricts water from turning 45 degrees creating a second drip edge. If the forces of the wind turn the water , the underneath metal drip edge blocks the water.

11/12 pitch? Did you buy a church? I replaced slate on a 10/12 pitch and that scared the hell out of me. Use the Pythagoras theory and see how out of square you are and adjust from there. Depending on what the manufacturer states on the package you may be able to snap a straight line up from bottom to top and another one stepped 6"-12" back. Make sure the first line is shorter than the furthest distance to the edge of a shingle. You don't want to have a little piece needing to be put in on the end. Also measure to the opposite end of the roof and see what the piece will be to avoid little pieces.

Gable and rake aren't the same thing! Applying a starter shingle butt out on the rake is meant to direct the water down the roof to the eve where it is supposed to go

Today I had a roofing/gutter company come look at my hanging gutter I requested a quote on the repair. They came out to look at the damage but the person they sent was under the impression that he was there to inspect the roof. I was heading home from work when he had arrived he asked if he could go up to take a look while I headed there I stupidly said yes, I’m thinking okay he need to get up there to inspect the damage to the gutters. As I am driving home I get notifications from my ring camera I open it up and see my love camera, watching him picking up shingles off the ground and throwing them into his car. When I finally arrive we go up the the roof I’m thinking he’s going to show me the damage he saw on the gutters but instead he tell me right away have you seen your shingles lately I said no and he point out the am area that had a patch of missing shingles, I asked him those are the ones I seen you throw into ur car through my camera. He responds with oh I was them cleaning up since they were already hanging and continues on to sell me on getting a whole new roof replaced with no out of pocket cost besides the deductible to the insurance company. He mentions how because I am missing shingles they can file a claim for wind damage. I’m thinking to myself well clearly he ripped the shingles off and is now trying to tell me the damage was there and I need a new roof. I tell him again that I only called them for a gutter repair quote and he’s like of well I was told this was a roof job. How shady was that and what do you recommend I do. Sorry I’m not sure if this is the place to ask this but I’m lost as a young clueless homeowner with zero guidance it seems everyone is just trying to take advantage of that. That company sent me a contact to get the roof replaced after the whole ordeal and offered to get me in contact with someone for just the gutter if I chose to just do the gutter. Which was my whole plan to begin with but now I have missing shingles on my roof from where I believe this guy just ripped off for what ever reason other than to get me to contract them

thats wrong bud.. gable overlaps the eaves then cut a 45 from the gable overlap to the corner to expose the tar strip.

No, it isn't wrong and your method isn't wrong either. The only point the starter shingle is a "waterproofing" element is at the butt ends of the shingles (aka keyways). Move 18" away from the rake edge with the water and what does it run into? That's right, the top of the starter shingle. Where does it go after that? Under the starter shingle and on TOP of the UNDERLAYMENT where it continues over the drip edge and off the roof!

@@timphillips8966 Is it better to have them overlap or to cut at a 45° angle and butt them up? I also have question about repairing a section of a roof. Is there a good place to ask this?
