How to install the Britax Römer Max-WayPlus, Max-Way and Hi-Way

The Britax-Römer Max-Way, Max-Way Plus and Hi-Way are rear facing car seats up to 25kg. They are all installed in the car in the same way, so I have made this video for all three. There are few differences between the seats which I explain in the video, but the way that they are installed in the car is exactly the same.

Hello there and thank you for the great work! I just ordered max way and i would like to ask how do you know how much you should lower the recline bar?And also when the wedge is necessary?

The backrest should be about 20 to 35º from vertical depending on the child's age and how much they sleep. The slope of the seats in cars vary, so you have to adjust the recline bar and/or add the wedge to achieve the correct angle.

Do you have to retighten to seatbelt and straps before each journey? My son is nearly outgrowing his axissfix maxicosi rear facing, as is 86cm, looking for a long term rear facing seat to replace soon. We liked the maxicosi design because of the top tether as when we had a cybex the base broke 3 times, as we had to use the seatbelt which I felt left too much space for human error. No, these car seats stay in the car once fitted and while you may want to check that they're still tight every now and then, there is no need to redo it for every journey.

Many thanks for this video. I've followed the instructions and everything seems tight but the front of the seat (where the feet are) is still moving a little to the left and the right when I push it. Is that normal? Or should the seat be completely still even when you try to push it (meaning I'm doing something wrong)?

Hi, It should not move when you push it, so it sounds like the seat belt is not quite tight enough.

Thanks so much for this. I am struggling with the fit of my Maxway Plus. My daughter (18.4kg, 90cm) keeps slipping her arms out. Reading the manual, I think the shoulder straps are too low. The manual mentions uninstalling the seat and moving the shoulder straps up a slot. But there are no instructions at all for doing this. Is it obvious how to do it? I am so worried about uninstalling the car seat, it’s so complicated! Many thanks for any pointers you can give.

You don't need to uninstall the seat to adjust the height. You just reach behind the seat to move the headrest and straps up at the same time. If you want you can send me a message on facebook.com/rearfacingtoddlers and then I can send you a few pictures or a little video.

Hi, Yes one pair of straps is included and you can buy extra straps if you're using the seat in more than one car. They cost £20 incl postage.

Hi, great video! I am looking to purchase one of the Max Way Plus models and i wondered do you have a video or explanation of how to fit it to a front seat? 99% of the time we won't need it in the front but my husbands car is a Land RoverDefender with only temporary/fold out back seats so my son would need to go in the front in the proper car seats when travelling in that car. Just want to be sure it will be suitable. P.s there are no airbags to worry about. Thanks again. KR Clare

Does the max way plus take up as much room as an Axkid Minikid? I installed a Minikid in my car (2010 Chevrolet Aveo) and I could only get a solid fit when it was in the extended leg room position meaning I had to pull the passenger seat all the way forward. It wasn't practical for me to lose the passenger seat so didn't go for it. It seats are very soft and buckles are very long in the car. My daughter is 2yrs8m and will outgrow her Joie Stages at approx 3yrs6m ideally would like to keep RFing.

The Max-Way can be installed in a smaller space than the Minikid, but in cars with long buckles this may not be possible and you are likely to need the wedge, so you may end up with the same problem. The Long buckles are definitely a pain, they also have like a circular button to stop the belt buckle slipping too far down which made it such struggle to close the clips on the Minikid. I'm actually in the south east of Ireland, all shops around are closed due to Covid unfortunately. I am hoping they'll be open for a chance to fit by the end of the summer. 🤞🏼

That button is often in the way, but you can remove it quite easily with a blunt knife, and they are very cheap to replace should you ever need to.

Is the belt moving through the clips? In some cars the belts are quite thin and on those belts the clips can be a bit too loose. You can fix this problem by putting a small piece of fabric in the clip with the belt.

Is it OK to fit to the rear middle seat as the leg then sit on the column in the middle rather than the floor?

Yes, that's absolutely fine as long as it fits well and there is enough room for the leg.

I've installed my Maxway Plus in extended leg room. It's rock solid when I push the belt path, however, when going over any bigger bumps in the road while driving, the car seat sways slightly. I can't get the fit any more solid. Is there something wrong?

That doesn't sound right. Maybe the tethers aren't tight enough? You need to pull the tight before you extend the leg.

Doing the leg last will always give you the most solid fit.

It can be, but that only works while the child is very little. From around 18 months or so I'd say they need a bit of a gap.

Car's seats vary, some are more sloped than others, so to achieve the correct recline angle in every car, the bar is adjustable.
