@@AndyKruseChannel lol yup! At the end of the day, it's delivering the fuel to the intake. I just like the tuneability of the Edelbrock. I can change jets and/or metering rods without removing it or making a huge mess of fuel. I grew up with Holley carbs so I have my appreciation there too. But no these are fantastic carbs as well.

The 1406 is a popular Carb for our cars, particularly because it has some head room for engine upgrades, and offers an electric choke. However, it's tuned from the factory for economy and emissions control, which is why I modified it to be like its "performance" brother, the 1405. :)

Also, I bought the Summit Racing SUM-G1532 inline fuel filter/line for it, thinking it will help in keeping the inlet in front of the carb closer to where the original Autolite carb had it, but I haven't gotten far enough yet to hook it up. The vacuum advance line from the distributor goes to the carburetor, not the intake manifold. On my Carb it's the port on the left hand side (if you're looking at it from the front of the car), and it's called the "Timed Vacuum Port".

Hey andy thanks for this video, i am setting up my 1406 on a performer also i installed everything accordingly but my vacuum source i didn't get it from the pcv valve i got it from the manifold behind the carburetor and it seems to idle pretty funky, i tried to do a snap acceleration in park and it almost wants to stall i have to gently eas on the gas so it does shut off, Also i didn't put the gasket spacer you have on the video so probably i might have a vacuum leak maybe? Or could it be a bad accelerator pump? I bought the carburetor used so i installed it just like that, is there something im missing? Thanks
@AndyKruseChannel

Yes, you need a gasket between the carb and intake manifold. Vacuum leaks can cause the bogging you are referring to, but so can other issues. You might need to buy a rebuild kit if you don't know the status of the used carb. :)

Hey, Edelbrock brothers! Running a very similar setup, intake and all (performer RPM and AVS2)! I got a manual choke though, and now and I'm wondering if that was a bad choice. I don't have to mess with it ever really, but electric would probably keep it optimized! I hear people singing praise for Holley all the time, but I've never had a problem with my Edelbrock equipment! Runs well enough right out of the box, and tuning was breeze! Another great video!
@AndyKruseChannel

Thanks for the feedback! Having that manual choke isn't all bad, technically one would still need to dial up or down the choke on the side of the Carb for colder weather. Because of the winters we get here that car hasn't left the garage since November, so I don't really mess with the choke much.

Why do you need that spacer on there?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 2 жыл бұрын
The biggest reason is to keep the Carb from getting heat-soaked by the heat carried through the intake manifold. It also provides a little space under the carb for routing things like the heater hose, wiring, etc without needing to cram things in place. :)

Yes and no. They'll work right out of the box, but the idle mixture screws and throttle adjustment screws will need to be dialed in after you install it. From there you'll want to adjust the choke (if the carb has one) and then you can dive into the Jets and Rods. :)

A while back I swapped the jets and rods back to stock because I was finding that the upgraded ones I put in were a pinch too rich for my liking. I didn't have the sizes that were between the stock sizes and the upgraded sizes, so I just put them back to stock with the intention that I'd get back in there and tweak them again. Since that time, I had decided to do the 347 build and I figured that I'd need different sizes again, so I just put a pin in it until the engine build was finished. :)

@AndyKruseChannel 2 жыл бұрын
@@bucky0868 Those three ports each have a different job, but important in their own way. All three are vacuum ports, and none of them should be left open as it will greatly affect how the car runs. The easiest port is the center port, and it's most common use is to connect it to one of the two valve covers for the PCV (usually the passenger side). The PCV is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation, a quasi-emissions control device that pulls vapors and pressure from the crank case. In the video I didn't have that specific hose and new PCV, but I have since added it, you can see it in later videos. The port on your left hand side of the carb is the "Timed Vacuum Port". It's mostly for vehicles with distributors with emissions controls. I don't think I've seen anyone use that port for cars like ours, but somebody probably uses it. The port on your right hand side of the carb is the "Manifold Vacuum Port" and this is the one you want to connect to your vacuum advance port on the distributor, if you're using the vacuum advance mechanism on the distributor. Some people don't use that feature on their Distro, so they just cover that port on the carb. That spacer has some additional benefits, but they're minor. One, that plastic spacer isolates the carb from the intake manifold that can get hot. A hot carb will run less efficient that a cooler unit. Also, the spacer adds another inch of "runner length", potentially creating a pinch more torque, but I cannot verify that, it's just what some manufacturers have done with more modern cars. And lastly, the added height, which may or may not help in your setup. :)

Thanks! My first mustang had that tube, but I damaged it before I realized what it was. @AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 2 жыл бұрын
The 1406 has an electric choke and is tuned towards fuel economy. I think it has something to do with California Emissions Legal something something. For me, it was easier to get the 1406 than to buy a 1405 and buy an electric choke kit. I definitely want the electric choke because of the temperature delta through out the year in my area. These days fuel economy almost sounds more interesting than extra power, but since I rarely drive the car, I'd rather have a little more punch than an extra 2 miles per gallon. In another video I replaced the Jets and Rods with the same sizes found in the 1405, but a while later I ended up going back to the stock 1406 sizes (car was running too rich). I could have found sizes in between the 1406 and 1405 sizes, but I figured I'd deal with that later. I think my biggest issue is that the 1406 (600cfm) is too large for a relatively stock 289. Even though I have an upgraded intake manifold and complete exhaust, the 1406 is too much for this motor. A 500 or 550 cfm unit would probably be a better fit.

Without that black phenolic spacer below the Carb, yes. If you wanted that spacer, you have to get an air filter with a "drop frame", where the bottom tray of the filter is shaped to allow a 3" tall filter without sacrificing something like the hood. Also, the hood scope on this hood is purely aesthetic, the previous owner grafted it onto the stock hood and never cut a hole for air flow, so you could use my hood as a gauge on how your setup my fit. :)

The 1406 has the same 600 cfm as the 1405, but it has an electric choke and it is tuned for fuel economy (leaner) from the factory. The changes I made swapped out the rods and jets from my 1406 to the same units used in the 1405, which gives the Carb a slightly more "performance" tune right out of the gate. I will need to further tune my Carb to eek out every last bit of power, but I'm waiting until I decide where I'm going with additional performance parts. If a guy did the same changes I made to the 1406, and also swapped in an aftermarket intake and headers, this setting I put the Carb at (which is the stock 1405 tuning) is a great place to start.

@@AndyKruseChannel Would you be able to share the numbers on the jets you took out? That might tell me if mine are the economy or non-economy version. I get such horrible gas mileage I’d hate to find out I had the economy tune. An O2 sensor is in my future.

@@swooshdave There are charts out there (called the calibration reference chart) that show the tuning for each Carb, with the center being the stock Jet and Rod sizes. If you look up the 1406 chart, you'll see the Main Jets are 0.098" and the Metering Rod is 0.075" x 0.047". What I did was change those out for the stock sizes of the 1405 which is 0.100" for the Main Jets and 0.070" x 0.047" for the Metering Rods. Now that my Carb is sitting at the factory tune for the 1405, I will continue to use the 1405 chart as I work my through the tuning process. Other than the electronic choke and the factory sized Jets and Rods, the 1405 and 1406 are identical Carbs. This is how I can safely and reliably use the 1405 tuning chart and I move forward.
