You are very correct and a good observer. I actually noted that mistake in my description in hopes others don't make that same mistake.

On the early timing covers that don’t have locating dowels it’s a good idea to install the harmonic balancer before torquing any bolts so that the front seal gets centered around the crankshaft.

Just to add to this - the Fel-Pro gasket set TCS 45008 (referenced in the links above) has 2 water pump gaskets included, but for my engine only 1 was correct, which was for the water pump to timing cover application (as shown at 7:50). The other gasket did not work for the water pump backing plate to water pump application - it covered up 2 bolt holes. I called Fel-Pro support and they didn't have much to say about why, but they provided me part number 35019, which is in fact the correct gasket. So in summary, the gasket shown at 7:50 is one of those included in 45008, but I had to purchase an additional gasket, 35019, for the application between the water pump backing plate and the water pump (not shown in the video). I hope this helps someone! Also, thanks so much for this video, it was VERY helpful!

Thank you very much for the info. In fel-pro's defense, Ford did a lot of weird mid year suttle changes to many of their parts throughout the years so who knows right?

It's best to soak the chain in engine oil to get the bubbles out. Oil does get slung up onto the chain, that is why the oil slinger in front of the drive gear is called a slinger.

Thanks for the tip on the crankshaft seal, I saw people saying another type that drives in the front was better but now it seams to me that is a late model deal, and these early blocks need that seal coming from the rear.
@AlfsMustangGarage3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir that's exactly what you've probably seen. Ford changed these timing cover designs over the years a lot and one of those changes is the front seal. Thanks for commenting and subscribing!

Before torquing the bolts to the timing cover install the damper temporally! The damper is the only thing centering the cover correctly.....Newer 302/5.0 has centering dowel pins but these old 289 does not and using the damper as centering tool is important

Quick question. I have a 1971 302 with a 1965 289 timing cover (C40E-6059-A)and am needing to replace the bolts. I understand the bolts are different lengths but is the thread pitch of all of them the same? I'm trying to make my gramps proud that I got the truck he gave me going again. Thanks!
@AlfsMustangGarage4 жыл бұрын
To be 100% honest, I'm not sure if the thread pitches are the same. Ford did a lot of weird and random changes to things throughout the years. If you have the bolts, test fit them into the block before you install the cover. Always play it safe when you're unsure. Good luck, let me know how it goes.
@JohnLatrobe3 жыл бұрын
The bolts should all be the same thread 5/16” x 18.

Do you recommend using the crankshaft oil seal that installs from the front of the housing. Do you have a number for this seal 65 289. Love you're videos

Do you coat the bolts with anything? What are you using on the waterpump gaskets?
@AlfsMustangGarage5 жыл бұрын
I do not coat the bolts with anything. I make sure they are clean and I also clean out the bolt threads on the block. As far as on the gaskets, I use Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker silicone. I also have used "The Right Stuff" which is also made by Permatex.

I’m sorry elf I’m not very good with the communication with these phones, but I think I finally got a way to send you photos of my water pump which I keep on getting the water gaskets wrong. I was hoping I can show you a picture and maybe you could tell me what kind of water pump I have.

I'm assembling a '63 289 and am finding impossible clearance between the timing cover to pan bolts when the cover to block bolts are installed and vice versa. Do you have any insight on this issue?
@AlfsMustangGarage4 жыл бұрын
Just so we are on the same page, the bolt holes for the front of the oil pan do not align to the bottom of the timing cover?
@bradleyerickson70814 жыл бұрын
@@AlfsMustangGarage Everything lines up fine but if two of the bolts that go to the block are installed then the bolts to the pan don't have clearance. If the two pan bolts are in the block bolts don't clear. I really appreciate you
@AlfsMustangGarage4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I guess I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly you mean by not having clearance. Are the timing cover, pan, and bolts all original?

Is that amazon link for the gasket set accurate. I remember you said you had the wrong one in the video, but is the link correct?
@AlfsMustangGarage3 жыл бұрын
Ya in the video I actually swapped the two water pump gaskets. However, for the fel-pro gasket set, I had someone comment not too long ago talking about an issue with their set. It will state its correct but one of the water pump gaskets actually doesn't work and you have to buy an additional gasket. This is what he said "Just to add to this - the Fel-Pro gasket set TCS 45008 (referenced in the links above) has 2 water pump gaskets included, but for my engine only 1 was correct, which was for the water pump to timing cover application (as shown at 7:50). @@AlfsMustangGarage thanks for the detailed reply. I’m literally gonna be reading this as I’m putting the new gaskets on, finger crossed. Also…did you use the same permetex ultra black for both the cover and pump?
@AlfsMustangGarage3 жыл бұрын
So I used to use the ultra black on everything. But now I'm using the ultra black on the timing cover only (or whatever to seal oil. The water pump and the water jackets for the timing cover gasket I'm putting on Permatex water pump gasket maker amzn.to/34SN1vn I hope that helps out. So essentially the timing cover gasket is getting both ultra black and the water pump silicone.
