Thanks for updating this tutorial from the one done a few years ago. With your help, I just replaced my water pump and radiator on my 66 mustang convertible. Job went great!

2:21 I'm maybe too picky, but, in case, instead of living that part of the cover floating free, I put a piece of 2x4 underneath to prevent a crack in the aluminum cover.

My Edelbrock Victor Jr. water pump didn't have a separate plate. Was already bolted to the pump. Great helpful videos! Thanks!

Oh awesome very cool! Good luck with your build. I would recommend buying the book that I am referencing in these videos. The videos will only take you so far but everything you need to know will be in the book. The link is in the description.

Only thing I like more on old Chevy V8 engines is the timing cover being a separate unit. I'm a Ford guy 100% but these SBF water pump/timing cover multiple gaskets and lining them all up before the sealer begins to set is a real nightmare especially with the engine in the car. Just recently removed my noisy gear drive and replaced with a timing chain. Got it done and nothing leaks which is miracle in itself because I must have fiddled with everything lining up for what seemed like an hour plus. Really nice to see this done methodically and the right way. Next time I will order a new bolt set and actually think it through like this. Thanks!

I couldn't agree more. Its one of those things that I wish Ford were more like GM but I guess we have to have some things to challenge us. To make things worse, Ford had to change their designs multiple times though out the years of these small block Windsors where the GM 350 remained unchanged for decades lol. I appreciate the comment, I've definitely learned my lesson on these jobs over the years to have everything ready before beginning. Nothing more frustrating than doing this job and having to go back in to do it again.

IMO its best to seat your harmonic balancer before you tighten any of the water pump bolts .
@seminolekilla
@seminolekilla 8 ай бұрын
I was thinking this as well. Saw it in another video and I think that would help straighten everything out better so the seal on the balancer is as concentric as possible.

This is the bolt kit we bought for the water pump www.npdlink.com/search/products?search_terms=water%2Bpump%2Bbolt%2Bkit&top_parent=200001&year=1966 The timing cover was just a factory replacement for a 289 but it was what came off the engine. The water pump was an edelbrock high flow. www.cjponyparts.com/edelbrock-water-pump-hi-flow-289-302-351w/p/WP11-V/?msclkid=3e6c8e9edf9c14bfb87fea284e0e47f2&Bing%20Dynamic%20Search&Fp%2F&Dynamic%20Search%20Ads

Whats with the huge hole next to the water inlet that the cover didnt cover, but gasket does?
@AlanSchildroth
@AlanSchildroth Жыл бұрын
Being aluminum I would guess brings a different torque spec! What did the Edelbrock say to torque it at?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
Indeed it does. I have no idea, I never even looked into it. I know sometimes its taboo to just go off feel but in all reality, its not a cylinder head. If you're in tune and paying attention, this kind of stuff I will typically put the torque wrench on and just feel.

I have a 289 engine with a stuck distributor and intake manifold. Have done all kinds of prying and hitting with hammer no results. Any other suggestions that I might try?
@AlfsMustangGarage

I've yet to encounter such a problem. Is the engine being rebuilt or are you simply trying to remove the distributor?

So, I have a 289. (Just like yours in this video). Purrs like a kitten. Hit the fas pedal, and smoke comes out of the oil breather. I'm going to guess head gasket. Or rings. It sat since 1997. So, just need drove? Or rebuilt?
@AlfsMustangGarage
@AlfsMustangGarage Жыл бұрын
Well there should be some sort of crankcase pressure so a little is normal. Is your PCV valve clogged up or anything? If its excessive it could be a number of things so its hard to say from a keyboard if you need an engine overhaul or not.

@@AlfsMustangGarage all new pcv valve and hose. Smoke is not excessive. Just barely noticeable. So maybe it's normal. Never paid attention when the hood is closed. Lol

@@AlfsMustangGarage if I hold the pump in my hand and try to spin it and wait for it to stop, that doesn’t happen. I can turn the pump by hand easily. I’m sure it’s fine and would function properly on the 289. Thanks for the reply. Love your channel. Declan, Ireland.
