How to: Install Touratech Upper Crash Bar Extensions (BMW R1200GS Adventure LC TE) - Tutorial

Hi! In this video I’ll show you how to install Touratech’s stainless steel crash bar extensions on my BMW R1200GS Adventure LC. They will protect the upper part of the engine and tank area.

Nice. Though I hate it when things require several different sizes for the fasteners. Some make sense, the 6mm for the upper bolt is fine it needs to be big and beefy. But the 4mm then 3mm, then the Torx head for the body attachment gets annoying. Just stick with the minimum number of different heads and sizes!

Hey, thank you very much for your video. I'm planning to buy the extension to fit additional small bags on the sides, your video is really informative. A quesiton: Does it involves additional work when doing oil change/spark replacement? Does the extensions have to be also removed to perform this or other maintenance job? Cheers from Mexico!

How about mounting the 'bung' first? (synthetic grease on O rings) Not entirely convinced by all this extra scaffolding but hell, it makes the whole plot look like it make a car driver think twice about arguing with you ;-)

Phil McCracken My knees don't come close when I'm seated on the GS. Adequate clearance and I'm nearly 6ft tall..

Nice job on your instructions, They look great! They could have done better on the brackets to fix the tube together, very ugly hardware. I would 3d print black dress plate to that hardware to cover them. QUESTION; The part of the bar, back of the bmw logo looks like a grate hand grip to pick the bike up if you drop it. Is that what it's designed for, is it strong enough to lift the bike up?

Voxel Lab Hi, great question and idea. I personally would still use my handlebars in a locked position but I have tried to lean the bike over onto one side to try out and the new frame moves only ever so slightly, but with the bike weighing so heavy and it's not even laden with kit yet I'd still like to use my handlebars.

With all these extras you've installed from the beginning your bike is probably 30kg heavier. Do you feel any difference while riding?

Robert B . Hi, yes great question. A lot is spread throughout the bike and because of the position of my bars, levers and my personal setup of the bike to suit me I don't notice it. I do a lot of road miles as well as off road and even when your up on the pegs the bike has a great balance through some technical stages.

you will find you're better of buying and fitting the lower crash bar strengthening kit . save your money on the top section as it will never touch the ground unless the bike cart wheels . no bars will save it from damage if that happens .

Henry Higgins Hi buddy, yes it’s personal choice. I couldn’t fit both at the same time but I like the top bars. I also used them to fit pouches for extra kit. Cheers. Safe riding

extension of an extension...how does this even work in crash? doesn't it bend right into the tank?

Tomáš Prítrský , Hi! Yes I thought that two but when fitted they are about 2" from the tank which could take a real hard fall or high impact still saving damage to the tank.

I have a question: are the oem crash bars so terrible that you need to replace them?

elissah Hi! The bike doesn’t come with these crash bars on it so you can fit these aftermarket ones if you want

elissah I’ve never had an issue with them. You can get a strengthening bar for them but you can’t fit both the upper tank bars and the extra lower strengthening bars at the same time. Both from Touratech

@@RichyParton I know and can't figure out why they would not make them compatible! Because the lower bars are what you really need and I had them on my bike for 100,000 miles and I crashed many times off road and nothing happened to the engine. I am not even using valve covers because these lower bars are so strong and pretty much all you need, really. But, I needed more "luggage space up front" and these bars were the only solution! This way I could attach SW-Motech Dry Bags 80 which I absolutely use 100% of the time! Cheers
