You can also cut stages for your pieces. For example your 10, 8, 6, and 4 all at the same time and so forth instead of measuring every single piece. I'm sure you knew that already. Keep up the good work!

i really appreciate all of your videos. they have so much information in them. i'm getting ready to start the vinyl siding on the garage and had a couple of questions. do you use a metal starter strip on the front of the garage above the driveway? how to you have the one inch overlap? Also would you put a metal drip cap over the garage door brick molding before installing a j channel?

We cut all the starters at once and all the finishers at once. Easy if you know your offset no reason to measure your finishers except for the first and we cut 32 inches apart per code to land on studs. I know it doesn't workout on 12-6 panels but that's code with a house wrap inspection. But we mostly do lp nowadays. I new all your finishers before you measured them after the first one.

Enjoyed your video. I have one question. Can you put vinyl siding over existing wood siding or do you have to strip the old siding? I’m looking into to put on vinyl siding on our farm house.
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 2 жыл бұрын
You can go over it. I assume if it's an old farmhouse the existing siding has like a 2 inch lap. It might be worth it to put fanfold over it to create a more even surface, or even put vertical nailing boards. But yes, you should be able to go right over it. That's the beauty of vinyl, you can float it. I just recommend you get a good solid siding panel with a .044 thickness
@nicholasittzes7224
@nicholasittzes7224 Жыл бұрын
Also, please install correct flashing and trim per manufacturers spec. Don't assume that the old siding underneath will continue to shed water. I've seen an installation done poorly over 4x8 foot panel siding that now leaks around every window. I'm guessing that the installer banked on the old siding, and it worked for about 15 years. But eventually, the caulk gave way, and everywhere there's a window needs to be torn apart and reframed.

I am siding my garage. Imagine the left side of your building (with the corner post on) is the right side of my garage door. T111 is what is currently on the garage, my question is , How would you finish or wrap the jam of the garage door (overhead door)? The T 111 edge and the foam board for the siding is showing if I just add the J channel around the door opening. There is no brick mold or trim currently. In other words, If you were to look down the wall standing at the door opening you will see the edge or side of the T 111 and the foam board for the vinyl Even if I add brick mold and put the J beside the brick mold, the edge of the T 111 can still be seen, What is the right way to fix this?
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction Жыл бұрын
thats a tough one. sounds to me like you have to remove all the wood around the opening of the garage door. depending on the garage, there is usually a 2x6 around the perimeter of the garage door where your opener number pad would be mounted. remove all that wood and maybe put a 2x8 if the 2x6 isnt enough. flush with the 2x4 framing on the inside of the garage, and it will stick out enough for your j channel to butt right against it. wrap in aluminum when complete

No need to measure, just flip the panel mark and cut. The only time I would pull the tape would be the last course for cut down. A wall like that, I would mark the studs for nailing.
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 3 жыл бұрын
I end up doing that a lil later. That wall has a ton of meat still so we don't usually bother marking studs when we go over t-111 or cedar line this. But on plywood we do

Inches. But not all walls use the same stagger. 30 and 36 show up most often successfully. Then 24 and 20. Those are the 4 easiest numbers to stagger mathematically. I have a formula you can use to determine if a stair step will work with the length of your wall

Eh, I do all my videos on site and most people prefer it. I do it because the things I teach aren't very diy friendly. Too many details to get good quality if you're new to it so i never recommend homeowners doing this type of thing alone. and I try to detail everything well enough that anybody competent enough to do the work will have their questions answered and see a good efficient way of getting it done. And I don't mean that as a knock to anybody at all, I only say that because often times I make things look easy or even fun, and the last thing I want is somebody caught in a bind, wasting time and materials because I made it look easy for them to attack on their own.
