From what I've seen. I pulled it up online and the list shows them all with 1 pump. There is one with a remote reservoir and one attached, so there are 2.

@Lsxmatt, I know it's probably too late for this project, but early (up to 2013?) Mazda 3s and Mazda 5s have an electric p/s pump that looks very similar to that Volvo pump. The high pressure line is connected with a banjo bolt instead of a straight in fitting like the Volvo unit. Long time lurker, love the TA stuff, got an 89 GTA myself.

Congrats on 100k subs. Thanks for the video upload. You're quite fortunate that despite breaking your pump, these power steering pumps are relatively simple devices. On my car, a 1988 BMW 750iL, it uses a dual vane pump that drives not only the steering, but also the power brakes and the rear self-leveling suspension (which I will be deleting soon). On my car, this engine-driven hydraulic pump going bad costs an eye-watering $2,127.10 to replace. While unfortunate, that would be a strong financial motivation to at least experiment with going with an electric power steering conversion.

Paid 60$ for my pump. I’ve done this in my own dd turbo ls swap. I put mine in the trunk. I did one on a drift car and put it behind the seat. I have also put one beside the rad under the headlight. If you just run the one wire setup I think the system defaults to 75-80% for one setup the customer bought a module to control the % assist and turned it to the max and blew the end rack seals when it was full lock really hard. So a little research and maths would pay off 80% of the Volvo pump was about 90% of the Nissan rack or something. I ride with 80% on my Mazda rx8 rack

I've got a soft spot for TransAms after my Mom, she enjoyed KITT so much back in the day. She's no longer with us, but every time I see one of them, no matter which year it is, it sure brings back great memories of her. Bet your TransAm will be a hell of a ride when it's complete, which looks like it's happening soon. Love all the attention to details, the custom fab work and all the things you've done so far to your TransAm. Can't wait to see what's coming for it, and your other cool cars too! I know you're a Chevy guy, but wanted to share this anyways. My brother-in-law abandoned a 2000s Expedition with that stupid head crack, spark plug and synchros issues, and an almost blown transmission. I'm thinking on getting a crashed 1st gen Ford Raptor and do something crazy as the body and chassis of the Expy are still great. I'm more of a pre-EcoBurst Ford guy btw, but I love how people are fighting to keep the ICEs alive.

So, stupid question, what's the draw of the electric vs the hydraulic pumps?
@piotrmalewski8178 Жыл бұрын
Not a fan of electrical power steering, I like to feel what front wheels are doing. Still, I'm impressed by how profesionally and cleanly you build this car. It would take me years just to figure out how to connect the cables.
@shujii_s Жыл бұрын
I have an 08 Volvo C30 with that pump, and it only runs when turning the wheels. I also believe it provides less assist at speed. Are you replicating that functionally, or planning to just run it continuously? I was wondering because I thought it was a neat little unit for older builds, but wasn't sure about controlling it.
@lsxmatt Жыл бұрын
Planning on running it continuously. If I don’t like the feel there’s an aftermarket controller that lets you vary the assistance.
@bleepingfastmotorsports Жыл бұрын
What was your inspiration or goal with the e-power steering? The electric power steering thing has always intrigued me. Nice video on the mod. My only question is on your pressure line. Why not just use an AN adapter fittings on each end (pump side and box side) and then ptfe line between? Less points of failure (fitting joints), flexible and a slightly cleaner install. Nice work, I have to check out some of your other content now.
@lsxmatt Жыл бұрын
Main reason was cost. I already had the steel tubing and tube nuts. For the electric power steering itself I decided to go with it for space savings around the engine. A belt driven pump would stick out and get in the way of future turbo piping.
@bleepingfastmotorsports Жыл бұрын
@@lsxmatt ok, that makes sense. Turbos definitely require some real estate for the piping.
