helpful tips on how to take off and install new water pump on mercedes with m104 engines
using my 1995 e320 !
bad water pump symptoms include:
1..slight or major overheating constantly ( not staying at the 80-81 c mark on the temp gauge)
*if outside temp is above 90, your front fans should start and cool the engine back down
2..Some coolant leakage around the pump (slight or heavy)
3..having to refill coolant reservoir daily or weekly
4..changing the thermostat doesn't help maintain or reduce engine temp
Tip*
for best cooling system performance , also replace your
1..Radiator ( most overlooked item .definanly replace if it's 5 or more years old )
2..hoses
3.. thermostat

Well if you have the money.. a good refresh of the cooling system helps.. I Put in a new water pump ( most important) , new radiator, thermostat and fan clutch .. then new auxiliary fans but those only come on to aid with cooling for a short time. Each part does its job to maintain the temp. If it’s getting hot then one or more of those parts are failing.. strangely mercedes benz parts die slowly and silently. So it fools u into thinking everything is okay ,but it’s really not. Lol 🫣

excellent video - as the man says, inspirational! Mine is a 95 e320 convertible with a shot water pump - been sitting in the garage stateside for almost 2 years while I was stuck overseas due to damned virus travel issues.. Now that I've seen your vid, I'm all fired up to get at this next month and get her back on the road! I will DEFINITELY get one of those Walmart compressed air wrenches with the 10" extension - thanks for the tip and will also look on ebay for the WP itself. Pelican has MB orig at $400+ :-D and two others at about $160-180. Sure like the sound of $42 a lot better!!, and with the $ I save, I will also replace the radiator and the thermostat as you suggest - good idea!! Thanks again!!

glad I could help you.. yeah this project wasn't difficult to do.. just make sure to double check all the clamps and hoses for leaks once you installed your new parts ..mine leaked 2 days later so had to retighten things once more for a snug fit..

Great video! I came looking to see how tough changing the water pump would be and from your video I can see that with a little patience, right tools and right replacement parts (ahem) this is not a tough job. One thing I would add is that anyone having some cooling problems check the viscous fan clutch as well. Spin it a bit by hand and there should be some resistance but if the fan spins freely then it is an indication that it needs changing. I chased the cooling issue around a bit changing about everything I could and the last thing to change was that fan clutch. It seemed to be OK at the time, or so I thought but when I changed it out the cooling situation corrected itself on my engine. I believe that the fan was not pulling sufficient air through the rad because the fan clutch was pooched, in my case the oil had leaked out. Should mention I have the M104 engine as well. Again good on you for postingthe video.

thanks for your post. yes its a fun weekend job to do. and like in my other video about the fan clutch, it dies silently and quietly, to where drivers don’t notice it anymore . the fan clutch should be roaring loudly especially on hot days. a good working fan clutch, water pump, auxiliary Fans in the front , new radiator , thermostat, all make the car temperature stay in range.. 👍

Love the vibes you're giving off man. Inspirational. Between the Pelican Parts write-up and this video I think I can replace the water pump on my own. Did you lift the car to do it or no? Thanks again.

Nice video. My M104 has 6mm bolts holding on the WP. One looks really hard to get to b/c of the tensioner adjuster in the way. Mines running hot in traffic with a new radiator so I think it’s time.

Beezersh .. well not sure what year ur Mercedes is and the country you’re in ,but ill say with the USA m104 engine.. that tensioner pully is super easy to move .. mine was a 17 mm socket placed on the tensioner and just pull upwards and it then it allows you to remove the belt ..takes about 10 seconds.. if u do decide to do it.. try not to take the whole thing off ...its alil confusing and takes about 20 minutes to put back on!!!😬

Thanks man. USA 93’ 2.8L. Yeah I replaced the whole tensioner this summer so familiar with that. Also looks like swinging the PS pump out of the way helps. Thx again
