Awesome video! As someone that lives in subtropical Australia and has an M104 powered W140, these are a must. I actually used a high flow version of a thermostat for a W123 300D, apparently the diesel ones work really well to keep the temps down as they run much hotter. Giving the transmission a dedicated oil cooler will drop coolant temps during long hill climbs with low revs too. The oil gets heated up really good while being slushed around in the torque converte since there is no lock up clutch. This heat then gets dumped into the cooling system.

Hello, this is a very interesting and informative video. Please allow me to ask two questions, as my knowledge of physics is unfortunately limited: if I have understood correctly, the resistor "tricks" the thermal switch or the control unit into thinking that the original switching point of 107 (?) degrees Celsius has already been reached and thus switches on the auxiliary fans, which would then be switched on at level 2. Is this correct as far as it goes? I found a few videos on KZbin in which users do this, but they all use different resistors. One uses a 1 K Ohm resistor, another uses a 1.5 K Ohm resistor and you have chosen a 1.8 K Ohm resistor. How do you calculate the influence quantity? Is there a formula here? Is it correct to assume that, for example, the 1 K ohm resistor switches on at 92 degrees, the 1.5 K ohm resistor at 95 degrees and the 1.8 K ohm resistor at 98 degrees Celsius? (The temperature values are only invented examples!) ? If I have understood this correctly and stage 2 is then switched at the "107 degrees", is there a possibility of only switching stage 1 or is this only possible by tapping into the pressure switch of the air conditioning system? The second question is as follows: in the German edition of the WIS it is written that at least at LH (I don't know if also at KE and ME) when reaching 107 degrees Celsius and thus switching on the two electric fans, the performance of the air conditioning is throttled in order to minimise the thermal load a little. So, if my understanding is correct and a resistor commands the control unit to reach 107 degrees Celsius and thus "switch", would the air conditioning then also be throttled? And if so, did you notice this in your test or is it negligible? Thanks in advance for your answer and greetings from Germany, home of your cars. :-) Greetings, Heiko
@SoCal2102 жыл бұрын
Hi 1. I used a 1.0K ohm resistor on my car. I was told a 1.2K ohm resistor would activate the fans at 100C and tried that first. With that knowledge I wanted to lower it. The 1.0K turns on the fans at approximately 95-98C. 2. The resistor does not command the control unit to reach 107 early. The AC still operates like the factory designed. Even with temperature at 105C my AC is still able to work. There is a specific switch and sensor just for the Auxiliary fans that do not affect anything else and a separate switch for the ECU(my car being HFM). Something else that occurs is that the low speed fans will activate sooner as well. Normal operation is that outside temp must be 80F or above to work. This will work at lower outside temps when AC is activated. All the resistor does is allows the fans to activate at a lower temperature to bring the temperature down sooner. Engine still operates like it is designed. If you do the thermostat and the fan clutch as well the main benefit you will see is timing no longer being retarded under most instances. AC will not cut off because the car will never reach that high of temperature. Warm up cycle is minimally impacted to were most people will never notice a difference. There are only benefits to doing these modifications if your car is constantly running over 100C.

I'm going this route but because the 300E i6 is, well, an inline 6, the effective space between the radiator and the engine is only 8.5 cm (3.33") I'm having so much trouble finding a slim enough fan to fit. Here in Saudi Arabia it gets to ~48C (could exceed 120F in a good day). Would you kindly link me, or just give the model no., to the exact same fans you installed? Ambient temps in the mid 70s while driving, resistor on cts mod, 70-something degree thermostat, with new visco-fan....I'd say the engine temp at 100 even when going up hill and ac on is mediocre at best. I bet you can get those temps down a lot lower. I wonder if you redid your test with everything except the fan clutch, and made a custom shroud around your aux fans, if your temps would be a lot lower. I used heavy duty black felt fabric as a shroud and it works great at funneling air. I get about 90 degrees engine temp with ambient outside temp at 105+ degrees with ac on and no fan clutch, just modded dual aux fans turning on at 92 degrees with the stock 87 degree thermostat. I'm in Socal....desert area.

Please explain the resistor again on the fan switch? I have a 16 valve 190e and getting the fans to kick in earlier would be great in the summer heat. My car does not have that type of fan clutch. It has a magnetic fan clutch.
@SoCal2104 ай бұрын
The resistor allows for the electric fans to kick on sooner by tapping into the coolant temperate sensor, this sensor on m104 and m103 is only for the electric fans. I believe this is also possible on a 16v as well if it has electric fans which I believe cars with ac do. There is likely a separate sensor for the magnetic fan clutch since it’s also temperature based. If it uses the same 2 pin design as the m104s sensor then a resistor can be added as well to make it engage sooner.

I would highly recommend doing the thermostat as well. It’s what allows the cooling system to be able to get cool. My friend did just the thermostat on his 1995 E320 wagon and it helped tremendously. The resistor would allow for the electric fans to kick on sooner when you are sitting still. The fan clutch helps when the engine is revving up. Does AC still work when ECU turn's on the el fans for cooling the engine down? I use to have a switch in a cabin in my 3000E M103 to turn on the el fans but when I did that the AC would work cause ECU would think that the engine is overheating so it shuts the AC down.
@SoCal2103 жыл бұрын
The AC will still work normally. The AC is designed to be cut off at 107C from the factory. The AC will trigger the fans to be on low speed if ambient temperature is 80F or higher. With the 1000ohm resistor the fans turn on at around 95C and should never get to 107C so the AC will stay on. If it does get 107C or higher the AC will turn off.

@@SoCal210 Yeah, I didn't have the resistor, I just wired the switch to the M103 thermo switch so the ECU must have tought that the engine is overheating and it switched off the AC every time I turned AUX fans on

What does the resistor do?
@SoCal2103 жыл бұрын
The resistor will make the auxiliary fans turn on at a lower temp. The factory specification is 107. A 1000 ohm resistor will make it come on at 95 instead. 1200 ohm at about 100

Cool mods enjoy your channel, just wondering where did you buy the fan clutch and how much? # 2100 006 243 , after researching this part its a tropical fan clutch ,for really hot climates, I'm in Temecula CA and it gets very hot here during summer months, its for our 1992 M103 , thanks!

I was able to find an OEM one on eBay. They still sell them new at the dealer. You can find them from any online parts seller if you search for a fan clutch for a 1995-1997 C36 AMG.

@@SoCal210 Just checked eBay, Sachs part number: 2100 006 243 comes up but sold out, been searching the net ,lots of C36 Fan Clutch: 104-200-01-22 , but they don't list manufacture part number 2100 006 243, when I find that combination will buy, lots of them 2100 006 243 over in Europe. So found tons of the SACHS in the UK , Germany, but they can't ship to the USA due to Covid-19, I can modify mine by bending the Bi-metallic strip, that will lock the fan at lower set point, until I can find a SACHS. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3rUdnx4mrFriNk

You should try electric cooling fan. And let us know if it works, and how to do it if it does work

I did convert mine on electric fans 2x12in,with AC on driving in 110-115deg at 80-9mph temp below 100,id say 98-99,if i let slower lets say 70-75mph temp drops to around 95deg.Also fans are setup to kick in at 88-90deg .The most beautiful part is that engine runs way lighter without that fan clutch engaged.

@@mihu202 I just hooked up a spal brushless aftermarket 15" inside the OE shroud. Put the temp sensor in the water pump. Kicks on slowly at 87c ramps up and goes full speed at 101c and when the AC is on. 79c thermostat. It came out perfect. Temp Guage stays right in the middle. Youre right, waaay better than a fun clutch.

As I’m typing this I’m at the innout drive thru line and I just remembered that when my temp is in the middle of 100 and 120 mark, my fans turn on and bring the temp down to 100.

Remember under emergency running mode that you ac compressor will disengage and your ignition will be set back to take off some of the stress for the engine. Cooling upgrades are great if you k ow what your doing. But having the AC compressor turning off all the time due to your resistor mood are not the way to fmdo it in my opinion.
@SoCal2102 жыл бұрын
The ac compressor does NOT turn off with the resistor. The resistors will make the fans turn on at a lower temp regardless of ac. This does not affect the timing unless the engine coolant temperature reach 95C+. At 95C that is when the timing will begin to retard. My ac compressor does not disengage unless it gets to 107C which is when it is designed to disengage. There are only positives to doing these cooling upgrades.
