Just wanted to say thanks - this worked for my Asus X99-S and Windows 10 first time around. One adjustment I had to make was that the 10 installer did not prompt me to remove the USB stick prior to the first restart. My solution was to leave the USB drive in for the whole process. ... It's not that complicated? I mean, this tutorial covers it pretty well, and even when you don't have an ASUS BIOS, you should be able to use the same method of installation. Really, if you're able to build a PC, and have a bit of basic knowledge on how to install an OS normally, this shouldn't be too hard to pull off. ;)

It can be complicated, I just built my system and my windows does not detect the M.2 upon install. The M.2's are configured in Raid through the BIOS and UEFI is listed as first priority, but when I attempt to boot from the flash drive I get all the way through the windows installation process to the point where you should see the option for a boot drive, but there is no boot drive in the list. Windows says that there is no drive found, so I downloaded the latest bios from ASUS and the latest driver from Samasung for the drives on another second flash drive still no luck. When Windows gives me the option to browse for the drivers needed I open the files visible on the flash drive and see nothing I can use, nor does windows detect anything on the flash drive either. I have switched USB ports several times also. I'm about to rip the HDD from my old PC and install it into the new rig long enough to get the system up, because nothing I do seems to work.

Another small caveat to this install. 1) Make sure your X99-Deluxe has the latest BIOS release (1702) and 2) Make sure all all HDDs you may have are "unplugged" from the mobo. I had a previous install of Windows 8.1 on my 2.5" SSD raid 0 and even though I selected the new install to be on the SM951, it put some of the windows boot/recovery partitions on my 2.5" SSD raid (not sure exactly why it did this). Because of this, when I was ready to wipe my SSD raid and re-purpose it for game file storage, my SM951 was no longer considered a bootable device. I had to re-install windows from my USB a second time. The second time around, I completely unplugged all my other HDDs/SSDs and everything went smoothly, even after plugging my raid 1 storage array back in and my 2.5" SSDs, the system boots up without issue every time. Also, yes I followed this very same above procedure (before the video was posted). The only difference was I didn't unplug my other HDDs, you live and you learn!

Then I shutdown a reconnected my old Sata SSD drive and tried to boot up. I got the "No OS on bootable drive" error. Try as I might, I could not get it to boot off of the new drive. So I set the bios to boot from the SATA drive which was my old boot drive with Windows 10 on it. It booted up normally. I went in to explorer and the new drive shows up there but is "Inaccessable". @TrickMasterPC9 жыл бұрын
+Touacha Her Just for initial installation. Some USB 2.0 and older hardware has xHCI issues and might result in boot failures on xHCI hand-off from the BIOS to the OS. In general you should be good, but if you have any boot-up issues after installation of your M.2 simply try unplugging your various USB devices until you have successful boot.

it's not prompting me to remove the usb at the end of the install, nor does my bios recognize the ssd after the install. it's a NVME ssd as you said in the description it does not appear within the BIOS until windows creates the system partition with the EFI boot sector. but how do i get it to create the EFI boot sector?

To the Windows installation part, I have two drive identified. One is my ssd (which is currently my boot drive that I unplugged and it says MSR reserved) and my m.2 ssd. Also i cant select 'new' for the m.2 ssd. What do I do??

Hi can you please teach me how to install on an asrock z97 extreme6 motherboard? the asrock uefi doesn't have a selection for "other OS" ??
@vtunngle63379 жыл бұрын
Vtunngle Never mind I figured it out, you don't require it, you can access the secure boot in the security tab, i installed my new sm951 in I get complete power off boot up in 8 seconds, I set it to skip the bios and load screens and used ultra fast boot up, it's amazing XD

I wonder how you detected the M.2 ssd from the Windows setup, I simply don't get anything on that screen 1:42 Although it gets detected in bios.

Thank you! For the advice to remove all other sata/ other devices, as well as turning secure boot off durring install. Worked perfect with your tips!

Thank you for this video. Upon the first reboot, if you keep the USB stick in the PC while going back into the BIOS to make the final changes will that affect anything? Or does it not matter as long as it is removed before Windows starts again to finish the install?

Ok so I have a Question. The Laptop I'm going to buy already have M.2 SSD installed on it but it uses NVMe slot. Meanwhile the Laptop's Motherboard have extra M.2 slot but it can only be used for SSD (don't have NVMe capability). If I move the SSD that came from factory from NVMe slot to M.2 non-NVMe slot, can I install Windows in that SSD? Because I'm planning to use the M.2 NVMe slot for eGPU docking.

Thanks for a video!. I just have built my first pc. I have Asrock x99 extreme4 3.1 motherboard and I installed test version of windows 10 on the sm951 by disabling CSM. Everything works fine. Should I change CSM back or just leave it disable?
@TrickMasterPC9 жыл бұрын
Leave it disabled for optimal performance

I get a notification when I disable Launch CSM that says something about secure boot regulations. What does this mean?

Secure boot is an option you can use, by default it is disabled. Here's an overview of secure boot technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824987.aspx

they have said that the actual hardware of the sm951 drives of the ahci and nvme, is identical. so my question is, if you have an ahci version, can you load drivers for the nvme version to upgrade???

For a better performance, Do you recomend to instal the M2 OS drive in the M2 slot or in the PCIe with the adapter? I have a Asus X99 DELUXE ii and a Samsung 960 pro M2 512GB. I work on cubase 9 working on big orchestral templates. Thanks in advance.
@TrickMasterPC8 жыл бұрын
ivan vivas in the M.2 all the way. It's nano seconds faster, but it frees up PCIe lanes typically reserved for 2 way or 3 way SLI.

Thanks

I just read that when plug it straight into the M2 slot you may get the PCIe 3.0 going to PCIe 2.0. Is that true?

I would really appreciate any advice, i've gone throw all the steps but after i did the restart and changed os type to uefi mode and installed the key management the pc does not continue the installation. It gives a pop up saying "The current BiOS setting do not fully support the boot device click on OK to enter the bios settings go to advanced boot, CSM and adjust the CSM settings to enable the boot device" I even trued to clone the old drive but it failed to recognize the m2 as a boot device.

I gave up on that. It turned out that older AMD platform are not supported neither they are compatible with M.2 slot as a bootable device. I have an Fx 9590 on an Asus M5A99FX Pro board. I would love to hear any success story if anybody found any luck running those bad boys on an AMD platform
@4eks1sLV7 жыл бұрын
yeah good luck with that. Comment above was destroyed by my phones autocorrect thing... Managed to get it working by changing random bios settings until it worked. Past AMD and new stuff never go together lol

Yeah, I've done it so many times on Intel and never had a problem but when it comes to your own PC there is always a problem :) what kind of setup do you have?
On my 950 pro I get to where do you want to install windows? Selecting the 950 it says "windows cannot be installled to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks". Any suggestions?
@TrickMasterPC8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to use diskpart to clean the M.2 drive. Here's a step by step www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52129-disk-clean-clean-all-diskpart-command.html
@TrickMasterPC8 жыл бұрын
some times for some reason people have reported that their M.2 was pre-formatted when they received it. This is your problem. Normally, the drives come raw, unformatted.
