Another outstanding, straightforward, no bs video that's chock full of common sense and insight. We can't thank you enough for your efforts to teach us to be independent informed painters. Being able to hear the content without the distraction of background music is greatly appreciated. The full version of the newly released foundations course is probably the best tutorial available for folks just starting out. The difference between that course and all the others is that the students get to learn content that can be applied in multiple situations and is not just 'do this, then this, then this, etc'; it's not just a case of copying what the instructor did; there are good explanations as to why things need to be done. The man really does know how to teach!

When ever I hit a wall creatively I spend some time doing a small 8×10 copy of my favourite van gogh and it works miracles it's like a creative palette cleanse. I trust the choices he made even if it doesn't seem to make sense then at the end I be like aahh so that's why he chose that colour now it makes sense! It's also like a lesson in seeing all over again. Great recommendation!

So awesome of you to post this information. I'm a self taught artist since I was 40. Started with colored pencil to ink to pastel to oil. I was very lucky to have an instructor who took an interest in me. He had a workshop after hours at a high school. You are very clear to understand. I just hit 70 this year and love oil painting but struggle with composition and with where to place the light.

once again, thank you sir. YOU DA MAN. whatever composition you decide, i watch and i learn. when i paint i try to think about things that will look good hanging on the wall. kinda like the movie 'the big lebowski' when he said, "that carpet really tied the room together." needless to say my walls are very colorful.

Thanks for the continued content Chris- really informative and helpful to both watch and listen to you talk about how to improve. Appreciate how you make it easy for people at any skill level to pick up the brush and just start painting. Agree with others and would love to see some videos on composition. I always find it a challenge when starting a painting, depending on the genre of course, to decide whether I actually need to narrow down on a specific focal point vs not having one.

Good tips! I cannot stress the importance of plain air painting, either: even if your plain air pieces end up being crap (which, let's face it: many, if not most, are probably going to be...and that's totally okay!), they are invaluable for learning and improving as a landscape painter. There are too many reasons to list here in a YT comment, but one of the best reasons is that you'll see huge benefits when you do studio paintings from photos. Also, as someone who is also a photographer (non-professional, but am serious about the craft, and am willing to spend the time and effort to get an exceptional photos), for me, there is almost zero overlap between photos I take for painting references and those I take for the photo itself...because elements that make a great photo - like the fleeting moment of a rainbow or the high-resolution detail of a native orchid wildflower or butterfly - just don't translate well to paintings. Nor should they. But, a quick snapshot taken on a walk, hike or backpacking trip that immediately grabbed my attention because it had an amazing abstract design or composition? Those can be gems for studio work. It's also worth pointing out that there are probably very few exceptional painters that did NOT copy other artists' works during their training or apprenticeship; it was not only the norm, it was the expectation. I love Edgar Payne's work, and was lucky enough to find his book, Composition of Outdoor Painting, at my local thrift store for...wait for it: $2! And complete with dust jacket. I'd recommend that book, along with Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, to anyone and everyone who wishes to improve their paintings. Both are classics, and the lessons hold true over time👍🏻.
@Polecat549413 жыл бұрын
Very true and even though taking a perfect photo, once you print it off as a reference it becomes muted and the detail gets lots, Plein air painting can be full of problems as well if you have variable conditions and the light is constantly changing and shadows shifting!

Thanks for another good video. I sometimes wonder about copyright infringement. It's o.k. to study an oil painting by another artist without expressed permission but not o.k. to .... fill in the blank here. If I use a snapshot from a movie or t.v. show because I like the bones and palette of the cinematography, am I contravening copyright laws? What general rule/rules do you follow, Mr. P. Coach? And please stay safe. ♥♥♥

Here's a question. Whenever I want to copy a master painter, I find that my printer doesn't do the colors justice, or the paper is too small. However, most print shops won't reproduce art because they don't know who has the copyright. How do you get good quality reference printouts?
