I love seeing you really embrace what being dutch is all about! It is very clear from a dutch perspective that you are grasping dutch culture very well! I hope other expats can learn from you.

What a nice video for our new Dutchies. The editing of this video is very cool. The time is flying, two years in The Netherlands. Annie M.G. Schmidt is ook een pareltje (Jip en Janneke, Minoes, Otje, Pluk van de Petteflet, Ja Zuster Nee Zuster etc.).

Loved the video. Just a suggestion: Limburgs is not so much a Dutch dialect as a regional language. There are three officially recognised regional languages in the Netherlands: Limburgs, Fries and Nedersaksisch (Low Saxon). And then there are the official recognised non-regional minority languages Sinti-Romanes and Jiddisch, and on the special municipalities Papiamento (Bonaire) and English (Saba and Sint-Eustatius). So basically the Netherlands has 8 languages that are officially recognised.

@chubbymoth5810

This status as language is a bit controversial. The only dialect I've got problems with is that of Groningen. Limburgs is Dutch with a few more German loan words. What is considered Dutch these days is actually the dialect from Holland as all the printers were in this region. These days there's been a shift to Utrecht as the TV stations were there. Frisian is really another language, but close to English and knowing a few odd words will get you to understand what the heck they're saying. I lived in an area were the dialect made it incomprehensible for most Dutch. Mezek/mezuk is not a common Dutch word for mosquito for instance. But that is not a separate language either, The grammar is the same, the expressions are familiar,.. it's just a few words different and a funny way they say a word. Flemish can also be very difficult if it is one of the dialects that stem from isolation. In the old times, people would have slightly different dialects to easily make out the strangers. The village brutes would chase out the intruders who'd be after their women, stuff like that. The Netherland would very exclusive views before loads of migrants came over during the decolonisation period and more social mobility. The first migrants would more often be confronted with a single biscuit with the coffee and the box on the table with plenty more in it. And no second offerings. I'd say the country as a whole has become a lot more open in most regards and the changes have been positive for the most part. I can't imagine a world without toko's, mergez and all the other great additions to our culture any more.
@Hadewijch_
@Hadewijch_ Жыл бұрын
@@chubbymoth5810 standard Dutch is mainly derived from Brabantic Dutch (specifically the Antwerpen region) and later influenced by Hollandic Dutch until it became as it is now. Limburgish developed locally besides Dutch. Limburgs is not Dutch with a few German loan words, but developed on its own path. It’s just that it’s closest related sister language is Dutch.

the editing and pacing has definitely improved! next up, camera work. one of the easiest things you can do, is adjust your exposure until the sky or highlights are no longer super bright or white. then, try to make sure your face has some lighting. you don't need to use lighting tools or rigs, you can use natural light, and artificial lights at night. just face yourself towards the light/sun.

Hi Sam, another great video. One quick question that I have been struggling with is do I learn Dutch before I show up in the Netherlands or not? I grew up with some friends that were learning German in high school and my "een" in Dutch sounds like "ein". I'm asking if immersion helps? I don't want to have to relearn and fix things that I learn wrong. Thanks for the list of other KZbinrs. I watch every one of them! Do comments help you on the KZbin side of things? You always get a like and I'm subscibed.

Thank you, Trent! As for your question, if you have the time, I'd recommend at least learning some of the basics in Dutch. For example, how to introduce yourself, how to order, ask how's your day, etc. Even though you'll get by for the most part with English, people would really appreciate you trying with Dutch. And I feel it puts you to a good start if you're already trying to make Dutch sentences from day 1. And no worries on the list! Which one did you follow already? And yeah, comments help! KZbin likes to see engagement.😃

Immersion certainly helps, you could e.g. listen to Dutch music/songs, maybe you won't understand the meaning but you'll get used to the sound of it and it will help your pronunciation. There are many more Dutch singers, not only André Hazes!

@@exploringtheforeign I have the basics down from visiting last June. I'm a year into Duolingo so I know a lot of words. Pronunciation is what I'm worried about learning wrong. I see you having to figure out a new word on camera sometimes even. The way you're calm about it I think helps a lot. I follow all of the ones you mentioned in addition to Soul to Soul Travels. Dutch Americano is what got me started. She's fantastic and lives where we want to! We loved Utrecht.

Going back to your original question; immersion definitely helps. Being surrounded around the language in your day to day life helps reinforce certain words, sentences, etc. But you can try to create immersion without being in the country; for example putting your phone in Dutch, consuming media in Dutch (with subtitles), doing online classes in Dutch where you speak with a native speaker, etc. And I think what you pointed out about me being calm is an important point as well; basically, don't freak out if you make a mistake or don't remember a word, just keep letting things flow out as best as possible and people will understand you. :) Lastly! I totally misread your original message at the end, I though you said you watched all of the channels except for one, not every single one haha. Nice!

You might not see the bikes 🙂It took four long years, but then you also have something: on 26 January, the largest bicycle parking facility in Amsterdam will be put into use. The 6300 extra underground spaces under the Stationsplein will - hopefully - put an end to the enormous amount of bicycles around Central Station . Followed by one for 4000 .

Somehow the algorithm got me to this; perhaps something is incomplete. Anyway, integrating in 🇳🇱 Is some project; you have my sympathy. Please do yourself a favour and learn the language asap, even if most are fluent you really won’t “get” 🇳🇱 without it. You don’t have to be as fluent as the Queen; but she plays 🇳🇱 like a fiddle (a no-brainer, if ever there was one, with the alternative being middle-management @ Deutsche Bank in NYC). And I’m sure you can too.

In general, Dutch people are about efficiency. We make up all kinds of rules and expect people to follow them because that's efficient. Punctuality is one of the things the Dutch love. Just be on time. Don't waste my time by being too late. Efficiency! Don't drive too fast or too slow! Build a house following strict rules! Are Dutch direct? Hell yeah, we're efficient! We don't have time to figure out what you exactly mean when you say something, just say what you mean!

How to successfully integrate in Dutch culture: 1.Come as young as possible. Before puberty, with parents, that would be ideal. Be adopted by the Dutch family, that also. 2. Come to study enroll in university or HBO, preferably in Dutch language. 3. Have a Dutch partner. Live with Dutch person or people 4. Come to theNetherlands as already famous or as an expert in the field That's about it. I live here 30 years and I observed lot of expats here, and even with few exceptions, these are the real possibilities.

What do you think about the use of "expat" instead of "immigrant"? It has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, considering it seems to be a way for Western immigrants to separate themselves from their negative prejudices against non-Western immigrants in their own country. Of course, having seen your videos, I know you only have the best of intentions; that's why I'm curious about your perspective.
