I'm all ears about mdf. I recently purchased a desktop laser cutter and I'm ready to go to town on cutting mdf or other products to build terrain with. I already have 3D printers, so additional items and greebles can be 3D printed. Given that I love to scratch build terrain, I'm pretty sure that I'm done buying GW terrain kits altogether.

Will, great info! Like your advice (and anyone else with ideas!). Setting up a 4x6 board, half is going to be industrial, have necromunda style other half... maybe secondary processing so lots of pipes and prefab platforms... and TTCombat's Sector 1 Beta complex is perfect. So, don't need it to blend in with GW stuff, but complement it. If I'm simulating prefab plasteel type platforms, any texture ideas to help sell the look? Maybe one of the specialty texture rattle can types?

I have MDF walls bought long before GW made plastic ones ( a UK-made set by Tyr). I was actually 'over-provided', & I have 27 columns, 19 long walls & 20 short (half) walls which allows great layouts, but they are very plain. GW plastics are different dimensions (my MDF walls fit the OG card tiles in the 2017 Necromunda Underhive box, not the later paper or plastic tiles). I was thinking about trying to make my set (which cost me £85) more like the GW one with walkways and steps (but too few walls and columns). Maybe 3D printed parts would be the way to go? Anyway, your video has got me going sir.

You’re lucky. It’s much easier to make the columns and walls wider than to make them thinner and shorter. A load of greebles, card, 3D printed parts and your set will fit perfectly. Imagine if you had to sand them all down to fit! 👍🏼🤪

I was really surprised how low MDF was on the poll. Although the cost has been creeping for a while it's still the cheapest professional terrain option and it's a great base for some kit bashing. I find it odd how people are happy to mod their minis, but then they moan about MDF being plain, as if saws and glue don't exist any more!

Totally! Mdf to me, is a cheap jigsaw puzzle, but where I get to add my own picture. And if I can get that picture to match my existing terrain - then it’s perfect for what I need.

On the topic of detailing mdf, I see that you are experienced with vector software, it occurs to me that printed stickers could dress up the terrain. Not just posters, but vents, rivets, cables, lighting, wall textures. Maybe an idea for a video?

Yes, you’re absolutely correct. But, and this is the weird part. By the time you’ve designed the parts, bought paper and printer ink, cut them out and glued them on. It’s actually cheaper to by greebles on a sprue, glue and paint altogether. I do have a TTCombat sprue that fits your exact description so I may indeed “borrow” your inspired idea! 👍🏼😜
