Back when I played (4th through start of 8th) my friends and I built/repurposed our own terrain. I found that for hills terrain, insulation foam is your friends (the cheap 1" stuff is your friend) and I had a lot of success cutting cereal boxes open to make ruined buildings. Another friend built a cathedral tower from the foam his wife's computer came in. The biggest problem we found is that once you start on that path, you start seeing every plastic bottle/cardboard box/chunk of foam for its terrain potential and start hoarding it. (Seriously, I've never had a pile of grey plastic shame, but I have had multiple boxes of weird looking 'someday this will be terrain' over the years.)

I did need to add 4" of wood to the side of one so the table was 4'×6' when assembled. It did require some repair work over the years as the legs weren't the sturdiest and ended up needing reinforcement. When i finally got my own place i bought a refurbished 6'×8' pool table from a pub that was shutting down so now i just use a topper with some game mats on that. It is made of hardier and thicker cardboard and snaps together with magnets instead of velcro, so it is rather sturdy. It is just buildings, not tied to a massive square base, so it is more modular and able to be configured however you want and the bottoms are made of rubber so they resist being accidentally moved.

I've been eyeing the molds from Hirst Arts for the last few days. For those unfamiliar, Hirst Arts puts out silicone molds, that allow you to cast your own terrain from stuff like dental plaster or plastic/resin (though these latter materials wear the molds out faster). Typically, you have to cast the molds dozens of times for most buildings (since you need tons of copies of some parts). But by the end, you're effectively playing with Lego blocks, and can make all sorts of unique structures for 28mm games. Most of the molds are for fantasy/pre-modern structures (lots of stone buildings), but there are a few that would work well for 40K. Some Modern and Sci Fi molds. Or maybe the Ancient Egyptian series, that could be painted like Necron blackstone. Or the "Gothic" series, which is VERY Imperium of Man. (Plus, the 40K galaxy is full of ancient structures, so stone ruins aren't THAT weird. Especially depending on your milieu, like desert wastelands or Knight Worlds).

The TT combat MDF stuff, as well as some other options, is available from Element via the referral link, just as an extra little boost to the channel. I think the general rule with terrain setup is to avoid units on one Objective having too much influence over the others. At the very least, units on a home Objective shouldn't be getting shot off it turn 1, particularly not by units on the opposing home Objective. Likewise there should be at least one, or preferably two, Objectives that are out of LOS of one side's home Objective to force some decisions on the players. The centre Objective can be a bit more open to add a bit of risk and make things like Area Denial more interesting. If you find melee armies are dominating too much, replacing some ruins with Impassable terrain to force them to take a longer route can help. Terrain in 10th really is a bit of a fine balancing act, it has much more influence on the points than many people realise (unless they had the temerity to own a lot of Artillery) and it's probably not talked about enough.

So I've had a question for awhile now... I tried to get into 40k back in 5th edition before giving it up because of price increases. Make more money now and never lost interest so I'm trying to get into it again. Back then it seemed like the terrain was a lot cooler. Like now it seems to me like everything is on a flat board with buildings and ruins where before there was a lot of terrain elevation like rock formations cliffs rivers and bridges and there'd be buildings throughout as well. Like the boards would be more like a train hobbiests diorama. Is it still feasible to play on detailed boards like that? Like I've seen some videos with really detailed trench warfare boards which id like to do something like that for my Kriegers. But i dont know how viable that is now especially since I'm pretty new to the hobby.

Spent a day trying to look around old stores online to see if I could find any of the old sector imperialis terrain. Only people selling it on ebay for stupid prices left it seems.

I'm thinking 44x45 (or 44x44) for 1000 pts.And you can't get 44x60 out of two 22x30 boards. It takes four of them. Two gets you 44x30 or 22x60.

The Titans terrain I've found to not be great for moving models through, tbh

I purchased my terrain during 8th edition (when I was a GW employee and had that 50% discount). I purchased a large volume of it. Its all built and painted, and I have more than I can use on the battlefield which allows for different options and design. Games Workshop currently has a MASSIVE HOLE in its 40k product line: Terrain. It's a question I have yet to figure out, what happened? Did they just give up making a full and varied terrain line? Their prices were exorbitant, that was always a downside of their terrain products. Nowadays 3d printed terrain can rival their quality and definitely crush them on price! ... but there was a glorious era of GW 40k terrain and I can't help to think those days are forever gone? Will GW release a full 40k terrain line in the future? Because whats been out there with their limited "frontier stockade" looking crap is not a complete line, or solution for someone new to 40k, by any measure.

Ok... so how do I create a piece of usable terrain that also serves as a mechanics refit/rearm station to house alternate weapon loadouts and such for the knight and scout and such? Perhaps a blown up bulk transport but I've never heard them really so much as discribed in literature. Cuz it should serve as a cosmetic diorama piece when not in use, just like the models do cuz lord knows if I can actually finish enough to field this "army" at all. ...cuz I just got the canis rex (...can I even tack him on to a guard list? Online thing is crying about it being 2 knight models) a sentinel, enginseer, and a small amount of infantry and cav is supposedly on the way.

we used chocolate bars to construct terrain quite a few times

I can’t believe how much people charge for 3d printed terrain. It’s not even that high if a quality either just seems crazy

I've played a lot of games on the Titan terrain. It's awesome for beginners, but the large firing lanes the grid system creates forced us to add terrain pieces. I recently got modular terrain from Snot Goblin Gaming, and it's amazing. Build any L shaped and square terrain you want, and breaks down easy for transport or storage. Highly recommend.
