Welcome back, Aneka! I have missed your professional tutorials. You have taught me a number of handy tips with this video. I usually shy away from buttonholes. I only have the old style Bernina 830 sewing machine, so I have never heard of the compensation plates, but what can one expect from a sewing machine that is almost 50 years old and still going strong! It is still functional, though. Despite its age, I still think that it was ahead of its time for the era during which it was manufactured. I wouldn't swap it for the world!

Hello and welcome back, I hope things are going well for you. I am a grumpy old man who just loves sewing and I really do enjoy (and need) your detailed lessons so I was very happy to get the notification of a new upload. I know the ladies will be the majority of your audience but if you are ever get stuck for ideas could I request that you make a video showing how to make a pattern and how you sew a flat round collar for a mans 'grand dad shirt.' , every video I have found on You Tube seems to be made by Indians who appear to be extremely skilled but difficult to follow. Threading through with an easy thread needle, good tip !

Such a pleasure to see you again on KZbin, your videos are always so fantastic and amazingly well explained! I have a question for you regarding the placement of the first top buttonhole: the start of this buttonhole (I mean the edge above) shouldn't be 3 mm above the centre of the button, following the same rule as the horizontal ones? I hope I have I'm being clear enough :-)
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 4 жыл бұрын
squinternet1 thank you so much. If you have a vertical button you could start with the same rule. So position the button first. The top of the button sits 1/4”-3/8” below the top of the garment. So for a vertical button you could start by measuring 3/8” to the top of the button and then 1/2 the width of the button. This is the button position. Then measure the vertical Buttonhole. Button plus 1/8” as standard. Half above and half below the button. IF you feel the top of the vertical Buttonhole is TOO close to the top of the garment then you can drop it slightly more. Does this make sense? Aneka x

Although I've been sewing for many years, I still find that sewing Button Holes neatly, on a garment made with heavier fabrics, a real challenge...Any suggestions? Love your videos!
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana, did you see the part at the end of the video when I talk about the compensation plate 25:47? I use that tool on my Bernina when I have to do buttonholes on thick fabrics. I would also usually do a corded buttonhole as the stitching will look better and won't sink into the fabric as much. The corded buttonhole videos will launch on the 5th October. I presume you will be able to get a similar tool for your machine, you want something that gives you a bigger surface area to move the fabric through if it is thicker or a difficult fabric. Let me know how you get on. Aneka x
