That's a problem with harbor freight jacks. Mine did that right out of the box. I had to buy jack oil and bleed it. Even though I bled it, it still is hard to make it come down slowly when there so much weight on it. You have to turn the handle REEEEALY slow and hope it works. It's easy to turn the handle too much and have the car come crashing down because the handle is so hard to turn when there's all that weight on the jack. You get what you pay for. I'd buy another one because the price is right, but you have to learn how to use them and make sure they are bled properly.

Thanks for posting this, Scotty. Everyone, pro or amateur mechanic should watch this even if just for a refresher. A friend of mine who was a mechanic for a local dealership for 15 years was helping a friend of his change his transmission filter at his house. The friend used a scissors jack, the only jack available at his friend's house, to jack up the car. The jack slipped while he was under the car and was killed instantly. Now, I always wait until I have the right tools for the job.

It is for this exact reason that I do not solely trust a jack. I always place the car on jack stands, and then raise the jack to just barely holding the car, as fail safe. Should a jackstand fail or tip, the jack is still there and vice versa. Also, I do not trust scissor jacks whatsoever!

Yeah he did this completely backwards , pinch welds are meant for the jack stands. If you jack it up there then you can't fit the jack stand under there. If you have a car that uses a unibody frame then just find the most solid piece such as a crossmember or sometimes tow hooks and jack them up there and then place jack stands where the pinch welds are.

I really appreciate Scottie taking the time to film this. I was also looking for the steel frame and wasn't coming across it. The jack was put on the side of the car and the frame bent. I wish that proper maintenance instructions were provided to newer or inexperienced owners of cars. I've learned a lot about pil changing, tires, antifreeze, lights, wipers, etc. from watching KZbin. I wish I had an older, willing family member who had shown me the ropes when I was younger, but I'm finding out and learning all about vehicle maintenance and repair through online resources. Also remember - setting the transmission to park won't have any effect once any single drive wheel loses contact with the floor. The park gear only works when all drive wheels have contact with the road. Once one of the drive wheels is raised, the car might as well be in neutral.

I'd usually jack from the centre then put the stands under the jacking points, that would seem to make more sense to me. Another good safety tip if you're going under the car is to take one or two tyres off and place them under the car somewhere suitable so that it the jacks collapse then the car will land on the tyre and hopefully not your head

Do NOT do what this guy did in the video. Do not jack the vehicle on the pinch welds (side jack points under door frame) they are made for a scissor jack. Use the internet and look up the central front and rear jack points of the car. Use your floor jack to lift the car at front or rear, then place your jack stands at the pinch welds. Lower the floor jack SLOWLY onto the jack stands, then pump the floor jack back up a little so if the jack stands happen to fail, you have the floor jack as a backup. It's also a good idea to just go ahead and shove a wheel under the car too if your are taking any wheels off. Don't forget to put the car in gear/park, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels with a block or something. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT PLACE ONE JACK STAND IN A CENTRALIZED POINT OF THE CAR LIKE THIS GUY DID. You want your jack stands spread as far apart as possible. What he showed in the video is a recipe for disaster.

After resting the vehicle on the jack stands, I always crank up the jack so it's just barely touching/lifting, as a failsafe. In the super rare instance the jack stand fails or tips over, you'll have that there as an extra measure. Typically, you're going to put the jack there anyhow when you go to take the car off the jackstand anyhow, so it's not even really any extra work.

Jack up a Subaru by the pinch welds and they will eventually fold over making the emergency jack in the trunk useless. This video teaches the opposite of how many others suggest. Jack it up by the cross member and put the jack stands under the pinch welds using the V in the stands to prevent pinch weld damage. Then at least if the car is bumped its balanced on 2 points rather than 1 in the center.

Unfortunately that is what Toyota owners manual states as the jack points. The spot where he put the jack stand under the body is actually where I understood the lifting point for a floor jack. There’s one in the rear basically under the license plate. Lift from there on each side and place the jack stands at the jack point.

The spot that he placed the jack stand actually is a jacking point identified by the Toyota manual. Some models like the 2014 corolla have a little screw-like attachment that comes with the tire changing kit that you place on the jack and insert into the hole to help jack the rear of the car up.

I just used mine to change my oil. ALOT faster and easier to use than a jack. Just have someone watch you drive up them if your afraid of rolling off, I did it by myself and could feel when I needed to stop, it has little bumps or indicators you can feel so that you know when to stop. I have the RhinoGears 12,000 pound ramps. I say get them, there is always risk when working on cars (As well as most things in life such as crossing the street), you just have to be careful.

This is not the proper way to jack up a unitized construction car. You should NOT go under a car that is resting on only a single jack stand in the middle. The car can rock from side to side. The proper way is to rest the car on 2 or 4 jack stands, positioned at those notches you showed us - unless there is lots of rust here and at this point in time you'll have to find another spot. You use your rolling jack at a middle point between the left and right that designated by the manufacturer - one point to jack up both front wheels and another point to jack up both rear wheels. A 1.5 ton jack will handle a subcompact car and compact car, a 2-ton jack will handle small to midsize cars. For bigger cars and small trucks you'll need a 3-ton. And I'm not sure the midpoint you showed us is the best place to place the rolling jack. You should check the owner's manual or a service manual for the proper points to put a rolling jack at front and at rear. Also, the lift pad on a rolling jack goes up in an arc, getting closer to the jack handle as it goes up. That is the main reason why it has wheels; they aren't simply to roll the jack around the shop. As the the pad moves up, the wheels need to be free to roll in, to compensate - otherwise the car could fall off the lift pad, or be poorly supported, at an angle. Its important to make sure those wheels are free to roll on the floor. This is another reason why the center lift point is the proper one to use - if you lift the car from the side, the car goes up in an arc, with the ground-wheels at the center of the arc and the lifted wheel forming the arc. Scotty has his jack placed at an angle that prevents its wheels from rolling toward the ground-wheels. This puts a lot of sideways stress on the jack, and risks the car falling off the jack. The higher you are lifting the longer the arc and the more dangerous this makes things, and the more likely it is to put damaging stress and instability on the jack.

@@AnoNymous-dh2sv Ok so if they are rated 1-ton each, and we know a ton is 2000 lbs. There is no way the car show here weights more than 2000 lbs at the rear. I'll take you word for it that Toyota designed a spot on pinch welds that's beefy enough to jack on (as you clearly pointed out) but generally not a good idea. I have 2 unibody GM cars that show in owners manual were jack points are and it ain't the pinch welds. You are an Icon on KZbin so I'll probably get lots of uninformed grief on this but tell everyone to read the OWNERS MANUAL for proper jack points for non-full framed vehicles. Thanks for your good work Scotty. People need to be able to work on there own cars (safely) when they can.

it only takes a few more seconds to let the car off the jack gently and not just drop the car off the jack in a quick instant, sure is safer and easier on the suspension and just the overall car.
@ox6942
@ox6942 7 жыл бұрын
Cheap, old jacks sometimes just drop like that unintentionally no matter how careful you're trying to be. Copious amounts of lubricant on the rotating parts helps but doesn't cure the problem. After the initial jerky drop one can usually tighten just a tad and control the drop rate in a little more conservative fashion.

On a newer vehicle, I expect this works but on an older vehicle these jacking points are often rusted out. Forty five years ago when I last attempted to jack up a vehicle this way, the jack point crumpled and failed. Ever since then I look for some thing solid under the vehicle and use that. To lift the front, my own vehicles have a cross member under the radiator with a mound in the center, my jack cups around the mound and I use that as a front lifting point. I usually put my axle stands under the front sub frame if possible.

Be careful when buying Chinese jacks. In the USA, Europe, and Japan, a jack designed to lift 2 tons has to be tested to obtain an official certificate that proves it can effectively lift at least those 2 tons. In other countries, that is not the case.

Check your manual people. You should have 1 jack point toward the middle of the car in front and another in back, this is where the jack lifts the car (not where you place a single jack stand). Place your 4 jack stands on the pinch welds. I dont know why Scotty showed this tutorial because it seems obvious to me that its not the recommended way to jack a vehicle properly.

Scotty, my car bent at the Jack point you are showing using a similar jack you have. It seems that the flat portion of the Jack against the slim Jack point is not so good. The Jack provided with the car has a slot the Jack points sits in preventing the metal to be bent. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

For those who dont know, most modern cars have a designated spot in the front and rear where you place the jack to lift .. You could try lifting it by the jack stand points but that would be awkward because youd have to lift it way higher because youre only doing one side, and then where would you put the jack stands. Youre better off just doing it properly. Supporting it with one jack stand is kind of sketchy and probably harder to do anyway. Just try it

If one is going to go under the car a hydraulic jack should not be depended upon. To be safe, one should assume it is going to spring a fluid leak and fall - leaving the car resting on one jack stand. Only time you should depend on a hydraulic jack is when changing a tire. You are not going to put any part of your body under the car when changing a tire.

Scotty Kilmer alright, sir. I'm not going to question your tactics because i'm a noob. However, your methods defy logic from what I've been reading on safe jackstand usage on different forums. Question for you, how would you lift the front end to place the jack stands, if there are no clear jack stand points mentioned in the manual apart from the four pinch weld areas?

Hocus Focus Productions I work on a flat concrete surface and nothing rolls on me, been doing it 46 years that way. But if you want , use two jack stands anywhere you can put them on solid metal under there that are exactly opposite each other in terms of the length of the vehicle.

The front end of most cars is far heavier than the rear, so you can pretty easily jack up the back using a jack on just one side. I wouldn't recommend doing the same for the front, however.

Don't be silly, cars or trucks have not had EMERGENCY BRAKES for over half a century for legal reasons they are called PARKING BRAKES and Ford certainly equipped all their 1986 f150s with them. Proof of this is this list of replacement cables: www.rockauto.com/m/mobilecatalog.php?carcode=1121656&parttype=1696 Sorry about your mishap. So those of you who bought a car or truck off an idiot who saw fit to remove the parking brake assembly, get yourself a couple of wheel chocks to avoid such incidents. And then he just opens the valve on the jack and let's the car crash down on the stand. This guy is a complete buffoon. He's doing it all ass backwards. He should've used the floor jack on the centralized front or rear point, and then placed his jack stands under the pinch welds.

I almost always agree with Scotty, but not this time. You don't put a floor jack direct on a pinch weld without some type of adapter. The pinch weld is not designed to actually support the weight. The factory scissor jack can be used there because it's specifically made for pinch welds, and it uses the pinch weld to positively locate the support pads on the proper spots.
