The Joe Cooley Scratch is a pretty simple scratch combo that utilizes two scratches; a swirl scratch which is just a fast tear scratch and a chirp scratch. This is an essential scratch to learn because it’s a stepping stone to more complicated scratch combos.
So in this video you’ll learn how to do a swirl scratch then later on, I’ll teach you how to put that swirl scratch and chirp scratch together to make a Joe Cooley scratch.

► SCRIPT
So you can think of a tear scratch as a more complex baby scratch. So I perform my tear scratches by doing 2 pushes forward and 1 pull back. Now once you’ve mastered this scratch, you can do it faster and faster and eventually your tear scratch will become a swirl scratch.
So to do a Joe Cooley scratch, first do a swirl scratch then follow it up with 2 chirp scratches.
(Keep in mind you can also start with 2 chirp scratches then a swirl scratch if you prefer)
To switch things up, I usually do a multiple chirps then a swirl scratch, and when I’m freestyling scratching, I usually do a Joe Cooley scratch to mark the end of a long combo.

It's really cool that you use an entry level controller to show of pretty complex scratching. It shows that it doesn't matter which hardware or software you own. You can scratch on almost any setup - all you need to do is practice

I find myself now down the path of committing to becoming a scratch dj. Rona creating a limited income I ended up with an FLX6. So I've been drilling for 4 days straight an hour a day. working on chirp scratches, baby scratches, transforms, and starting to learn tear scratches. When I try to follow along with various drill videos I find myself sitting here on New Years Day wondering "Do I need to send this thing back?". It seems like, and I get that the problem is likely my technique. I'm like 95% sure of that. I mean. I'm still new. That's reasonable to think. When I ramp up the speed by trying to follow the indicator on the platter itself. It seems like I start to lose tracking when I really ramp that speed up to crazy 130 bpm levels. when I try to double down on 16th note scratches. It makes me wonder. What are the "scratch limits" of a controller. Even one with platters like the FLX6? Is there simply just a routine or combo that is just not gonna happen with a controller that turntables, even cheap ones like the AT120x's make possible? Curious to hear your opinion but also want to send a new years challenge your way. 2 routines Carlo. For 2021. The first. Make the sickest, most difficult display of scratching on a controller you've ever put down. Something YOU think is super hard. Then, do that same routine on turntables and then maybe talk about the differences? The second routine, make the sickest, most difficult turntable scratch routine you've ever thrown down. then try to do that same routine on a controller and... well. you get the idea. 2 part series video. You've said in many videos no matter what. Turntables are your favorite. So please, help new people get a deeper understanding of why that is.

Transition songs help tremendously. They are usually pre-edited, recorded, and then dropped into live sets to help transition. Example song would be like Black Eyed Peas - Imma Be. It naturally goes from 92bpm and transitions to 122bpm at the end. From there you can mix in house/EDM beats without trying to drop a ~125bpm song into the 85-95bpm range. Hope this helps (1 year later lol)
