Lol I've stayed in a lot of monasteries and it cracks me up when people say "I'm sick of people I want to live in a monastery!", You mean you're sick of people so you want to live in close quarters with strangers day in day out whom you have nothing in common with?

I find it easier to get along with strangers I knw nothing about. But once Ive known them for a certain amount of time I tend to start avoiding them. Idk, i just dont wanna have to make small talk all the time. Its easier with strangers but once those strangers become acquaintances then I just dont knw wht to talk about anymore lol

i literally respect people who do martial arts SO MUCH. the amount of dedication you need to be able to do it is amazing. as a kid, i was taken to learn it and i did it for a few months but quit cause i lacked commitment and i didn’t realise how serious it was. i realised how much i lacked commitment when i did different clubs like swimming for a few years but quit cause i got bored. so it was my fault for not knowing the reality of these things. but like fr, I RESPECT MARTIAL ARTS SM SO ILL JUST ENJOY IT FROM THE SIDELINES

This is an absolute valuable and highly informative video. This is a potent wake up call for me and I am extremely grateful for it. I am ashamed and embarrassed of myself however. Turns out, I wanted the movie script version of being with the Temple simply because I never asked questions. I never made an effort to learn. I must be honest. I think I am one of the people you mentioned. I pictured peace, harmony, and beautiful martial arts. I am so sorry for my ignorance. While I still desire peace and calm, I now know my place without a doubt. My place is not with those men. What I have yet to learn probably wouldn't qualify me to deliver goods, much less get to know any of the good people there. Wishing the good people everywhere the best in life. And may you have good fortune in return for posting this video.

I'm not Japanese but I practiced Okinawan Karate as a white guy. Ranton is trying to be gentle but you had better be listening or you'll regret it. I've noticed in military and martial arts that's how instructors have to be in order to be effective. Respect and love to you, Ranton. I hope the Temple becomes all that you hope it can be. 🤜🤚

Great suggestions! A lot of people don’t realize the warrior monk/full monk difference, and that the fully ordained monks stay well clear of the crowds of tourists. As you say, this is their way of life, not something for the casual visitor to join in just for the novelty. If people want a Buddhist experience, there are meditation and sutra recital programs at other sacred Buddhist sites like Wutai Shan or Emei Shan, where for a donation you can spend a few days living in the temple as a lay disciple.

@@georgefreemon2935 Good point. Though I'm not an English native, I'd still say that it's necessary to fully connect to US culture. Besides that the US was formed by many different cultures and English as their way to communicate. Japan on the other hand is almost purely Japanese. So in order to connect with Japanese people, you'd have to approach them in their own language. That's my humble opinion.

I went to train with my Shifu in the summer of 2017. Yan Feng Shifu taught us xiao hong quan and qi xing quan, and we did a lot of ji ben gong. Its a real shame Wangzhigou has been torn down now, but needless to say, I had a great time at Shaolin. I only was able to go because my Shifu was good friends with the masters and administration of the temple, so he was able to organize a trip. No, I didn't have to shave my head.

@@bottomtext5130 Xiao hong quan and qi xing quan are both shaolin forms, called taolu (like a kata). Ji ben gong is basic kung fu drills, Yan Feng Shifu is who taught us, who was funnily enough, also Ranton's master. Wangzhigou is the small town with the little motels and cornerstore where all the tourists stayed, along with some kung-fu summer camps and other shit like that. It was torn down I think in 2019 because it didn't fit the building code, at least, according to my shifu.

Why would you learn dialect as a foreigner haha, that sounds like a circumstance you would only end up in if you live in some incredibly rural area where people can't speak Mandarin. I think even the oldest people I've met even in Zhejiang spoke fluent Mandarin, though it doesn't matter because they still have the "you're foreign, you don't speak Chinese" ignore you to your face mentality haha, I'm not sure even knowing Hakka would help with that 🤔 I do remember visiting incredibly rural locations in Hunan and everyone speaking a dialect I had never heard of, with apparently no Mandarin, but I don't know any foreigners living there.

I really wanna thank you for clearing up the stigma that "in order to learn Shaolin Kung-Fu, you *have* to train at the Shaolin Temple." I honestly thought the SAME EXACT THING; mostly because where I live (the US), there's a lot of doubt behind which Shaolin Kung-Fu schools are _actually_ genuine and legitimate. I don't mean to speak for everybody, but this is why I carried that assumption around for so long. Thanks for clearing that up, bro.

I think what Ranton was getting at is that, no one is really going to be holding your hand at the Shaolin Temple, or at least, they really don’t want to. It’s really more so about being independent and taking it upon yourself to improve and learn. Your peers and teachers aren’t going to come to you and hand everything to you; every lesson, technique, etc. Of course they WILL be there to help and teach you, but it’s not going to be so easy and straight forward. Or, it MAY be so straightforward that you don’t even know and realize it. At least, that’s what I’m interpreting from this video.

Ranton, i know what i say will be common and also frowned upon, but you know how cool it would be if you could go back to the temple but this time as a youtuber? I know that is not allowed and its bad-eyed by all of them, but you can come down to compromises with them. You already experienced that from the inside, you know what you can do and what you cant. But it would be an amazing documentation about the life in the temple, routines and a lot of stuff people are really intrested in! I assure you you'd get millions of views.

I remember my dad said he was invited to join because he fixed the master's back (he was a chiropractor at the time) and he has a massive amount of proof that he and his brothers were trained there. Apparently the people of the town near the temple would go there to get their backs fixed and they paid with poultry (he decided to give it to then for free). Of course, he could speak Chinese (Cantonese).
