This is an absolute valuable and highly informative video. This is a potent wake up call for me and I am extremely grateful for it. I am ashamed and embarrassed of myself however. Turns out, I wanted the movie script version of being with the Temple simply because I never asked questions. I never made an effort to learn. I must be honest. I think I am one of the people you mentioned. I pictured peace, harmony, and beautiful martial arts. I am so sorry for my ignorance. While I still desire peace and calm, I now know my place without a doubt. My place is not with those men. What I have yet to learn probably wouldn't qualify me to deliver goods, much less get to know any of the good people there. Wishing the good people everywhere the best in life. And may you have good fortune in return for posting this video.

Great suggestions! A lot of people don’t realize the warrior monk/full monk difference, and that the fully ordained monks stay well clear of the crowds of tourists. As you say, this is their way of life, not something for the casual visitor to join in just for the novelty. If people want a Buddhist experience, there are meditation and sutra recital programs at other sacred Buddhist sites like Wutai Shan or Emei Shan, where for a donation you can spend a few days living in the temple as a lay disciple.

So in order to connect with Japanese people, you'd have to approach them in their own language. That's my humble opinion.

Why would you learn dialect as a foreigner haha, that sounds like a circumstance you would only end up in if you live in some incredibly rural area where people can't speak Mandarin. I think even the oldest people I've met even in Zhejiang spoke fluent Mandarin, though it doesn't matter because they still have the "you're foreign, you don't speak Chinese" ignore you to your face mentality haha, I'm not sure even knowing Hakka would help with that 🤔 I do remember visiting incredibly rural locations in Hunan and everyone speaking a dialect I had never heard of, with apparently no Mandarin, but I don't know any foreigners living there.

I really wanna thank you for clearing up the stigma that "in order to learn Shaolin Kung-Fu, you *have* to train at the Shaolin Temple." I honestly thought the SAME EXACT THING; mostly because where I live (the US), there's a lot of doubt behind which Shaolin Kung-Fu schools are _actually_ genuine and legitimate. I don't mean to speak for everybody, but this is why I carried that assumption around for so long. Thanks for clearing that up, bro.

I think what Ranton was getting at is that, no one is really going to be holding your hand at the Shaolin Temple, or at least, they really don’t want to. It’s really more so about being independent and taking it upon yourself to improve and learn. Your peers and teachers aren’t going to come to you and hand everything to you; every lesson, technique, etc. Of course they WILL be there to help and teach you, but it’s not going to be so easy and straight forward. Or, it MAY be so straightforward that you don’t even know and realize it. At least, that’s what I’m interpreting from this video.

Ranton, i know what i say will be common and also frowned upon, but you know how cool it would be if you could go back to the temple but this time as a youtuber? I know that is not allowed and its bad-eyed by all of them, but you can come down to compromises with them. You already experienced that from the inside, you know what you can do and what you cant. But it would be an amazing documentation about the life in the temple, routines and a lot of stuff people are really intrested in! I assure you you'd get millions of views.

Meditation is focusing on inner thoughts by yourself and improving on your method of thought or just removing yourself from toxic thoughts. It's not about finding a state of mind at all. It's about finding a way to ignore external stimuli. Their methods help.

I remember my dad said he was invited to join because he fixed the master's back (he was a chiropractor at the time) and he has a massive amount of proof that he and his brothers were trained there. Apparently the people of the town near the temple would go there to get their backs fixed and they paid with poultry (he decided to give it to then for free). Of course, he could speak Chinese (Cantonese).

As always a well-structured and informative (and enjoyable) video about Shaolin. I especially agree with your sentiment about learning Mandarin before heading to China (in general tbh), but then speaking as a Chinese language and culture major, of course I would :P Good times at 0:52 btw

I feel like the point about knowing mandarin is just common sense. If you're gonna spend possibly years in a country where the native language isn't english then you're gonna have to know the actual native language.

But thanks overall for this video, my karate sensei went to China for like 3 years I forgot if he trained at the shaolin temples but I know he learned drunken boxing there and a few other styles (and how to use weapons). My point is thanks a lot for the video I am sure the information will help a lot!
