can you do a video on how to knit with circular needles without joining in the round. There is this really cute scarf/shawlette i want to do and it requires using circular needles to achieve the right size. the pattern is super easy but im super new to knitting. Russian. Definitely not spit! Lol. I’m thinking you could use spray bottle of water instead of spit.
@sheepandstitch5 жыл бұрын
@@nancyel281 So I've tried using water, and I find it to be less effective than spit. Not sure why exactly! Possibly our saliva has glue-like properties lacking in water? If you try water, report back and let us know how it goes!
@sheepandstitch5 жыл бұрын
@@nancyel281 You can certainly try with water. I've found that saliva works better though. I guess our spit has some magical glue-like properties!

@@Ljwahoske Nope! no blanket tutorial yet. I just posted a lace scarf tutorial and am deciding whether to make a blanket tutorial or a quick holiday gifts tutorial. So many ideas, too little time! For the Russian Join, the sharper the needle, the better. I find that once you have a good bit of bunching on the needle, its best to push the needle through the bunching by standing the needle on a table and then pushing the bunching down the needle so that it goes through. Bit hard to explain, but hope it makes sense!

Not sure if it was said in other comments, but you can accomplish the spit splice without the nasty business of a furry mouth by dipping the tails of your yarn into warm, mildly soapy water, then felting it. Same effect, hairless mouth! That being said both of these methods were new to me. Thanks for the tutorial!!

I almost always end up with some of my hair caught in my work, so, I always leave a dna trail since I also use saliva to make threading a yarn needle to sew in ends as well. I also wash whatever I make before handing it over. The Russian join will make it easier to use up some scraps at least and make for less bulky color changes compared to my current methods.

I love the Russian join! I just knit blanket squares for Wrap with Love, an Aussie charity that distributes these blankets around the world, but if I'm doing coloured stripes, I still use the Russian join at the start of the changeover because it means WAY less loose ends to weave in, and less chance of those loose ends popping out over time. I've worked out that 1 sewing needle length is the amount needed to do 4 stitches from the end so I make the join at the end of that needle length (with 4 stitches left to knit) , and so the actual join ends up on the outside edge of the square. Hope this makes sense and I hope it helps someone else! Thanks!!

I usually use 3-ply worsted-weight wool. I use a combination of these two methods. I unravel the two ends like a spit-join. Then, I use scissors to snip one ply on each side where the unraveling begins. When using 3-ply yarn, this means there will be a total of 4 plies through the join, 2 from each side. Then, in the middle, I fold 1 ply from each end across each other. That means there is 1 ply from each end going through the join and 1 ply from each end folding back on itself in the middle. That means 4 plies, with a fold in the middle. The fold in the middle locks one ply into the other. Then I spit in my palm -- I find this more controllable than putting the yarn in my mouth. Then I put the join in the pool of spit and rub my palms together just like in your video. The result is that I get an invisible join. The folded-over ends make the join much stronger, and cutting off one ply from each end makes the result less bulky. I LOVE not having to weave in ends after I finish the work.

Love this, Davina! I knew of the spit splice but I’ve never knitted with a natural fiber before 😮. That Russian join is pretty cool. To join a new ball, I usually just overlap the ends and hold them together, knitting 5 or 6 stitches with both and then dropping the short end and continuing to knit with the new ball of yarn, weaving in the ends later. Thanks for this incredibly helpful video. 🧶
@sheepandstitch5 жыл бұрын
I usually join yarn the way you mention (by overlapping). I find it works quite well, but when I’m feeling adventurous I like using one of these methods!

I used the Russian join for the first time just now and figured out a trick for figuring out what side is the tail and what side is either going to the project at a glance. After you get the tail out of the center of the yarn and have the loop, you can tie a knot in the tail and either just leave the needle there (if you have another one you can use) or knot that end after you remove the needle. That way you know the end with with the knot weather it has the needle on it or not you know to cut there. My first attempt was successful, but I accidentally cut the piece going to my new ball instead of that tail, that's why I tried this and it made it so much easier to tell which is which. I had this problem because I had a bit longer tails, and the ball was down to my side so I wasn't completely sure which was which.
