I suppose it could depend on your age to some extent or if you remember it from Brownies/Guides. I didn't go to either but am in my 70s and was taught the reef knot by my mum. It's generally my standard permanent knot for many things.

My dad called this a sailor’s knot because that’s how they tied the knot on the front of their uniforms (World War II) so they would lay flat and “regulation”. His phrase was “right over left and left over right, makes a knot secure and tight”. The rhyme seemed to make it easier for me to remember … for the last 70+ years and I still say it as I make the knot. 😊

Hi friends, hope you enjoy the video. A quick note on this knot- PLEASE use your own discretion with this knot. Some viewers have commented that it comes undone with slippery yarn so I would recommend that you test it with your yarn before committing to it fully. Better to be safe than sorry 💕 If it’s slippery/soft , then leave a tail that can be weaved in or use the fisherman’s knot that I share at the beginning of the video 👍🏻
@julieoelker1865 Жыл бұрын
I don't use knots like this. It's not worth the risk of having my project fall apart. I leave 12 inch tails and weave in 9 inches. I love making lacy shrugs. For garments, I only change yarn at the end of the row so that I can weave the ends into the side seams. That way, I never have a weak spot in the middle of my sweater.

@@Vmurph that’s a great idea. It will be a while before I can do a video about it so I would recommend you watch this video. You might also consider carrying your tails and working over them to help secure them. The areas may be slightly thicker in those areas but I’m sure not to where anyone else would notice. Hi @@Vmurph, The Magic Knot can be found on this channel, but I have to say that Bella Coco has a better view of it as she uses 2 different colours. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2bLoqKIZbB9fqM) Or, you could just put a small knot in the end of the yarn on the reef knot to stop it sliding through.

I don’t think the one I was doing was certainly not the square knot and I’m not sure it was even the granny knot. It wouldn’t come apart but it was a much bigger knot, that’s for sure. What a difference doing the square knot correctly verses incorrectly makes especially when working with thicker yarns. The square knot I did just a few moments ago is almost invisible! Just make sure that the yarn can not be picked apart if you cut close to the knot. This one won’t come out if there are tails on either side but it will come undone with softer yarn if you cut too close to the knot. 😕 I haven’t had issues with cotton yarn but I discovered that I could press my nail into the knot with wool yarn and it came undone . If it’s a soft yarn leave a bit if a tail on either side and work your stitches around it (no weaving necessary ) ❤️

Thank you, what clear explanation! This knot will work and will be secure with "sticky" yarns like wool, but alas, won't hold mercerized cotton as I just tried this three times with that and they all came apart (with quite a bit of tugging, to be fair). I do think knots like this have their place, but I have yet to find a truly small, secure knot that is reasonably easy to tie and can be used with the slickest of yarns. But thank you, this knot certainly has its uses.

Yes - unfortunately that seems to be the case for the more slippery yarns. I’ll continue the hunt for small knots but ugh I’m thinking the fisherman’s knot is ultimately the most reliable so far ❤️

@@PlayHookywithMe If you ever discover a “tiny knot” solution that works on slippery yarn, please put those words in your title? I work with bamboo yarn a lot, because it feels so luxurious, but it’s a pain in the butt for knotting. If I ever see those words in one of your titles, I will jump on that video so fast! 😂

Yes, in Girl Scouts the saying we were taught was - right over left, left over right, makes a knot nice and tight!

Thanks! Will try this! I’ve been using the magic knot for a good while and love it!

I think of the two , the magic knot is more reliable. But I really love the size of this one. ❤️

I've been doing the fisherman's knot for years.... After watching this, i put the square knot through its paces (I love m'self some experimental data) and woooowwww! This knot held despite everything I threw at it. The top 3 things about the square knot (at least for me): 1. the resulting knot is MUCH smaller, thereby less noticeable in the final fabric 2. it's easier and faster to do in situ 3. it works on all sizes from sewing thread to bulky 5 (again, for me). THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

this is helpful, I try making fisherman's knot and this is much better

Living on a boat, you learn real quick which is a proper square knot but I wasn’t aware I could just snip the ends that short without issue. No more weaving joins!

Well unfortunately I was wrong on that. It is dependent on the type of yarn. I was using a very dry Colton so it worked like charm but many let me know that it won’t work with soft yarn. 🥹 But in that case I leave the tails in now and just crochet over them as I go and I’ve had no issues 👍🏻❤️

THANKS SO MUCH for this clarification! I could never figure out why sometimes my knot worked and sometimes not.

Thank you so much for the details! I really wanted something with less of a bump than than the Magic Knot and this is it.

Thank you!!!!!! This is the first explanation I actually got, very good directions. I think this makes a smaller knot than the one where you tie the ends to each other. I've been using that method for years because just couldn't get this one right. Haha Thanx again. Very helpful.💜

Glad it was helpful! I’ve heard it comes out with soft yarn so I think it’s one that has to be tested still 💕

Please just make sure it stays put if you decide to cut close to the knot. Many have mentioned it comes out with soft yarn. It will be fine if you keep the tails and just work over them as you go. No need for weaving in . ❤️
