WARNING! Do this without the car/truck running. Leave the car/truck off and jump the motorcycle. With the car/truck running, the voltage output will be 13.5v to 14v, which may overload the motorcycle's starter.

Uncovered the bike to go for a ride, and for the first time in 10 years of riding, I had a dead battery. This video got me going ... I figured it was possible, but hadn't done it before. Thanks.

Not recommended to do it this way,connect the negative to the car and then connect the negative lead on the other end of the jump lead to the chassis of your motorcycle. Do not connect the negative lead to the negative terminal of your motorcycle battery, as doing so may cause an explosion.

If your motorcycle battery is dead, you should charge it properly. The charging system on a bike is generally not enough to charge a dead battery after jumping. The bike will maintain a charged battery, but extended use with a weak battery can actually cause components of your bike's charging system to fail.
@W.451
@W.451 7 жыл бұрын
It would charge it back up with enough time, 5 or more hours. 1-1/2 to 2 amps charge rate for those small batteries. Motorcycles have an amp limiter in the circuit and will allow a max of 2 amp charge rate. A large motorcycle's altenator may have a capacity of 30+ amps to run extra lights etc. But in a car the alt. will charge at full duty for too long and over heat.(really dead batt). Car alternators are designed for about 50% continuous output and full output for a limited time.

Just in case this helps anybody, I was finally able to use my car to jumpstart my 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R by connecting the negative cable to something metal on my car w/ the positive cable directly on the terminal, and both the positive AND negative cables on the appropriate terminals on the bike - WITHOUT starting the car. It would not work unless the negative cable was directly connected to the bike’s terminal.

Jumping it with a car won't hurt anything. It's all 12v DC, so it won't hurt it as long as the car is off, I've done it many many many times. If I were you I would check the battery connections and see if they are clean and not corroded and also the voltage output of the bike. In my experience the motorcycle batteries only last about two years, so you might need a new one. Put it on a regular charger, give it a low-amp charge, then see if it holds 12.5 volts when it's not charging.

Hook the ground cable to the chasis of the truck last and disconnect first to avoid sparks and explosion. Diesel trucks are 12 volts.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 11 жыл бұрын
yeah, that happens. You should have a fuse that is around 30 amps. It might be by itself and not with the other fuses in your main fuse box, or it could be with the other ones. If you don't have a voltmeter you can kinda check the voltage by the headlight brghtness, though it isn't a reliable means to do so. Normal conditions, your headlight should be SLIGHTLY dim at idle and get a little brighter when you rev up a little. Abnormal is if the headlight is very dim at idle.

I thought about doing this but was always worried the car battery would fry my bikes electrical system. This was a very helpful video since my Battery Tenders weren't cutting it in keeping my battery properly charged in winter. I bought a cheap smallest battery for a Yugo at Walmart and will use it to start my two Triumph motorcycles every week if the temperature is at least 40% until spring. It was also good to know not to have a vehicle running if you jump the motorcycles from them. It will save you some expensive electrical work to your Bike.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 8 жыл бұрын
+Doc Mason electricity pulls (in amperage), it doesn't push. So the size of the battery doesn't affect it. Just don't start the car while you have the bike connected to it. I've seen a car fry parts of the electrical system after the car is started when connected to the bike, but I've done this many times without starting the car and it's fine.

it is perfectly safe as long as the car/truck IS NOT running as I mentioned in the video. It is not recommended to jump a ecu controlled car while the other is running either. I knew of one guy that did it and had to get his bike repaired, and the truck he used to jump it was running.

No dash lights or anything. I'm hoping i just blew a fuse and i can get a new one. I dont have a voltmeter, i need to get one. Kind of tight on money right now because im paying off a ticket

Is it safe to connect the negative of the bike? some people say you need to connect the negative to some other non painted part of the bike to prevent spark..
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft Жыл бұрын
It's not so much to prevent spark, it's more about giving the starter a solid ground. If you connect the negative cable to the engine, then you'll get a better ground since the starter body is grounded and bolted directly to the engine. If you connect the jumper cables to the battery then you're relying on the ground to go through the ground wiring that connect to the engine.

@@LegitRaceCraft Won't it cause any short circuit and blow out fuses ?
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft Жыл бұрын
Not if the vehicle with the larger charging system is turned off. Electricity pulls, it doesn't push. So as long as the voltage is the same (which it is unless you have one of the few 6 volt or 24 volt vehicles that you're trying to jump with). The starter is 12 v and so are both batteries. The starter will only pull what it needs to operate at the 12v it's given. It's fine. Fuses won't blow unless the wires are connected to backwards. The charging system is what would take damage, but that would only be damaged if the large vehicle is on while the small vehicle is (and they're connected). Leave the large vehicle off while the small one is jumped and you'll be fine.

@W.451

To much voltage will push to many amperes. With ANY vehicle, the source vehicle's engine should be off. If one alternator and voltage regulator has a slightly higher voltage than the other when both are running, there will be a clash and be a risk of damaging the other alternator. One with higher voltage will try to drive the other as an electric motor. Never subject the small alternator of a motorcycle to that. It will lose. Then $$$ you will lose. Advice derived from the Society of Automotive Engineers.

so i didnt start my ninja for two weeks and the battery died. I tried starting with my car and jumper cables by connecting the negatives first then the positives. I left the car off the whole time. The bike started right up but so i took the cables off the bike battery and then it just suddenly started sounding like shit. Sounded horrible, like maybe the engine and the RPM gauge was all over the place, like not even matching the revs and it almost seemed like the choke was working backwards
@svenalex26
@svenalex26 11 жыл бұрын
when it first started up it sounded fine but as soon as i removed the cables thats when everything went to shit. I hope i didnt destroy some internals in bike or mess up the engine at all. After i did that when the bike died from playing messing with the choke the battery was completely dead, not even dash lights would turn on. Best case scenario im hoping the bike battery just got fried and all it needs is a new one. Im gonna buy a new one. IM NEVER DOING THIS AGAIN

@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft Жыл бұрын
Negative. The battery is smaller. I wouldn't even attempt it. Electrical components pull whatever energy they need, so I would be concerned that the starter would pull too much juice from the motorcycle battery and damage the battery. Even if nothing is damaged, the motorcycle battery wouldn't be able to provide cold-cranking-amps anyway.

I've heard, that once both of the vehicles are running you have two charging systems competing against each other if the jumpers are still connected. Supposedly the one with the strongest charging system will fail. I've never seen it happen, but since it's easy enough to jump it with the car off I just leave it off.

There are a few things it can be. Once it is jumped the charging system should keep the bike running while it is charging the battery, if the stator (charger) is weak then it wouldn't be able to keep the bike running without revving, If your battery terminals are corroded then it would cause the battery to not charge also. Pull the battery out and give it a full charge. Put it back in the bike and see how the bike behaves, if you have a voltmeter then check the voltage when the bike is off and also when the bike is on, after the full charge. At idle you should see around 13.7v or higher, if anything less then replace the stator. When off the voltage should be 12.5v or higher. Anything less replace the battery.

+RCG-Platinum Are you sure you're letting your engine warm up properly? A cold engine is likely to stall when idling. For most bikes it's a good idea to keep the choke engaged for several minutes when you start riding - check your operator's manual for how your bike functions.

Yeah I went and bought a new battery and that fixed the problem with it having to be hooked to my car. But then the bike started to not stay running once it was on i know the engine wasnt cold because putting my hand near it felt really hot. Hoever once the bike was started up it wouldnt stay up like it couldnt idle it would start I would let go of the throttle and then it would just die I think i need to clean the carbs or something

even if you blew your stator it would still start, the stator just charges it. Unless I'm misunderstanding you and when you typed "stator" you meant "Starter".

Tallon Westlake I'm not sure what the bike is, but most have a main fuse separate from the other fuses, the cables could have touched when you pulled them off and blown the main fuse. It should be a 30 amp fuse. I would find the location of that and check it first. Then the voltage regulator/rectifier you can check by looking at the plastic on the regulator plug for any signs of melting, or the pins on the regulator for any signs of scorching. If not these, then I don't know, it seems like the only two things that will kill all power.

you should actually touch the positive to the starter not to the battery on the bike, jumping the motorcycle the way you have in this video you almost every time blow your stator, so yes it will jump the bike off every time the way you have done it, but then the bike will no longer charge for you, you will most likely have to change the stator, negative to bike battery, positive to starter is the correct way.

IF you can get to the starter solenoid without spending 90 minutes removing all the tupperware first! I had a '98 BMWR1100RT that was a PIA to jump start because everything was buried. The next time I had the tupperware off, I ran some heavy #8 wire to the battery side of the starter solenoid and the loose end terminated in a female plug. I also spliced in a 50 amp fuse I had laying around just to cover my ass. I cut the clamp off the positive lead of my motorcycle jumper cables and installed a matching male plug. The next time I accidently left the "parking" lights on, I didn't even have to pop the seat to jump start the bike.
