Really helpful with the onscreen diagrams and slow motion. I hadn’t ever seen the proper timing of the downstream stroke before so THANKS

Dude I love your videos. I have a request for a video as someone new to the sport. Can you do a video purely on strokes. A quick how to do each stroke then in what river conditions would you use them and when you wouldn't use them. All the different draws, rudders, sweeps, compound strokes, etc etc. Theres a lot of stuff on youtube on how to do strokes but not much applying it all to a dynamic river situation.

Thats a fantastic idea Josh! Thanks!

I try to tell people practice the eddy turn. I was once in a eddy it pulled me upstream and even beached my kayak. Had a little surf action with low sand bank. Lots of fun too.

Catching every eddy helps timing, boat control, and confidence. However, teaching and using the "duffek" stroke really helps catch eddys high and not drift thru them. Many self taught kayakers have never heart of it, and you can watch them "drag" into an eddy, and if they are going fast, they may drift thru the eddy to the other side. The "duffek" stops you in the eddy quickly with precision and improves your control of the kayak.

For sure Solo. I need to do a vid on it.

I'm enjoying your skill videos too. I normally have my boat stored until it warms up. What moderately priced gear gear do you recommend for boating in cold weather? I'm in Alabama so not crazy cold. Do you use any insulation under your legs to keep them warm? Thanks. I think a good video is what to do if you get hung on a rock or get hung up sideways on a shallow drop.

Well done, no one will convice me that the Zen 2 isn't the best begginer boat out there. I have tried the Remix and dagger... the zen is just so forgiving and playful for beginners.

I have a Zen 2 and learned to whitewater kayak in it. It's edges can be unforgiving at times. (The picture is me in my Zen 2 going through Lower Kenney, New River Gorge.)

Nice looking Shiva, what is your take on it, especially vs Remix
@RiverKingsKayak3 жыл бұрын
It was def an edgy creeker that surfs verg well. Snapping into micro eddies ir really easy. Like edgy creekers are, it holds a line well. I am a displacement guy so my take is biased. Lol. I felt like I sat high and my knees were low. However, this was a small. Perhaps a med would have felt better on me. All said, I would much prefer the remix.

Getting ready to crossover from sea kayak to whitewater. What are some tips?
@RiverKingsKayak3 жыл бұрын
I think you will love it! When going from long boat to ww boat, things happen much faster. That is the freedom you will grow to love. You can literally go anywhere at the flick of a wrist. Learning to harness that will be the biggest difference I think you will find. Be aggressive and have fun!
@bryanb83663 жыл бұрын
Yesterday I got to surf in a slicey boat for the first time. The guide said he was surprised I didn't end up going for a swim. He put me in a dagger kingpin which is a big difference from a Greenland sea kayak. Surprisingly I really really enjoyed it and can't wait to get back out. Right now where we're at in Ohio our rivers are blown out and it's probably wise I wait to the levels come down a little bit before I try anything bigger. Thank you for your videos they have been an extreme help.

Hey Pete, just curious, whats your reasoning for not using a j stroke when you go into an eddy?
@RiverKingsKayak2 жыл бұрын
J stroke in a kayak when catching eddies? J stroke like when in a canoe when trying to go straight? Im not sure exactly how to answer as we may be using different terms. Sometimes you plant the inside turn paddle towards the bow of the kayak to pivot quickly, sometimes you plant it further towards the stern to carve a straighter path into the eddy. If that is what you mean, I do those strokes when needed.
@paulward2483 жыл бұрын
these guys are too polite or they're scared of hitting your boat when they come into an eddie
@RiverKingsKayak3 жыл бұрын
I tell them that all the time.. Rubbing is racing!! A lot of newer paddlers are timid about boat contact. That all goes away with time.
