The drip rings? It keeps all the water from running down your arms when you lift one side of the paddle. Having dry hands can make a big difference after a few hours.

In simple terms, they act as an anti lightning rod.

they keep the water from dripping down the paddle shaft to your hands. I feel like I still get drips all over the place regardless tho. lol.
