You're so right, about getting them real exercise. All dogs need way more exercise/stimulation than most people realize/are willing to provide. It really is the difference between an amazing companion, and a monster. They also respond to commands/training when they're tired.

This is awesome info and much needed thank you. I adopted a dog last year what I thought was Siberian husky mix turned out to be Australian Shepard, Australian cattle dog and collie, she is very much collie at heart and is such a wonderful girl and very intelligent. Sometimes I think she runs and organizes my day around play and walks lol

And now I’m going to have to teach my border collie to paint! I’ve always taught things that would have a benefit in regards to things we accomplish. Aka going potty, laying on her bed, dropping her toy. But she could definitely learn that and we could have so much fun with it! Thank you for the idea!

We have a 15month old border collie and every time some of us mention him there is always this one person who says "A border collie? How do you keep him occupied? They have endless energy!" It always makes me a little sad? Border collies are very popular in my country, and because of the stereotype of "endless energy" (no living being has endless energy), people have something I like to call a "Tiger mom schedule" for their dog. And they start with puppies right away: Monday agility. Tuesday man trailing. Wednesday obedience. Thursday trick lessons. And don't forget the training sessions in between. And walks that go on for hours. Every. Effing. Day. The end result is a very restless (not "hyperactive") dog who doesn't know how to relax because people believe a border collie needs to run out their energy every day. There are even cases of border collies getting heart attacks in the middle of a competition. My routine is to let him play/run in the backyard (which is huge) for a few minutes to get the energy out a little bit. Then, there is a concentration phase: "Agility" (very slowly, I know that he can do a fast run but that's not what I want to do right now), obedience, tricks... The concentration phase is usually very short, especially when it is hot outside. After that, he is allowed to run and play again. We go on a very quick toilet walk and he is ready for his nap again. Everything included (except for the nap) takes around 30 minutes. Depending on his mood and what we planned for the rest of the day (if I notice he is still very tired I let him be) we do this 2 to 3 times a day. Going on a hike, visiting and walking with my horse, playdates with other dogs, visiting the zoo and everything that you wouldn't consider "daily routine" counts as an exercise/concentration phase (and because those activities take much longer than 30mins, I do nothing more with him except for toilet walks if necessary) . I know that other border collie owners do far more with their dogs, but I also know how tired our dog is after every exercise. He is still a teenager and acts like one, but all in all, he is a very calm bc who quickly relaxes in almost any situation.

Omg THIS. We have just adopted an 18 month old border collie who seems very much like yours - very energetic and eager, yes, but knows how to relax and honestly spends most of his day happily napping or just chilling out. We take him on 3 walks a day of varying lengths and routes but all adding up to 90-120 minutes thereabouts, that includes cardio playtime too (I.e fetch). He is normally very tired out and contented after a 30-60 min walk and while in the house he is no trouble at all. We’ve never had any problems with him chewing or engaging in destructive behaviours (yet). Whenever we mention to people we have a border collie they also look at us with that same expression of uncertainty, like they aren’t sure how we’re able to keep a collie exercised enough, but it very much is quality over quantity and a dog trainer we are working with told us that. Like you (and this video)say, it’s very much about mental stimulation as much as physical so time isn’t as important as the quality of training and exercise you give them. Compared to what I read on the internet about collies being hard work, so far we’ve found ours to be an absolute joy and I wouldn’t want anyone to be put off from adopting a collie. You just have to pick one with the right temperament (as all of them are individuals after all) and be ready and willing to make the time for them.

About 30-40 minutes at each end. Hes super calm during the day when I work, its the end of the day post his evening walk till he goes to sleep where he's most animated. I think perhaps I need to do some of these, all he wants to do is chase and fetch from about 7pm to 9pm.... will give these a try thank you.

i train a few minutes at a time, because time limits…this made me feel better. i do take my BC to run and fetch 2-3 times per day…this is her minimum, she’s 15 mo old. i’m still struggling with her knawing, nibbling, not bite but closing too hard on my hands….she’s very sound sensitive, so i keep my no firm but not loud, it annoys her to not be in charge, i see it all as a rebellion….she’s getting better, but if she amps up with this push back, it can get waaay over the inappropriate line, lunging, barking, it’s a tantrum. i’ve blocked myself away from her if i didn’t get her leash line on, if she has a leash i walk her to a room i use as a nap room where i could work and the puppy was safe, usually she climbs into the bed and falls asleep. do you think i’m on the right track?

My rescue dog acts bc but doesn't have all the classic features.If he doesn't get long walk, car ride or sitting on the front porch he is a chewing maniac. stuffed a tennis ball into a plastic mayo jar which kept him busy for months throwing, sticking nose in,paw in, throwing and pawing. Gave the rope toys a break as he will unravel them in 25min, not chew, unravel. He also took the clips off the big dogs crate and ate them so used zip ties to put it back together so I could contain him after he broke most of the welds on the metal crate. Today he ate the zipties so again can't use the crate. He also figured out how to open sliding doors. Doesn't like any restraint on big dog incl tags on collar, look like braille from his chewing them, chewed 3 leashes for big dog into 1 in bits, use one leash on both taking turns so far he isn't chewing it. Makes me play tug even when feeling very weak, then he lays on his side and tugs. this dog has 5 nylabones, 3 rubber toys and 4 tennis balls ( he hides them, but gets them if asked). I need more puzzle ideas for him

I’ll think about doing that! I’m thinking about doing a series on tricks so will consider this! In the meantime, start by getting your dog comfortable standing and walking on the treadmill when it’s off first. Then put it on the very lowest speed and using a harness that you can grip from the back gently encourage them to walk on then off. You will increase these intervals over time. That should get you started. Don’t ever force it and make it fun. 🤩

It just really depends on the particular dog. For my dogs that would be too long, especially for Keegan. When I worked full time at television stations, I had an Australian Shepherd Husky cross who had unending energy. He did adapt to my working schedule. In the morning we walked and in the evening we would walk or do agility or whatever dog class he was in. I used to say he had a better social life than I did! My evenings were about him! But I also had a border collie lab cross who struggled very much to cope with a full work day and would panic and destroy things, even from inside his crate.

It sounds like your dog is pretty active and honestly crate time can be really valuable to busy border collies. As much as we want them to have exercise, they also sometimes need to be taught to relax. I actually put my young dog Skene in his crate in my car sometimes for nap time! Border collies sometimes don't have an "off button" but they can be taught to calm themselves. Using a crate with something to chew (bone, bully stick, Himalayan chew etc) when you can't be there can get your dog in a better pattern where he doesn't have the option to nip. The border collie I grew up with herded me too! They truly benefit from rest and quiet time. Even if he resists at first, you can make the crate a fun and positive place. If you do a google search on crate games there are lots of ways to help dogs love their crates. The other idea is boundary games which are similar to crate games. Reward your dog for being on a boundary, whether it be a dog bed, couch, a mat - any type of place the dog can sit in one place. You can do this while you are getting dinner ready, for example. Put the mat in the kitchen and reward the dog for staying on the mat. I will try to do a video on this topic in the future. It really does sound like your dog mostly needs more calm/rest time from what you describe. Good luck!

Hello, we adopted a border collie. He is 1,5 yo we are his 4 rd owner. And he is new with us. We are taking him to walks 3-4 times a day and training him at least 10 minutes a day. Nothing serious just trying to bond and giving him treats if he waits us when we are walking or sit wait commands etc. Waiting for him to trust us and feel secured before letting him socialize and get and fetch etc. He also bites when we play tug. Plus he has seperation anxiety. Anyway he is still really energetic and wants to do stuff and chews everything he can find. We dont know what to do to keep him occupied...

Calm time is important for our BC's as well. Things like frozen stuffed kongs or West Paw Toppls in a contained area - crate, x-pen - or on a boundary can be very good for relieving stress and creating calm. So if he is getting exercise and training, then calm time with something safe to chew can also be very important. Also nipping can mean they are getting overstimulated and that it's probably time to do calmer activities.

I don't think that's a great idea, I'm sorry to say. They, as the lady said, have a busy mind, and they just desperately need an occupation. It would be like putting a very smart person in with a class of toddlers, they'll have every little thing figured out by the time you leave the garden and they'll be bored. And a bored collie is a naughty collie, a naughty collie is an inconvenient collie and that unfortunately quickly becomes a shelter collie.

How do you teach a dog to walk/run on a tread mill?
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 3 жыл бұрын
Start with the treadmill not on and get the dog familiar walking on from behind and exiting at the front. Use treats to encourage. Take a lot of time with that part. When the dog is fully happy to walk on the treadmill when it's off, then start it at the very lowest level. I use a harness with a back handle and help my dog on and walk him through to the end and off, treating at the end. Do it just once or twice, 3 times maximum and end it on a happy note. After your dog seems totally confident and happy with this step, then you can see if your dog will stay on it continuously. Let your dog decide how slowly or quickly to progress. Don't bring up the speed until your dog is totally confident with the lowest speed and take your time with each step. I might do a video on this since I've been asked a few times now. :)

Also you can check for groups on Facebook that give opinions about breeders. Currently there is a group called "fact or fiction: uncensored opinions of breeders". Groups like that can be helpful for learning about breeders in your specific area and also some breeders you may want to avoid.

If they aren’t trained and exercised properly, they will bite you, children, and attack other animals on top of destroying everything in sight. They will tear through dry wall. If you’re a kid expecting getting a puppy and it’ll be a fun time, then don’t get a dog at all. I would recommend getting a different breed if you want the dog because it’s cute, because that’s not what you’ll think when it’s biting and chewing everything. So unless you’re prepared to work your ass off all day long and do the proper research, don’t get a collie. They need someone who understands what they need.

I got a 4 month old border collie puppy after losing my rescue collie I had for 14 years and this puppy will not exercise themselves. Like my last dog would burn off some energy running off leash and in the garden. This puppy has zero interest in running in the garden and when you put her on a long leash she just kinda walks around or she'll just make a dead stop if something catches her attention that she can't get to. So to use up her exercise its literally all day every day having to work to burn off her energy. If anyone has any tips on how to get a collie to exercise even a bit that does not require you to be constantly doing it yourself that would be awesome

Walks don't do jack for tiring out a Border Collie. They are obsessive weirdos who need a job to do which involves either trotting all day long (i.e. working on a farm) or anaerobic exercise, also known as "playing" - Frisbee, running after a ball, swimming, etc. Chews - good quality ones which help clean her teeth and give her an outlet for chewing; this will also help when she's teething, which you're about to experience with her. Make it so that she works for food - freeze wet food in a Kong, put all her kibble into various puzzle toys, etc. Your dog's energy & endurance level will only go up from here. Doggie daycare can be a great option as well, if you find one which is well staffed and has a low dog to handler ratio. They need MENTAL and physical activity, mate. If you don't give them tasks to do they will find something to destroy or bark at or become neurotic messes because they have no outlet for all that energy. This your first year with this dog - finding ways to leave her alone shouldn't be your focus. Instead, put the effort in NOW to train, exercise, & bond with your friend. She's 4 months old, mate. She's a baby. B.C.'s can make amazing companions, but they are not low maintenance. Find out what yours is obsessed with - there is always something, whether it be herding, frisbee, or balls.

@@zoebradley9069 yeah, sorry If my comment came off slightly weird. I do know collies are high maintenance. As I said I had one for 14 years, and she was in a really bad state when I rescued her and took loads and loads of work so I wasn't looking for a dog that will happily laze around or anything if I was I wouldn't have got a collie. I've always been into training, agility and I trained my last dog alongside a service dog I trained to give her something to focus on as well as the physical biking and going on hikes etc. My point with the comment was more along the lines of my new puppy wont take interest in the things I would usually use. Like puzzle toys and chews even if you use food to try to make it more enticing. And like she loves playing fetch but only in my house and garden, if I take the ball out into fields and stuff where theres more room she just kind of ignores it and when I refer to any way of the dog entertaining themselves for a bit I literally mean to entertain herself while I'm doing simple things like making dinner and cleaning not like leaving her alone for hours because she shadows me everywhere and like luckily my work allows me to keep my own dog busy too but just to keep her busy for like half an hour a day just to do housework I have to bring my nabours dog over (with their permission of course) to play with her and even then she still tries to constantly get my attention Hopefully that cleared up what I meant, maybe?

@@acemackenzie9538 Oh! Apologies, I misunderstood. I had something similar hapoen when my 17 year old BC passed and I got a new puppy. I ended up raising 2 puppies in less than a year. Couple things that worked for my floofs: -My newer pup wasn't food motivated at all either until I switched to a raw diet, which may not be possible for you but is definitely worth mentioning since you said your new girl isn't necessarily into chewing? Giving her a thawed oxtail or lamb shank occasionally, for instance, is super nutritious and smells like crack cocaine to them. So if you have to rely on tripe & other such disgusting smelling foods to get her attention, whatever works. -Incorporate training into the process of what you need. You want to be able to have a bit of quiet time whilst knowing she's okay, aye? Well, training a pup to "Go to bed!" And "Stay" or "Wait" can achieve what you want. If you start small, with short durations (as in 10 seconds may be where you begin), lots of treats, & keep it fun, they will think of it as work and normally be into it. YMMV, obviously, and every puppy has different motivations, but once you find their hook and get them on board you should see some results. -Also, there's no shame in giving yourself a little break. If you're able to have a walker or trainer come and work with your pup a couple of times a week or take her to day care at all, it can be a great way to simultaneously work on socialization, get her used to other people and dogs, and give you a bit of time off. Anyway, I hope any of this helps. I know how insomnia inducing the first few months of having a Border Collie is, especially when you have to teach them how to dog. My pup Artemis is only really motivated by play - when she's excited she give a sh!t about treats or food in general.

One thing with my young border collies is that they sometimes get overtired but don't know how to shut themselves off. So when I know they've eaten, pottied, had water, had exercise etc and if they can't settle I will put them in a crate or a restricted area. Not as punishment but as a "chill out" area. You can also do crate games to make a crate a fun place for your dog if she isn't used to it. Teaching them to settle actually can really help them learn to calm themselves. (Even if at first it doesn't seem like they want to.)

I have learned that sometimes you have to teach them to relax because it doesn't always come naturally. I have one that finds it very hard to settle. Boundary games help.

Mine used to be like that. We'd so everything together and I'd train him and walk him, play ball, frisbee, agility, just so that he doesn't twitch funny.

If you can't spend time with your dogs daily, you really shouldn't have a dog. They need a lot of stimulation and they enjoy the time with you. Its only fair to give them what they need.

George Christofi yes - sure there are times when we all get busy - but I absolutely agree. Dogs are cute and (sometimes) cuddly but they have needs of their own. Many a day I have not felt like training or walking but it’s not just about me. Dogs teach you that! 🙂

You nailed it. Most people only think about the cute, fluffy puppy, and their needs. I probably spend 5-7 hours a day, playing/training/walking, for the first 6 months when I get a new puppy. Now, I am in a position where I'm around all day, every day. Even half that time daily could make for an amazing dog, and you don't have to do it forever. Just long enough to build the bond/trust, and reinforce acceptable behaviors. Once they're trained, or the bond/trust is established, you can set your daily routine. How ever you do it, stay consistent and patient. That's the key.
