I started with FireRed back in like 2006 or so. Went backward to Gold after that and it was so good

Guilty ! Got Blue + silver at the same time, enjoyed both as the very first pokemon games i've played. OG stuff both 1st & second gen.

My first was Red/Blue but Gold/Silver was more enjoyable, idk if it because I was a couple years older and could understand the game more as a child vs getting red/blue at age 7. Silver specifically was my cartridge cause Lugia was the man back then with his aesthetic etc but I slept on Ho-oh, didnt realize that was the legendary pokemon Ash saw in the beginning of the anime. Nowadays I might go Gold if it came out now lol Ho-oh was a beast, I remember fighting a buddy with the link cable and realizing it.😂 speaking of the link cable, kids are missing out on that these days. Connecting that cable and having classmates around watching it like a kids gladiator match is a memory that can't be replaced.

Gold /silver were also great because you can catch the other legendary as well in both games its possible to get ho oh and lugia
