Jumping spiders are some of the most adorable animals on the planet, and they make great pets to! They are very simple and easy to keep and they are fun to watch and feed. In today's video I'm going to be talking about how to care for jumping spiders. I am talking more specifically about phidippus regius though, so some aspects may be slightly different from any other species of jumping spider. Remember that I am not an expert so to do your own research as well when getting a new pet and if you do decide to keep jumping spiders, enjoy!

I like to see people suggesting larger enclosures. They are small spiders, but they're very visual and love to explore! They are so much more inquisitive than tarantulas. I think part of the fun of owning one is putting together an enclosure. You can go natural with it, or make it more like a diorama with miniatures and other things. I've seen some lovely fairy gardens and such. They don't care what they're crawling on as long as you're meeting their basic needs! So wander a crafts store and get creative. Just use hot glue if needed, and wash stuff off first.

I 100% agree with you. They may be tiny indeed but oh how they love to explore! I've recently moved her into a 20x20x30cm exo terra enclosure and she's been using every bit of her enclosure. She's so curious and inquisitive about everything and must check out everything she sees. I've also noticed that the bigger the enclosure the more active they get. I'd say that for jumping spiders bigger is always better.

@@greensapling342 I've had my jumping spider for about 6 weeks. She almost never comes out of her nest. Do you think she might be unhappy? She was so skinny when I got her, her butt was almost as thin as her legs. She ate 4 crickets in 6 days, and is now plump. But she barely even comes out even to eat. She hasn't eaten in almost a week, and I put three very small crickets in her enclosure this morning. She came out and looked, then backed up into her nest and hasn't come more than half way out of her nest all day. Kind of worried about her.
@greensapling342
@greensapling342 3 жыл бұрын
@@stormdancer0 if she's eating consistently now at a healthy size then I wouldn't be too worried about her. If she doesn't come out then it could just be a personality issue. Some spiders like my male just have timid/shy personalities and don't like leaving their nest often. If she doesn't eat very well then try tong feeding her to make sure she gets something every once in a while. Additionally I've found that sunlight is like magic for these guys so if she still doesn't eat then place the enclosure where there is sunlight for a little bit and try again. Make sure the enclosure doesn't overheat if you choose to do this.

I suddenly found a jumping spider roaming my roof a couple of days ago! As I live in Norway, and its still winter here, I am very concerned about it not getting enough to eat, especially since it seems like all the tiny, black midges living off my house plants just seemed to mysteriously vanish all of a sudden (now I know why)... I actually read about how to keep jumping spiders last summer, but I had too many projects, and then all of a sudden winter was here again. So now I'm gonna message the friends I have that might have a fruit fly infestation going (although, those guys seem to disappear even inside during the winter - however annoyingly impossible they seem to be to exterminate during the summer). I'll also call a shop tomorrow that might know people who might have small enough food insects. I am crossing my fingers and hope that I can save my new housemate before he starves to death!

I came across one the other week which was a real spinout, since I'd been watching so many videos about jumping spider's lately. And I hadn't seen one in real life for over 20yrs...I wanted to keep him/her but I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I played with him for a while and of course took photos and a few videos. I've no idea of the type, but he/she was brown with darker brown and black spots and lines. Oh and had a little pair of dark purple fangs...I absolutely love jumping spider's, they're just so adorable 💖🕷️☮️

@greensapling342
@greensapling342 4 жыл бұрын
Wow that is a pretty cold house! Do you have to wear a coat inside the house or something when it gets that cold? Anyway if it does get that cold I suppose you can use a heat mat attached to a thermostat to help keep your spider warm. Remember that if you do use a heat mat a thermostat is essential to avoid it from overheating. Also I'm not exactly sure about this myself to be honest so I would recommend asking on reptile/exotics or arachnid forums, reddit or discord for some more information

So I was in the bathroom and yeah, I was sitting on the toilet. I saw something out of the corner of my eye that caught my attention. It was a spider and like I have always done, I grabbed a piece of toilet paper and I was fixing to smash it. The spider just stood there stating at me. Now I don't like spiders and it might be cause I was bitten by a Brown Recluse when I was little. I almost lost a big chunk of meat out of my arm due to that bite. Anyways, I'm not scared of them and I'll even go as far as to leave the jumping spiders alone in the windows. This little spider that was staring at me, I put my glasses on and saw it was indeed a tiny jumping spider. It was little and like it just went off on its own for the first time. Anyway I stuck my hand down and I just knew it was going to fly off at any second, but no it didn't. This spider crawled on my hand and even let me take a short video of him or her. I sent the video to my wife and she replied " GROSS "!!! Well I was done and was fixing to get up, I let my hand back down and it jumped off at lightning speed. I knew they were fast, but this surprised me. A little while later I went back I to the bathroom and the little spider came back out too me. I never even thought that they would do that. Crazy, so I filmed another video of it on my arms and sent it to my wife. She was NOT impressed at all. I just said I think I found a friend. She said that if she saw it, it would be dead. So now I have to figure away to show her that he doesn't bite and will come and go on its own terms. Pretty cool and I enjoyed every second of that interactionn.....

I would be a bit careful about feeding wild insects as they may be unclean or carry harmful pests, but if she's a wild spider you caught I would think it should be fine. It's what she would eat in the wild (or in your room) afterall. Just make sure you don't feed her anything that might hurt her such as beetles or ants

@greensapling342
@greensapling342 3 жыл бұрын
If buying food isn't an option then I guess you could catch some moths, crickets or flies (maybe not flies as in the wild they can be quite dirty)? I would try to get captive bred insects as wild caught could contain parasites or have something which could be harmful for the spider but if not then those three would probably be your best bet. Try looking around and calling local pet stores if they have any feeder insects for sale, or maybe even some garden centres. Best of luck to you and your spider :)

PLEASE HELP ME - I have a jumping spider, named Spooder. I got a great enclosure for her, planted grass and put in large sticks for her to jump to. I can't get her to eat. Our local pet supply store, they don't have any small crickets. I tried ants, stink bugs, and meal worms. She won't eat any of them. What do I do???
@greensapling342
@greensapling342 4 жыл бұрын
There's a few things I tried to get my spiders to eat if they refused meals for too long. 1.Kill the prey before offering it to them 2.I heard green bottle blue flies are their favorite so try that 3.Put the enclosure under natural sunlight for a little bit then try feeding them. This has been the most effective method for me surprisingly Also be careful with any insects that can fight back in any way like ants. Good luck with her and tell me if it works!

I have been reading about these guys and on a website about caring for them, this guy said that he's had to troubleshoot for people who had a lot of spiderlings dying because they wouldn't eat. Light is very important to them. When they added light for them they would eat. So if you are keeping them in a darker or dimly lit room, try moving them to a room that get a lot of natural light or get a LED for them.
@greensapling342
@greensapling342 3 жыл бұрын
@@gabriellas2325 I agree with you Gabriella, my spiders certainly seem to only under eat when there is a light either in the form of LEDs or even better when under natural sunlight. I think it's because they rely heavily on eyesight to hunt and I'm pretty sure they are a diurnal species as well (only active during the day)
