I'm an old country girl. I used to do this, until a kind older gentleman told me a better way with rocks. Rocks has worked well for me for 20 years. Works to keep coons/possums/coyotes out of chicken coops, too. Get a bag of river rock, about 30 pounds. Put the bag on the ground right up against the fence. Leave it in the bag. You can target areas, or just go around the entire fence. If they dig into the plastic bag, rocks will come out. You can also use rocks to fill any existing holes, just make sure you have a full bag on top. It'll stop the digging in/out for years!

Any ideas on alternatives for rock with the same setup? I’ve seen these before, but my current pup has an issue chewing on rocks that he can get ahold of, and I’m worried about injuries if I use rocks large enough he can’t pick up

I use the large blocks from Lowes or from Facebook Marketplace around the perimeter of the fence. That usely deters them unless they decide to scale or jump over the fence.

I am not sure if cinnamon is not good for dogs but I do know, based on my personal experiences with five dogs, that cinnamon does work 100% for me. I pour it generously everywhere the dog has dug, they sense it from afar and never touches it again. They even walk away from the area when they get near it. Yes you do have to put it out again if it rains. The dollar store sells large bottles much cheaper. Black pepper and cayenne pepper do not work for me. I even grind cinnamon sticks in a blender and use those. Cinnamon sticks have also worked for moles when I stick them down in the mole hole path.... in which my dogs love to dig up moles. The cinnamon sticks seems to deter moles as well. If you don't want to use cinnamon, keep rose clippings with thorns and put them everywhere the dog lays in your garden and they definitely don't like it. For those people that say the if the dog exercises, it will deter digging..... Not true, my five dogs live on large acre farm and play and run continuously. But my cure is cinnamon personally. I have never seen anything that works this good. It doesn't hurt my plants and also makes the outside smell so good.

Love your Video. We do this on the farm. Much less expensive than any other way and a great way to use up panels the cows or horses have bent. One Difference, with the chain link, I dont tie up with fence wire anymore. I use the steel zip ties with the tails turned to the out side. They are super easy and not near as sharp. We have Heelers and Aussies. If you dont keep them up when they're not working, they will get into trouble. They're also escape artists. Mine easily "unzip" chain link dog kennels. They'll work one piece till it comes loose at the bottom then pull it to creat a hole.... Using the pieces of cattle panel and leaving in up a couple feet puts an end to digging and unzipping!

We used cattle panels to make a 32 sq ft fence in the backyard for our Golden, so we don't always have to walk him. He's there to eat, I scatter his food for meals, to self exercise before bed, and for potty breaks. Sometimes he hangs out there while I walk horses. But otherwise he's with us, or on/off leash. He's never tried to dig out. No reason to. Just gives us a break now and then. Oh, he taps the gate when he's ready to come in, it jiggles the lock and dings. I'm well trained. 😂

If they are digging under a gate you can dig a trench big enough to bury some brick or block then a few inches under the ground. When they dig they will hit brick. You gave me a new idea. I could get some 12" rebar space about 6 inches apart and drive them under the gate.

Im looking for something like this to keep my rat terriers from digging under the fence and escaping to my neighbor's yard again (Im amazed they were able to work together to roll away the large stone id place over the areas they dugged under) I was going to use hardware cloth because of the small squares, but according to this video, it wont work. Hopefully I can find cattle panels with smaller openings. I appreciate this brilliant idea!

Thank you Stonnie Dennis, it is very important for a dog to not get out of anyone's yard, they are a huge liability and can get you into some serious trouble. Especially pitbulls, I have one fixed. Its important that everyone's infrastructure is correctly setup, i have some neighbor's that have some dogs, but no fence, and man that is scary. I own 1.1 acres of land and i cannot stress on having a proper fence. If anyone is reading this please realize that its a very serious thing to have a dog, and that they require a enormous amount of attention and require you to spend money on stuff you never thought of you had to, like maintaining a fence, equipment to fix the fence, a proper setup or a gated off portion temporarily hold your dogs in when you have guests, inspecting your fence periodically, inspecting your dogs health, spending money on quality food for a dog to improve its mood/behavior, lots of research and time, lots of miscellanious stuff you dont think of, its like its own hobby that you have no choice to participate on once your in it, and you cant set it down for a minute. It becomes a extension to your life. Also I have to think of having kids over, pitbulls are very strong any little bump they get you with and they can seriously knock someone down, aka a lawsuit. Pitbulls/big dogs are like the Diesels of the dog world lots of attention, extra maintenance, everything is more expensive, special tools and equipment, extra everything.

I teach my GSD's to never jump up on you! They should never bring their front paws off the ground. I do this from a young age and no future problems of them trying to negotiate a fence. They have to be taught early its not ok to jump up on anything unless you train them with commands for them to do it.

Love that you even think of crafty dogs who get their heads stuck in between things. Some dogs, man. Then there are Huskies. I'm sorry, Husky owners. Somehow, I doubt any of this will work. There are reasons why even mushers in the Yukon run those dogs for hours on ATV, and still put them in pens or chain them up. They are something all together different, and probably why you never see them at Stonnie's place.

Great idea. Unfortunately, because I live in North East Pennsylvania, there is more rock in the ground than dirt. Just putting in a single tee post is a nightmare. I had to buy a 1/2" hammer drill to pre drill for each post. One of my dogs is a single focus, absolute target oriented 100% determined missle. After 3 years she finally figured out how to dig out. She will probe for the soft spots. I might try this but I don't have faith it will work as I've tried tent stakes for sections between tee posts and I bend half of them. We'll see. Thanks for the suggestion.

We have a Pyrenees/Aussie cross who has managed to get under our fence many times. As we have ten acres, the solution you propose here is not possible for us. We resorted to an "invisible fence" in addition to the regular fence, but today, he managed to get out somehow and the zapper part of his special collar is missing. We have found that his wanderlust seems to get worse the more we take him off the property for walks. We even got him another dog to be his playmate, and they have rabbits and squirrels to chase, etc. She never follows him when he escapes, but instead comes to the house, very upset, to let us know that he is gone. Perhaps worst of all, if I see him outside the fence when I go looking for him, he will look right at me then take off at high speed. He always comes back eventually, but it is dangerous for him to be out there, and he has attacked a neighbor's dog as well, so he is a danger to others. We got this dog from a rescue and believe his previous owners gave up on him for this very issue. We are at our wits' end!

If you're still having trouble with your escape artist, what my farmer relatives did with wanderlust was put a chain as a 10' to 20' leash on the dog's collar or harness and attached an old mower tire and a short, scrap lumber piece to the other end so it gets caught on the fence and the dog gets stuck because of the "anchor" objects. They used a chain so the dog couldn't chew through a regular leash. Alternatively, I think on a different video or a newer comment on this one, you could attach two milk crates to the other end of the long leash. Good luck!

Great video! We have neighbors that border our yard with vinyl fencing on two sides which leaves nice gaps in uneven ground. Since we can't attach anything to it my husband borders with huge rocks. Their dogs try to get in our yard. The aggressive dog behind us jumps just higher than the 6ft fence, you see his head up and down, and body slams it. Seems we're always left trying to protect our goldens from a neighbors dog. I have kennels out back which we were going to remove. Now my dogs need to be in them to protect them from the crazy pit in case it crashes through the lightweight vinyl fence. Sigh, neighbors
@angelsong119
@angelsong119 Жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, we too, have vinyl fencing around our yard. We also have a neighbor with a crazy pittie who smashes against the fence. What a small world. I have 2 questions with different scenarios for both. Scenario #1. the fence belongs to your neighbors. If this is the case they obviously don't value the fence. Have you approached them about what is happening and that you are very concerned about your dogs being harmed? If you have and they don't care, I would seriously consider putting up your own fence (even as modest as chain link or plastic netting) alongside theirs. In doing this you will have the legal right to install electric fencing along the bottom of the fence line (where there are open spots) on the side facing theirs. Electric wiring can also be strung across the top of your fence so that the crazy dog will catch his chin on it and be immediately deterred. If this beast continues to hurl itself against the fence and damages yours...this is when the rubber will hit the road and your neighbors will have to be responsible for their dog. Scenario #2 the fence belongs to you and the neighbors dog is eventually going to bring it down. This happened to me. I immediately went next door and explained what the dog had been doing. What damage the dog had done and just how this problem was going to be taken care of. We were going to have a new fence installed soon and I wanted them to know that any damage done was going to be trouble. They were very responsive to my words and immediately installed an electric fence less than 6 inches from their existing fence and within 2 DAYS their dog stopped all of its misbehavior. Pitties are known for being very stubborn. Goldens are known for being lovers. Now, my dogs are able to live in peace and I know that they are safe in their own yards. As it should be ❤

I use rocks to cover holes my dog digs up. I use rocks no smaller than the size of your hand when you have it open. A rock that size would weigh about 7-12 lbs (rough estimate). My mother told me about the drawback that insects and other pests may hide in it. To solve that, dig a shallow trench, about as deep as the rocks' height when placed on the fround. This will prevent pests from hiding in between the rocks. The next step is bury the rocks. Use your weight and jump on top of the buried rocks to compact the dirt. I observed my dog when he tried to dig and i noticed he stopped once he hit the rocks. After that, i kick the dirt back over the expised rocks and repeat the compact. Chances are high the dog wont dig in the same place. The hard part is finding rocks. I recommend this if you are on a budget and/or lack the right tools.

My dog would just make a hole in the wood above it to escape. She just learned this at 1.5 years old. Ugh! And yes she go for walks and runs with me etc. German Shepherd Rott Grain Dane Mix. My Belgian Malinois who could jump a 6 foot fence and loves to dig holes in the MIDDLE of the yard stays in the yard and when the other escapes she comes to the front door to tell me. Ugh. More training for the yound one. But this is a good idea. I just need smaller holes she can't squeeze through she does chew on the lower half .... right now.

I like this idea, neighbors dogs had recently dug under the fence so there is a considerable gap. The only downside is Im not sure how to attach the cattle fence to vinyl

Great idea. Now, how do you get a shih tzu from squeezing through that anyway?

Here's the crazy story. I've had my dog for 11 years with no issue. He has a great life with plenty of walks. My sister's crazy Jack Russell came over and dug out of the backyard, and my dog followed. They went on to menace the neighborhood for a few minutes, and he's been doing it ever since

I have a puppy 6months old, she has just started this, it doesn’t matter if I’m with her. I haven’t been able to garden while she’s outside recently. The only problem with this solution is she is digging underneath the door of the fence, it’s worse when we just finished a nice walk, she gets so excited and doesn’t understand how dangerous it is, when she’s outside alone, I keep a low window open to my room so she can come in and go as needed. Any tips

i tried this and just my luck my boxer and bernedoodle just dug deeper my boxer got out but my bernedoodle got her collar stuck on the stake end and freaked out giving her self a big gash on the beck of her neck and a few poke holes and a $400 vet bill,. So what i had to do was dig a trench and bent them into a 90 degree angle like a big L sape flipped sideways and come 2 1/2 feet away from the fance taking it to the bottom of the fence and using u nails to take it to the fence post it worked they will still dig between the squares but they cant get out its still an option if your dogs tend to be like mine and can still use the same pannels doing it your way without having to purchase more. tho your method worked for my jack/corgi it did not for my boxer and bernedoodle

Stonnie, what dog do you recommend for someone who loves English or American black labs but is allergic?

Had a hunting breed, you should have cut the larger squares and maybe go 2 sections deep. I also would have placed staples on each wire across the fence and rotate them 90 degrees or horizontal and vertical at each section but overall good video. Especially the beginning about giving your dog attention and exercise.

You should definitely make a video showing your technique. I’ve seen this one used for twenty years, but I’m anxious to see all the improvements people keep recommending. Be sure to post a link when you get it uploaded.

One of my dogs (I have 6) a German Shepherd, border Collie cross, can climb the 8 foot tall fence of their compound which is approximately 3,000 square feet of space, with trees, and a large shed with a straw covered floor for the dogs to hide in. I then covered the wire fence it with sheet roofing steel, then I found out he could jump high enough to grab the top and pull himself over. So I had to chain him as well until I figure out what to do. He then began tearing strips off of the sheet steel with his teeth once he had pulled a an edge loose with his claws, then he pulled apart the wire fencing behind it and got out again. My fence now looks like a barricade made from wire, steel sheeting and 3/4" plywood, concrete blocks and large stones, which for the moment have stumped him yet he still tries. I have to repair the fence daily.

For that breed combo, I wonder if making them a treadmill wouldn't be a better idea than fixing the fence daily.

Can you help me make my yard Less of a resort and keep my neighbors husky from digging under the chain link and not kill my chickens. He hadn’t hurt any of my birds, yet. But I’m concerned. Don’t know if construction wire and tarp blinder will be efficient. Thank you.
