I've had a small chicken flock for the last 50 years, and I did not know this! I predict you will do very well with your YT channel... your information is practical and communicated succinctly with a touch of humor! Keep up the good job!

we use kitty litter buckets so we can close the lid. I like your pvc method

That’s a good idea! Thanks for sharing and for watching!

Also set your house up so the hens don't have to walk under their roosting area to get to the nest box. They will get poop on their feet and transfer to eggs.

That’s a good tip! Ours don’t have to go under ours to get to them but we definitely have to keep adding fresh wood chips. In this greenhouse set up for winter it’s a little messier than when we free range them in the spring, summer, fall months.

Ash from firewood makes a good substrate for your chickens to take a dust bath in ,it helps keep down the parasites and mites and keep chickens in better health.

Yes! We just started adding ash and charcoal to our greenhouse coop. You should check out the DIY charcoal video its good for lots of stuff on the farm or homestead! Thanks for watching Jenny, we appreciate your support and feedback!

My parents farmed in VA I think you need warmer areas for your chickens to sleep in. Also chickens feet are flat not curved when they roost. Flat boards are better for them .

Yes that is why we put up this greenhouse. The greenhouse collects sunlight and makes it a lot warmer as well as the slow compost of the woodchips give off heat. It stayed about 20 degrees warmer in the greenhouse than outside when we had temperatures in the negatives! Initially we didn't have enough roosting poles for them but they are good now! All of our roosting poles are rectangular shaped with about a 2" flat they can stand on. Thank you for watching Kayte, we appreciate you!

i SAW A VIDEO THt said their roosts have to be higher than their nesting boxes. She said they will sleep at the highest spot. Don't know if it's true and don't know how high your roosts are, but if they are low, you might try it.

Ours are higher than their nesting boxes. I think this time it was because I didn’t have enough pole the first week, so they had no room to roost. I added another pole and closed the boxes and they have already stopped nesting in them.🙌🏼

did you save the other part of the lids? that could be used also
@easyworkacres Жыл бұрын
No I was able to cut bottom edges off of a single lid so all the was left was a sliver. Plywood worked though and they have stopped sleeping in the boxes!

put straw in the nesting boxes.

Hey Betty! We’ve tried it before. We’ve found wood chips is the only thing they don’t scrape completely out of the box in a day. And we have an endless amount of them on hand so it’s more cost effective for us. The eggs still come out clean with wood chips
