I use essential oils from Aldi in and around the coop. Just a few drops in the nesting box and around the coop, and then a few outside. I get whatever is on sale, but my favorites are mint/eucalyptus ones and citrus ones.

If I were to use the clothespin could I use cedarwood oil?
@MeyerHatchery Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! We do not recommend using Cedarwood oil, as it is an irritant to their respiratory systems, and could cause problems with your chickens heath.

@@MeyerHatchery would tea tree be okay or should I just go with oil of oregano?
@MeyerHatchery Жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy! Thanks for asking about these oils. Tea Tree oil is safe to use around chickens or topically, but they should not ingest it. Oregano oil is a safe option to use around your chickens and you may find some feed and flock blocks include oregano or oregano oils for the added health benefits.

Thanks for these helpful tips! I love the clothespin with lavender oil idea! Would the scent of real vanilla extract added to the clothespin work or is it only the artificially fragranced car air fresheners that repel the flies? Right next to my chicken run, I have a good sized garden bed of mint that I planted once and have been unsuccessful in my attempts to remove. I’m so excited to find out that I can use the mint clippings to help freshen up the coop!!

Thanks for your question! You can use real vanilla extract on the clothespin to help repel the flies. And I'm happy that we were able to help you find a new use for your mint!
