TIPS from Berta Jay's
-----------------------------------------------------
1. Store potatoes in a container with an apple and they will last longer
2. Juice the lemons and limes; then, store the juice in ice cube trays for later use
3. DEBBIE MEYER'S GREEN BAGS - use for storing fresh produce
-----------------------------------------------------
My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.
For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.
I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

Berta: Apples produce ethylene gas which keeps potatoes from sprouting. It also helps other fruits ripen. 😀👍👍

I must admit, I am humbled by your kind words, John. My Pastor has taught our church that being genuine is more important than being popular; also, that we must be our "real-selves" and not a phony version just to please others. Who you see is really who I am. Thank you for your compliment; I receive it with humility, not pride. I have so many, many things to share; it's nice to hear you are appreciating them and want to see more. That encourages me ;-). Thanks again.

Thank you for the food storage tips. I stopped buying potatoes as they went bad so quickly. I will be using this tip. Now my tips to you. 1.Punch a few holes in lemons and place in a dish then microwave for 5-10 seconds for maximum juice. 2.Soak fruit and vegetables for 5 minutes in a baking soda or vinegar bath when you arrive home and then rinse. It cleanses them and you don’t have to stop to wash each when cooking. This also 🛑 STOPPED my fruit fly issue. Line the storage bag or bowl with paper towel. Love you and continued blessings.

Thanks so much, Annette. I do make a homemade fly trap but I will give your idea a go. It sounds better since I have to wash the fruits and veggies anyway.🥰 I appreciate your love and do receive your blessings. You are an asset to my channel 😀

This is 4 yrs old but YT sends old vids thru ppl’s feeds randomly so I wanted to say Brava on the tips! Never knew abt the apple with potatoes. Another tip abt potatoes is to never store them with onions. ALSO you can keep on counter but not where there’s a lot of light; this is a good tip got ppl who have the “out of sight out of mind” problem. I forget the chemistry abt not storing onions & potatoes together but I’m pretty sure there’s a gas the onions give off that makes both the onions & the potatoes rot rather quickly. Also remember to save some of the zest especially if organic lemons & limes for future use. You can also zest each and put in ice cube trays with a bit of extra virgin olive oil-not much, just a bit of oil but zest can make all the difference in a recipe just as the lemon & lime juice can. These are great tips! Ty for them.

You know, I was just watching the Pear and Banana Deliciousness video, and I was reminded of the lemon juice idea. I've been doing it ever since I watched this video, and everyone in my house loves it. And I'm now reminded of the potato idea, which I'm going to try. One tip for you--to clean off all the nutmeg from the grater, keep a clean toothbrush with it, and it'll help you get every last bit of nutmeg from your tool. Thank you!

Great tips, Berta. I knew the lemon/lime rolling idea, but never heard about adding an apple to when storing potatoes [one of my faves]. That's one I'll have to try. I don't really have a lot of fruits & veggies around for long periods. I try to only buy what I'll need for a week at a time. But sometimes you can get great deals by buying a larger quantity - trips to the farmer's market etc - & these tips will work well for when I do have to store produce. Thanks & take care.

Love the tips! I wondered about those bags, if they really worked or not. I kinda do similarly but I use the white flour sack towels from Wal-Mart to keep things dry. They work amazingly well. I really like them to extent the life of my salad greens. I get an extra week out of them if we haven't eaten it all first. That's a great tip for the citrus too! Time saver!! I need more time!! LOL I try to wash all my produce after bring it home ( except for salad mix I wait until I need it then soak it in salt water to kill any lettuce bugs). I soak in water with a splash of white vinegar. My produce keeps a lot longer by doing it this way. I even do strawberrys this way and they last a lot longer. ( Got that tip from How Jen Does it) I think I got the towel idea from her as well.

I’m the only vegan in the house and I wish they made smaller sizes as well, for berries etc. The large size is great for collard greens which I just started eating. So good, so cheap, and wilts so fast in the fridge if you leave it in the grocery bag. I’m hoping they work well, it seems like most of the reviews on YT are from people who didn’t bother reading the directions.

Hi there, well, I went out today and bought me a canner for my potatoes, lol. It looks like yours and it held all my potatoes. I bought me an apple too! Lol. Hey, hey, Elaine. I didn't say in the video but be sure to keep the potatoes elevated from the bottom of the canner. I put crumpled bags in the bottom because once I didn't eat my potatoes fast enough and they started to leak in the canner. So, the paper bags with a plastic bag/Saran wrap over them is great before you put in your potatoes. It makes for an easy cleanup. About the green bags: I found those at Bed, Bath and Beyond. and the ice trays with lids from Homegoods. Just an idea if you have one of those stores near you. Thanks so much for your comment. Always nice hearing from you, Elaine. 😊 👍🏾

Love all your helpful tips so I am subbing. Ty as I seem to murder veggies daily. Just put them in the crisper to die, LOL. Out of sight out of mind. I bought a set of those plastic containers made to make them stay drier but I don't think the vents are working right because all that precipitation made them die even quicker. I even tried putting napkins layered in like you did. Maybe I needed to do something to the vents to make them open up more? I have no idea.

Since I can't speak from experience of using "vented plastic containers," I would say check the packaging and see what instructions they give. It will give you some understanding about what you're suppose to do as the consumer. Also, you could try their website or contact them by phone and ask. Otherwise, you could just get/use a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid as I did. I hope that helps you.

Great tips. Family and Friends have been giving us more than an abundance of produce at the end of the growing season. I need to get the green bags yesterday. I may have missed it: do you you refrigerate produce such as green beans in the bags? Will also try the potato secret. I may start using Lemon Juice more.
@bertajay
@bertajay 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, L, for your question. I do indeed store green beans and all types of produce in those bags. Be sure to put in a paper towel to trap some of the condensation (water) that forms in the bag. I have also found that a terry cloth dishtowel or wash cloth also works well. Be sure to take out the damp towels and let them dry before placing them back in the green bags. Lemon juice is good for you. It's high in vitamin C. Check this article out, L. Re: Debbie Meyer’s Green Bags. The only plastic recycling that can be done in USA now is at grocery stores where they usually keep a barrel to create more plastic bags. BUT they’re going to be going the way of the dinosaur. Laws are already occurring in many cities. Or you’ll have to pay a surcharge to use. At any rate, when using paper towels it’s great to dry out & reuse if for same food product as you’ve been doing in this & other vids to preserve foods longer. A btr ecological choice tho is to use tea towels. You can buy in large sizes & cut to fit for what you need when preserving veggies & fruits against condensation even in glass containers. You can dry those out too & reuse. Wash by hand if needed. More affordable than using paper towels too in the long run. When washing if you want to keep white, try using Borax rather than bleach. Bleach is carcinogenic.😞 Borax isn’t & you don’t need much. You can also use a little distilled white vinegar to hand wash tea towels; don’t use in washing machine tho bc can corrode rubber gasket. You don’t need much of that by hand either btw.

I so appreciate you! A couple of questions if you don’t mind. Can I store the potatoes in a plastic container with a lid? Do you close the DM bags with a twist tie or anything or just fold over? Thank you.
@bertajay
@bertajay 5 жыл бұрын
Answer 1 about the potatoes: I do NOT believe that potatoes should be stored in a plastic container with a lid. Too much moisture would collect and they would rot quickly. Think about how the grocery stores store their potatoes. Answer 2 about the green bags. Do NOT put a twist tie on the bags. Veggies still need to 'breathe.' If you fold the top over, that will be enough. Let me know if that helps. These two answers are what I use and the life of my produce has been extended.

Potatoes can easily be stored and be fresh for months. Put the potatoes in a cool and dark place and the will keep fresh for months. By cold I mean not too much warmer then in your fridge. If the temp is stable and there ain't no lights they will store well and taste as good as a potato you picked up in the store the day before. Just make sure your temperature never drop below a couple of degrees above freezing, because freezing temps will ruin them. By "growing eyes" I assume you are talking about when the potatoes are growing "roots". I don't know the science behind this but my guess is something to do with the darkness and cold stable temperature will keep the potatoes from getting into the reproducing state.
