I am a senior citizen living on social security. Nothing that I purchase can go to waste. I put packages of baby spinach in the freezer and just take out what I need for a smoothie or to chop for an omlete. I wrap celery in foil after cutting off the end....or chop and freeze. I cut the end off a romaine head... loosen up the leaves and place in plastic containers with a paper towel...I have had it be crisp 3 weeks later. When I buy berries...I freeze them right away. Thanks for these helpful $ saving tips!

Just wanted to let you know. I watched your video a while back, and then tried out your tip for keeping lettuce and celery. All I can say is THANK YOU!! My head of lettuce stayed fresh and green for 5 entire weeks, as I shaved off a little at a time, when I made sandwiches. 5 Entire Weeks! I was struck dumb and I've been telling everyone I see about your tip! The celery tip worked to perfection too. I just can't thank you enough. Boy are you saving me money! :D

@@KitchenTipsOnline You are most welcome. I had despaired on buying lettuce because I just couldn't keep it green, crisp and fresh for more than a few days, and being the only one eating it, it was impossible for me to use much in such a short time. I don't like using the whole leaf. I prefer shaving it so it lays flat on my sandwich bread. I had tried so many other methods and none of them kept it long enough to finish even half the head until I saw your tip and tried it. Now I can't stop telling everyone about it, I am so impressed. I could not let that go without saying a hearty "thank you." Besides, I was brought up to be polite and to give credit where and when credit is due. Have a great day, and a wonderful Christmas! :D

I love these tips. I'm single and I don't go through food that fast and it ends up being thrown out. Which is a crime. It helps a lot especially bread which I don't eat fast enough, same with potatoes and most other veggies. Some stuff I can freeze such as bread and pull out when craving toast. And I've learned that there are many other foods, such as avocados you can freeze. I was skeptical but it works.

I always remove the core of the lettuce by giving it a sharp rap on the counter and pulling it out before putting it in a bag. I also use a plastic knife if I need to cut it as metal makes it go rusty. The lettuce lasts for weeks. Great show. So enjoyable to watch.

After cleaning cilantro and parsley in the salad spinner I put paper towel (usually four in a row still connected) and roll the parsley or cilantro in the paper towel and then put it in a ziplock bag. It will last WEEKS this way. Roll a little bit of parsley or cilantro into the towel then add more and roll on. Keep adding and rolling until all the cilantro/parsley is rolled up in paper towel and then into the ziploc. You will be amazed....I was !

I find that tearing lettuce into nice usable sizes , (never use a knife, scissors etc.) and then placing into a large Zip lock bag, after adding a paper towel at bottom and then at top. I take air out by simply rolling the bag to just leave minimum space for the lettuce. Just a method I use but I can make my lettuce eatable and delicious for close to a month.

I've been using the "human vacuum" method to remove air (just like you demonstrated) for 50 years, ever since one of my friends' father did that to preserve bread in its bag. I started doing it when ziploc bags were invented and it has really helped prolong the life of any food you store that way. I've recently started using one of those hand-held vac sealers with the special ziploc bags and when I do lettuce, I vac just until but before it squeezes the lettuce and this has also worked great. Thanx for the great learning vid!!

Here’s a tip to help all your berries stay fresh longer! When I bring the berries (any & all berries ) home I put them in a bowl covered w/ water and add a splash of white or apple cider vinegar and let sit for ten minutes. Drain and lightly rinse, then let them sit out and air dry for a while. I then put them back into the container they came in or a glass container and put them in the fridge. They will last a good week or two with no mold! 🍇🍓

Here's how I store my lettuce and other veggies and it works great!! After rinsing lettuce I spin it dry and break it into leaves. When I put it in a ziplock bag I add 1/2 of a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture. I do this for all lettuce. For things like peppers that I may have cut up, I also use a 1/2 of a paper towel. I keep an eye on things as I work through my fridge supplies and change the paper towel as it becomes saturated. The build up of extra moisture is what I find makes veggies go bad faster. I have had Romane lettuce stay fresh and crisp for weeks!

I have a tip to share after I've washed my iceberg lettuce and leaf lettuce I wrap them with paper towels and store them in a plastic bag in the fridge. This keeps them very fresh. I also do this with parsley and cilantro.

Thanks Silvana, I appreciate the suggestion. I have to say though it seems like more work than what was suggested in the video, Mike 🙂

Great tip! For years I have had a Tupperware bowl for ages that is designed to store and save iceberg lettuce for at least 3 weeks. It’s one of those items that I never want to get rid of, cuz it really works! But, I have only used it for iceberg lettuce. Will your tip with the ziplock bag work for the pre-mixed, store bought salads?

New subscriber here, and I hope you can use one of my true and tried methods of preserving and storing food longer. Moisture is also the enemy of produce. I wrap my lettuce know matter what kind of lettuce in paper towels, and each time I use my lettuce I make sure my paper towel is dry on my lettuce before putting it back into the refrigerator. If you buy container lettuce, line your container with paper towels, even covering the top, and keep it changed with dry paper towels as you use it. If you cut a cucumber in half to use just part of it, wrap a paper towel over the cut end, then place in the refrigerator in container or ziplock bag. For celery I use a tall yogurt container, cut celery to fit below lid, cover 3/4 way with filtered water, set into refrigerator, change water every 5 days, this will keep your celery crispy. For bananas let ripen enough so it's not green tasting, then place in ziploc bag in your refrigerator, the banana peel will start to turn dark, but the banana inside stays fresh, this stops the banana from turning bad over night, I've had mine last 2 weeks in my refrigerator, only the peel turns dark. I also freeze my bananas out of their peels, break in half in sandwich ziploc bags, add a half of frozen banana to fruit smoothies, bananas should be just ripe, not overly ripened when freezing, or they will turn dark. Also place in deep freezer, not recommended for refrigerator/freezers where they can turn dark. Store potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions in paper bags in cool dark room. The paper bags whisk away moisture and let the vegetables breathe. If you don't have paper bags line a laundry basket that has holes with newspapers. 👍❤💕

This tip isn’t about lettuce, but boiled eggs! To get perfectly boiled eggs. Put your eggs in a pan, cover with cold water put on the stove to cook. Bring them to a rolling boil, cover and remove from heat. Let stand 20 min-and your eggs are perfect! Never green, never running-but just right!!

And to make them easy to peel, plunge them into ice water and let sit for a few minutes. Drain, then peel or store in the fridge. When you're ready to peel them, give a slight crack and the shells should just slide off.

I wrap lettuce in paper towels and put it in a zip lock bag. I have never sucked the air out and it still lasts for a month or more. One other thing that I discovered is that if you cut the lettuce, instead of unwrapping it, from itself, it will spoil a lot quicker.

That makes sense... Drown the gas 😂 or rather allow the gas to rise to the surface & away from the food. Smart!!! 🙏
@lynncarol99344 жыл бұрын
I've veen doing this for years woth lettuce. The only difference is...I buy the plastic bags that don't have the zip lock on the top. I put the lettuce in the bag...suck the air out. Tightly twirl the excess bag at the top and use a bread tie to tie it. I dont just twirl it and tie it. I twirl it and fold the twirled part in half and then put the bread tie. That ensures even more to keep the bag sealed air tight.
