@shelleyparent47292 жыл бұрын
We have put the wire down on the outside of the fence & it works good to keep critters out. Our chickens tunneled their way out, even with the deep bedding. To remedy the issue, we put wire on the ground on the inside of the fence.

Just remember for those who don't know. The further north you go the smaller and ferocious the predators get (like Martins, Weasels, and Shrews) so the smaller gauge openings your wire screens have to be and think of installing a solar electric barrier. Plus buried screens on the entire inside of the run as well for the shrews their like little land sharks. Lost a litter of rabbits to one of these tiny terrors here in Southern IL. 😣🤛😉

Once he achieves all of his building projects, the hard work begins: successful, challenging, exhilarating and heartbreaking, soul nourishing homesteader lifestyle with the long view in mind. All the best to Gary & thanks, Doug, for sharing this.

Love the channel. I ended up trenching about 18inches of fencing around my coup to stop predators- A really great idea. Now if I could keep the bear paws from ripping my 1/2 hardware cloth :) So far I have had a 100% survival rate. Thanks for all the ideas you put out.

Maybe create a molasses lick somewhere long apart from your coop. Using sorghum molasses (probably cheaper) it's stinky, sticky and sweet. Put a post in the ground, nail a leaning board to it with 3 sided boxes to hold the treat to the board. Might work. I know bears can smell better than a fox, a peanut butter jar inside a zip-lock @ 2 miles away.

@@vpbanjo for a bear deterrent ? I don't know where you're at, but dogs don't do much to ward off bears in Michigan if they're hungry, especially a sow with cubs. Bears and cougars eat dogs. Better off just putting up a band of hot wire and turn it on at night.

For cutting the tin i used a metal cutting blade in a circular saw, i started with the cutting wheel but went through them too quickly. We were redoing our building and each piece had to be cut. Then we moved from Florida to Missouri and i talked to my old neighbor and he said the new people haven't done anything on it. We had bought new sheets of metal and the frame for the structure also 2 walk doors. Oh well

Do people ever just line the entire bottom/ inside of a chicken enclosure with small holed wire (hardware cloth) and attach it to the bottom wood frame....to keep predators from burrowing down from the outside and coming up through the inside?? Would that be a solution to lay down wire/hardware cloth on the inside??? Wow, finished product is a very nice build (the large enclosure)!!! And the smaller A-frame structures are cool too! Thanks for sharing these great ideas for chicken coops/enclosures. 👍😊

I am only on a half acre BUT I built a 10x26 leanto put hardwire all around the walls with over hanging metal roof and even ran electrical to it, I raise my meat Cornish cross in there, have my hens in a 10x20 run also covered with hard wire and since run kinda chintzy I dug up 3 feet all around laid hardwire down and covered back up so nothing can dig into my hens. Use rest of back yard for my garden, started with 7 above ground beds,20 wicking tubs and 20 grow bags, 3 45lb tubs for potatos, husband said getting me more above ground beds and I am all for it 😁 I asked for pvc pipes to run water to all my above ground beds to make life easier. No bees seen or butterflies not sure what’s up with that so I am running around every morning pollinating my squash and zucchini’s, not sure why my onions are all falling over way to early no biggie still able to eat fresh and dehydrate, will amend soil with my rabbit compost and black cow and replant. Even if you just have a back yard ask yourself can you eat grass? How important is that grass when no food or to high to afford? Get it going folks unless your 500lbs and can try to survive for 95-130 days on that padding b4 your able to harvest? Good luck
