That story means a lot to me. I had the same kind of experience growing up. A couple, who were family friends (Jack and Nina) would take me fishing twice a month from age 7 or 8 until I was grown. I thought the world of them. He was a truck driver and would come by and pick me up to work in the shop if he was rebuilding a big diesel engine or even just doing maintenance. I was 18 when my dad died and they were right there doing whatever they could. Mom couldn't stay in the house and he loaded her stuff on a 40' flatbed and we moved her across the state. They moved to Louisiana and I'd drive there at least one weekend a month and spend the weekend fishing with them. I was 20 years old when I got the phone call that he'd hit something on a dark Louisiana road late at night, deer, cow, horse, nobody really knew. But the load of pipe he was hauling shifted forward and cut him in two. I don't think he tied that load down because he taught me how tie a load down and our loads didn't move. It must have shifted and he hadn't stopped to check it. I don't know. I was devastated and so was Nina and the girls. I forgot to mention that they adopted two sisters when they were babies and raised them right. One of them was still living at home and had just graduated high school. He and I both loved Mitchell reels and she gave me his entire collection and I still have them. She never went fishing again despite me doing anything that I could to get her to go. She never went fishing again. I'm 68 now and all of this happened over 40 years ago but it's still so fresh in my mind. I still use those reels and keep them cleaned and oiled so they work like new. One of his favorites of course was the Mitchell 300, which is my go to reel for everything but big catfish. They handle Channel Cats just fine though.You brought up some very sweet memories Hagen. I'm sorry for your loss and he's probably looking down and smiling, watching you use his bait tanks. People come into our lives that have such a positive influence on us and many times we don't even realize it until after they're gone. And don't think for a second that you haven't had that same positive influence on so many of us out here in the land of KZbin. You're one of the few fishermen that I still watch. I love to watch the interaction between you and your family while your fishing. You don't have to catch a damn thing and I'll still be here subscribing. Thanks for that!

Great video! Good to see your appreciation for a hand me down bait tank! In a world of everyone trying to sell something this was refreshing! Everyone thinks they can buy there way to success but as someone who has went down that road it simply isn’t the case. To be successful it takes hard work and time. You are a true example of what time on the water teaches a person.

Great video thanks for sharing, love to get my boat set up for some trolling. Slowly but surely I'm getting there with it. Love watching your videos learn alot from them,and the salt trick is a great thing, alot of people look at ya like your crazy when you mention putting salt in the water to make it colder. The video's I watch on saltwater fishing they always put the salt to their ice if they are planning on keeping fish to eat. Tight lines hope to see more videos 🎣🎣

Great video. I buy swimming pool salt from HD or Lowes in a 50 bag and store it in a lidded bucket. .. way cheaper. I also freeze water in old milk jugs to cool the water. As was said though, the chlorine didn’t seem to bother your bait. Interesting now that chlorine and salt are the same basic elements. (Sodium Chloride)

Also I have perfected the filtration of that tank ,,and it’s cheap ,,three quarters inch furniture batting cut a little larger than the filter basket with a hole in the middle ,,I wish I could send you some ,,I live beside a furniture factory and they give me scrap,,,I only use one piece of it and the more shad in tank the more you will have to clean that filter ,,three times in the first 20 minutes is not uncommon

@hagengrubbsfishing
@hagengrubbsfishing Жыл бұрын
They are both great but the super bait tank is a better design imo but also a lot more money. Honesty I will probably use my striper soup tank more often just due to the size. The striper soup tank is a good buy for the money imo and they have been improved since I bought mine. The only problem I’ve had with mine is scales getting around the filters and stopping up the Venturi but it’s not a big deal and they have since starting using a sock filter so that should prevent that issue. I also added a lid latch and a seal on the lid of the striper soup tank and that was a great improvement. Thank you for watching and good luck.

Hagen you need to talk to me ,,I’ve worn out three of those tanks in the last 20 years, I can go ahead and tell you what you need to know but I have an idea that you wouldn’t believe me until you actually tried some of the things that I can tell you ,,here are a few tips on that bait tank ,,, Never put any ice from anywhere in your bait tank Always just use the water from the lake , nothing else The water temperature directly affects the amount of salt needed, up to 56 degrees none, 60 to 74,,,20 ounces,, and above that 32 plus ounces All a Venturi does is make foam and that comes from too much oxygen, and noise, but they are useful in hotter climates than yours, I live in central North Carolina and they are useless here An at least 800 gallons per hour pump is a god send even down in the tank but even more useful to move water in an out On that tank you will find that according to the individual pump that’s in it that the correct water level is crucial,,six inches from the top , is about standard and that is both sides of bladder ,,if you are too less water the fish side won’t be high enough, if you get too much ,, the water will be deeper than ten inches in the filtration side after running ten minutes,,,also never use well water ,,that does not work for long term storage.
@hagengrubbsfishing
@hagengrubbsfishing Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the advice, that tank is pretty heavy for my boat so I actually made another stand pipe (shorter) for when I want to run less water in it. Still have one original length one to. Are you saying to use ice made from lake water? Thanks for watching to btw👍

@@hagengrubbsfishing ,,Hagen what happens when you use ice is the shad become accustomed to that temperature of water , then you hook em and throw them back in to 85 degree water ,,now just watch that shad a minute instead of dropping it down ,,ha ha ha you’ll see,,,and well water is the wrong PH

@@hagengrubbsfishing I have tried it too, after twenty years of guiding striper trips here on Norman m lookout , hickory and rhodhiss lakes , I’ve come to a definite conclusion,,the best method is to try to get water the day before and let it cool over night or go somewhere in that lake to cooler water and fill my tank.
