I put 12 freshly hatched chicks in the brooder, dipped beaks in the water and put food in a paper plate,. they totally ignored the food. till i tapped on the food in the plate,. then they all ran over and started pecking my finger then the food. and emptied that plate in about 20 mins lol , that was about the cutest thing i ever saw. Ended up loosing one chick that har a hard time hatching though.

I don't order chicks, I'll buy or hatch , I use a 12v light bulb because I do everything off grid, this includes hatching.

Order from a place that guarantees live delivery. Those places will care more about safe delivery. Also, it's pretty expensive to run a space heater at that temp for a week or 2. Like really expensive. Heat lamps work great and are safe if used correctly. Are also much cheaper than a space heater and heat plate.

I would never order chicks through the mail ,that is harsh and so cruel . Where I purchased my hens also sells chicks it’s only an 8 minute drive . you have given very valuable information ,so a big thank you for that ❤ I may get some chicks next summer I am in the Uk,as far as I know shipping chicks is only done my intensive rearing operation 😢
@thefeatherbrain
@thefeatherbrain 11 күн бұрын
I agree it's harsh and cruel, but I would estimate 95% of Americans are having their chicks shipped across the country to them OR they're buying from local feed stores (which have the chicks shipped to the store from hatcheries across the country). Everyone in this country believes shipping chicks is harmless. I've not seen anyone question it aside from vegan animal rights activists and even they aren't familiar with the research. I am trying to plant seeds of information in my videos, because I've found if I just say "this is a horrible practice, it needs to stop, and here's why," no one will listen. I'm instead trying to meet people where they're at and guide them without shaming or making them feel judged. Also, as far as I know, the UK intensive operations ship their chicks in climate-controlled trucks (not sure if it's all of them, but I think so.) So even the factory farms over there are being more humane than chicken lovers over here in this respect.

Oh those poor little chicks and what they go through. I always buy my chicks locally, within a half hour drive of home (and that stresses me enough!). I am thinking about fertile eggs next time, I have a buff orpington who should make a great mother (she is like the flock's peace keeper, loves everyone).

Hi from Australia, mine wernt live they were aggs i got them from ebay, i got 12 from 2 different places, all except 2 were firtile from one place they were all yolkers the rest, and the other 12, one was broken and one didnt do anything, but the other 10 from this lady look great they go into lockdown tomorrow, never done this before, i have everything ready, cant wait to see what we get as they are mixed heratage .I watch Random Okey farms with marie and fifi, marie showed with the baby chicks you can tap on the food like mother would, once they get that, then the same thing with the water, mummy chickens peck to show the babies, its a simple but very effective technich, take care stay safe.

I ordered 40 birds and all alive on delivery 20 meat 20 mixed egg layers. Ended up losing two meat birds to the lack of awareness of flip syndrome where after 2 weeks they might eat them selves to death if not switched to 12hr on 12hr off feedings. Also lost three egg birds over the first 3 weeks from I don’t know what but i did give cool water.

Could have been from shipping stress. The research shows that the death rate for shipped chicks is higher than for non-shipped chicks for AT LEAST 6 weeks following shipping. Of course, we can't know for sure if that was that cause, but it is a possibility...

@@thefeatherbrain first time raising Cornish cross so I’m almost 100% it was leaving the feed in there that did them in because both died over night with huge croups full of food. But have raised egg layers in the past still have 6 adults from the first batch 4 years ago and only had one death and it was in transit.

Thank you so much for your content. It helped me so much with imprinting and using all your tips. I’m curious if you’ve had issues with a chick sudden leg injury? Within 3 days our healthy chick suddenly started limping and progressively has gotten worse to no weight on the leg. I can’t seem to find online a solution besides monitor, separate, and keeping them fed/hydrated/warm. I’ve also isolated due to others spotting her weakness. Awful to watch and unsure what would be best next.

So sorry to hear you're going through this. How big is your brooder? They will likely need a little more heat at night if they're only a few days old - typically you want the HOTTEST part of your brooder to be 90-95 for the first week (lower 5 degrees every week thereafter), but that's only the HOTTEST part. They need to be able to get away from the heat if they need to, so a little bigger brooder can help with that. If you have access to cardboard boxes, you can put as many together as you need to make the space larger. Have you thought about using a fan to help them through the heat? I would put a little fan in one side of the brooder during the day. I would face it in a direction where they can get away from the draft if they need to in another part of the coop. So if the fan cools them too much, they can get away from the fan and heat up. You could even use a super tiny clip on fan if that's more convenient, or a freestanding little one, whatever works best in your set up. A lot of the little fans are battery powered (and rechargeable) too, which can make things easier. When the chicks are behaving as though they're hot, shoe them in front of the fan until they figure out that will cool them off on their own. Does that help? Best of luck in this most difficult situation. Bri

@suttonfamilycrazyfarm4281 You also could put a frozen water bottle or two in the brooder for the chicks to sit near when they're feeling hot. The combo of that and a little fan should make an enormous difference - again just make sure they have a spot where they can get out of the fan again to warm up.
